I said I don't enjoy writing out tab, I thought that covered it, but, OK, I'll make it more clear for you. -Yes! I dislike writing out numbers on tab paper. :peace:

However, this weekend's video will include a chord diagram. :D We'll be playing in open C tuning, so all the chords will be non standard, and new to most of you.

I can't open/download any of the videos, I've tried right-clicking and then selecting "save as" and I've tried just opening them by left clicking the link. Whatever I do it just says a connection with the server cannot be reached. Is there any other way I can get them?

no, it wasn't covered, and watch the snippiness please. I was merely asking if it was a paper thing.

seeing as how it seems it is... why don't you just use digital tab. seeing as it IS a video lesson presented in digital format. score something out in powertab and then use that image for the video.

no erasers, no smudge marks just flawless tab.

I think a lesson on Lead/rhythm hybrid playing (thats what i call it  ) would be fun.

for those who dont know what I'm talking about, listen to the Little Wing intro.

also a lesson on slide playing would also be nice.

but the Lead/rhythm one i think would be more fun.

slide guitar would be great,

maybe an "in my time of dying" lesson because its fairly easy, use's slide, use's a differant tuning (always intresting) and is great for impressing friends and is also a hit whilst busking.

keep up the good work by the way :D

Nice video! Droning notes sound awesome on songs on the acoustic. Can they be used as effectively on the electric as well?

I hadn't heard this song before, but I noticed it in this movie called Bruce Almighty... There was a joke about it : If You Can't Be With The One You Love, Then Love BRUCE! So the comparison was with this song...

Excellent work! Thanks, maybe I'll give open C tuning a shot. Except I'm sceptical about tuning the 2nd string (B) upto C. And I'm totally against tuning the 4th (D) to an E, that string always broke on my classical guitar, too scared to try it.

Your videos are great, and you are a good teacher aswell.... i really rate the thing that you do it for all the guitar players for free.... very good.
But....
Well, maybe my english is not good enough, but i cant get along to play some of the songs you done... are there any tabulatures out for them? like the version of hey joe you played, or if i had a hammer or even worse the new run rudolph run song....
I mean tabulatures of the songs in the way YOU play it and not just any tabulature....

If anyone could write and post them here, it would be great, thanks

excuse my bad english....

hey, i havent posted anything on this yet but i've been watching all your video lessons and they really are very useful, so first off just a quick thank you and cheers for the effort you put in...now thats out of the way...
i was wondering if you could have a lesson on classical guitar. i know thats a bit vague but maybe something by bach in the style of dominic miller (sting's guitarist) as i first started listening to more classical stuff because air on g string was tabbed by him in a guitar mag. of course classical gas would be great to play too. and maybe any ideas you have or any recommendations on what to play that i would recognise. i know that's a lot, sorry about the length but i can't really be specific because i don't know much about classical music.

Zappp came up with it, but "Steal this" has been used many times before -Google "Steal this" and you will see what I mean. "Steal this Book" "Steal this Movie" "Steal this Brand" etc etc.

Alright, so I know a lot of people are asking for basic shred. That will probably be a hard lesson since it involves a lot of theory and technique (but the soloing lessons at least touch on it a bit). But I was hoping for something a bit different. Acoustic shred. Pick, your always messing around on an acoustic and I can't really stand electric shred, but maybe acoustic would be a nice change. Anyway that's my two cents...

I have to say that this was pretty disappointing. Most of the stuff didn't even apply unless you have a Floyd Rose. You could have easily summed the whole 15 minute video up with one minute of discussion about wrapping the string around the tuning post.

This lesson was interesting. My guitar is stringed in a different way, but, still, I'm thinking about getting a new one and this will be helpful then! It satisfied some of my curiosity. Can't wait for the next lesson! :D

I really like your videos. They are just great. :D
In you Slide Video Lesson Kirk mentioned that there would be a second movie, showing some riffs in between. How can I get this second movie?
Thanks a lot and keep on doing these great videos.

I personally loved the restringing lesson. As someone fairly new to the guitar who has struggled with this task, I've finally managed to do it properly. Great method.

As someone said before, it would be awesome if you did some lessons on actual songs. I've seen other video sites try to teach songs, but something tells me your lessons would be better! Great job, keep up the terrific work.

