ANY solid-body guitar works for punk, and almost any amp works for it as well. But if you want to go with the flow, get a LP/Marshall combination.

Sorry, couldn't resist the temptation. Epiphone Les Paul Special II, they are quite a good all round guitar, and very cheap.

very very very cheap here!

there is no such thing as the best guitar for punk, or any genre. I recommend that you get one with humbucking pickups though, as they are louder and that makes it easier to get good distortion from them.

but yeah, there's no one guitar that is the holy grail of punk guitars.

i'd go for ibanez or epiphone through a marshall or trace elliot amp, they sound sweet.

Be like all the other punk-rockers today and get the ultimate weapon: A SQUIER AFFINITY STRAT! Because, hey, it's backed by fender! And fender is good, right! That guy from that one band on MTV plays a fender bass... so the squier must be good by association!

My god. Get an RG.

If you want it for REAL punk, any guitar is good(even the squier bullet), for pop punk well, just look at what they(the pop... 'punkers' are playing, which I think are LPs. Just get a loud amp though, just to let the neighbors you mean business >:)

Either a Gibson LP or SG or a Fat Strat. A Telecaster would work well too, with a humbucker in the bridge. That seems to be a popular selection among punkers nowadays.

well, i say anything can suit punk because punk isnt exactly hard to replicate. after i got bored of punk i decided that my squire strat wasnt too good for me anymoer, i scalloped it and its fine to learn shred on. i quite like the neck on these but the pickups are crap.anywho i have an ibanez now cos a strat just aint metal.
any amp will work cos in punk you have crap tones anyway.

Do these people not have the brains to figure out what guitars these bands are playing? I mean, just see what axes they're playing in the pictures that are in Hit Parader or whatever or watch their videos on TRL & figure it out that way......I think this is the 5th "what kind of guitar should I play punk rock with" post!! Well, if you have to ask, you'll never have a clue.......

GOOOOOOSSSSSHHHHH!!!!! Freakin' IDIOTS!!!!!

for real punk ie clash, newyork dolls, etc... any guitar works really... humbuckers are not a must... but an amp with decent distortion is.

for pop punk (note real pop punk is stuff like the queers, where as fake pop punk is stuff like blink and greenday)... then the name brand stuff is what they usually go for as well as humbuckers.

Tele or strat

time to mimic every other response in this thread... punk can be played on anything BUT ill give you hints based on tone.

thick, chunky tone-les paul
more piercing, brighter, treblier overdrive- stratocaster or telecaster
less chunk than a les paul and a little more brightness but with humbuckers- ibanez rg or a fat strat
deeper sound... kinda hard to explain- semi hollow

hope that helps a little... these arent the only guitars that fit these tone criteria's but it should give you a place to start.

whats everyones problem with punk music ?

i can't speak for everyone but for me it's the fact that it's so simple. I'm not going to lie, there are some punk/pop-punk/emo tunes out there that are ridiculously catchy (for me it was MCR's Teenagers) but considering the fact that i don't really listen to the lyrics (unless they're really good i.e. John Meyer or just fun i.e. Freezepop) that kind of music bores me. I will say, contrary to many, i dig the more recent poppish punk than the original stuff because that crap just sounded like illiterate noise to me.

For me to like music it has to have something in there that i wish i could do. I listen to a lot of Fusion and damn near every genre of metal because it's not uncommon for me to hear something be it a solo , a lick, or a riff that just makes me want to practice more lol.

Green Day was part of the same music scene as the Queers. Blink 182's early music was heavily influenced by The Queers, Screeching Weasel, etc. So why are they not "real" pop-punk?

Anyway, most any guitar with humbuckers should work for TS's music taste.

It would be better to just offer a list of the quintessential punk guitars. There isn't a particular guitar that beats all others, but some notebale guitars are:

Les Paul Junior
Les Paul Special
SG
Telecaster
Mosrite
Univox Hi-Flyer

emmm, that bands aren't punk by the law, they are pop punk, and almost every pop punk guitarist has a Gibson Les Paul and Fender Strats, but there's no a perfect guitar for each subgenre, just play the one you got, or the one you want to get.