I am thankful for Marc helping me out by making this lesson. I wish I could find more teachers to make videos for us. I'll be back in April, teaching guitar. I thought this was a good addition to the Steal This Video series. People continue to view the videos as they find the site and the STV series.
Teach songs? Geez I could do that forever! The next vid I'm planning to teach a whole song, its not an easy one.
The problem with teaching songs is...no matter what song is taught... some people wont like it.

however there is a legitiment reason that we arnt getting as much videos as we used to.

What we need is a series of "Playing in the style of" lessons.

Example

"Playing in the style of Hendrix" in it we will learn Hendrix esq licks, the theory behind his playing, a backing track, and a little on his use of the wah pedal.

We will NOT learn his songs or parts of his songs.

I realise I've jumped through most of this thread without reading and that is a big no-no on message boards, but this isn't one I usually check out, though I have checked out ever Steal This Video except for the first one which I couldn't access.

In any case I'm pretty old by what I assume the standards of this board are and have started learning to play guitar much later than most people here, but I work hard at trying to get good at the skill, however it comes with difficulty at times. Lately I've been working on Santeria by Sublime and with the work I've done with scales the solo isn't that bad, I still have a little trouble with it, but the intro and chorus are a little difficult with their arpeggiation (is that a word if not you know what my made up one means) and switching between chords while doing so, I was wondering if you could do a lesson on this topic. With maybe some exercises that would strengthen a player in the ability to play said appreggiations easily in more chords.

Another area that I would be intersted in is one as far as singing and playing at the same time goes. I realise that this may be beyond the scope of a video lesson but I'm interested in doing an open mic or two and I have no idea of any tips or tricks to make my way through it. Unfortunately my approach is going to be to attack a simple song with a simple strum pattern (Take the Skinheads Bowling by Camper Van Bhethoven) and mutilate it on stage in a way that is hopefully pleasing to the ears of my audience. I was wondering if you could give any advice or pointers.

TheAbacus
04-30-2006, 12:46 PM
^^^^^^ Maybe I can help. ^^^^^^^

I had once tried to write an article about strumming. Its not finished yet... but I'm working on it. You can check it out:
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=284748

Is it me or Take The Skinheads Bowling doesn't make ANY sense? The singer even claims that "there's not a line that goes here that rhymes with anything". Easy strumming though. If you need help with the strumming for this song, you can post in the above thread I created.

Speaking of which, I had a dream last night, where I was licking someone's knees....? HAH! :))

Heya Pick. I'd first just like to say, U r the man! Amazing video lessons, i've learned so much from u. I'm a lead guitarist in my own school-band and ure lessons hav helped me loads.
I was just wondering, you know on your 'soloing: part 1' video, wat was the song u were soloing to and is that an actual solo from a song or did u make it up cause i'd love to learn how to play it 'if' there is a tab or the music around. (been stuck in my head since i heard u play it.)
And, how the heck do u manage to stretch ure pinky to hit 2 frets up for the boogie woogie without covering the 4th string and removing ure middle finger? Any tricks to increasing the flexibility of your pinky?
Thx a lot mate.

P.s. I'm not sure wat u could do for a lesson but a few lil things popped in my head. There is:
- foot pedals (not sure wat would happen besides explaining diff kinds and what kind u want. Though there is that hendrix thing where he pushes up and down on one, e.g. in voodoo child.)
- shredding, maybe like one of those old paul gilbert lessons. (i dunno how u pick that fast, i've been practising non-stop for ages and i dont seem to get it.)
- something on music timing. Because i've realised that virtually all like, for e.g. punk - is in 4,4 timing.

thats it, rock on dude!

I'm a recent member of the UG group and cant believe that ingrates would flame you for such an excellent contribution. However having been too heavily involved in my last community (ntfm online gaming) I know what its like when "a bit of fun" starts to feel like another chore. I'm also aware that we occasionally need time for "real life" and that people do moan for no reason and that it can be really demorolising.

'tis a shame, I hope you feel the urge to make some more and even if you dont I hope you take some satisfaction from knowing how much I appreciate the 19 videos you have done.

Thank you

The videos started to become more like work and less like fun. There is no reward for me in getting flammed, or watching Kris get flammed, so I've been doing other things.

I had the feeling that the videos were begining to be more of a chore than fun, in which case its good that your breaking away from the videos and focusing on more important matters.

Yeah it's good your getting away from them if they are becoming work. I can't believe all the assholes that are in this thread.. I mean come on... what did he ever do? If he makes a mistake who gives a ****. I mean come on they are free videos. He didn't have to do anything for us but he did.

That's okay, sit back, enjoy summer with your family, and push anything, which
just seems to be a duty away, just like me ! :D

Yeah, it sucks when Kris and Pick get flammed for making awesome free vids...
I hate it when people flame them, Kris and Pick make this site very useful.
Is it just me or does Kris look more and more discouraged every vid...I hope Kris doesn't get pissed and leave.

Yeah, it sucks when Kris and Pick get flammed for making awesome free vids....

yea whats the key word in that sentence.....FREE!!!!!
they are just little pricks who need to stfu and apperciate it, becuase they are not paying for it, and they are kick ass videos, ill bet that those whinning bitches could have play half as good as pick or kris, and they complain about getting FREE lessons from them, not only that pick got mark seal to give a lesson for FREE, you have to pay for his lessons usally, so they need to stuf, bc ill bet they cant play better than mark as well
couldnt agree with you more dime

Pick, I can't seem to make good arpeggiated riffs down. You know the kind where you are just playing the notes of some chord seperately in different orders to create a melody? I just can't find a good way to make them sound good :(. So a I'd be very happy with a lesson on that(or just some advice), cuz most of you vids that deal with riffs are more twords strumming.
Thanks

[B]Thank you for the effort you put into these videos and they are very much appreciated...
more power on the upcoming videos and hopefully you wont get frustrated over some nasty comments by ignorant and belligerent individuals who, obviously, are products of broken homes and are living pathetic lives.

consider those efforts as service to mankind.

Pick, everyone that puts out stuff like videos and music, no matter who you are, whether you're Jimi Hendrix or one of those random people on YouTube, there will always be people that say you suck and flame you and stuff no matter how good you are. Don't let that ruin what was supposed to be a fun thing that you like to do, the number of UGers that watch and appreciate your videos definitely outnumber the people that flame you and kris (and the people that do flame the both of you are real assholes), so anyway, I think i speak on the behalf of all of us when I say thanks man. YOU ROCK!!! AND DO NOT EVER STOP ROCKIN'!!!

I posted this at Ultimate Guitar and am repeating this here.

"Like always, this was awesome (Capo, etc vid). Just downloaded this and the alternate tunings video. Man, you make your guitar sing. I noticed you had a 12 string on the stand in the background. Any chance of a video about playing a 12 string, de-tuning it and using a capo????"

Your lessons are awesome and free to boot. Keep up the effort as it is very much appreciated by many.

Cheers

Thanks guys! I'll think about incorporating the 12 string, it's also about time to fire up the SG again!

Thanx for the Vids PickNGrin i just started DLing them and watching them yesterday. They are great little mini lessons and im enjoying learning some new things as well the little songs that illustrate ur ideas.

Main thing i would like to thank u for is reconecting me to Chordbook.com i had been using that ages ago and always found it to be way better than all other chord sites because of the exact reason u stated, instead of just finding out what an chord looks like u can put in ur own series of notes and it will try and classify it for you. Any ways i lost the link and i could never remeber what the site was called and my countless google serches were always fruitless. So Thnx very much for ur vids and getting me back into conection with that great site.

Also here is another site (http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/) that i managed to find which almost does the same thing however it doesnt have the cool alt tunning features like chord book etc. What it does have is a mini jam machine where u put in the chords and some scale and chord progression generators.

So yeah Check it out

Thanx again

i've had a hard time trying to learn to strum at a fast pace and make it sound right. it just sounds like i'm beating my guitar to death.

hey pick, hate to bug you, as i'm sure you're a busy guy..
but one of your videos is doing my head in lol (love the vids by the way)
in your chord embellishment video, Margaritaville i can't figure out what you did on the outro..

you went D Dsus2, D, then G __ A. i can't figure out what you did between G and A. (tried using chordbook, but can't see where your fingers are to well, and everything i thought it was, i got no chord name for)

please help me quit butchering this classic :D
(tried messaging you, but apparently your inbox is full)

hey pick, i was wondering if we can request lessons sorta, because I'm trying to work on my guitar technique and it would help a load if you could explain the basics of rockabilly/psychobilly guitar playing, also where are you from in Ohio, i spent most of my life in Akron.
