Haha, ironically enough, that's all the solo is, without it's NOTHING!

To go back to Ummagumma, it's not one of my favorite albums, but Grantchester Meadows and the Narrow Way part 3 make the studio disc worth having. The live disc, well, what can I say... it's Pink Floyd live and it's damn good.

Those Pink Floyd 8MM films are really about it, I doubt you'll find a full song or show from that era on video anywhere.

I have a hard time believing that they only recorded those short clips. If Roger has pro shot footage of The Wall he isnt releasing, then he probly has footage of the Dark Side tour also.

Well the thing is, those short clips are bootlegs, not official video (at least, it sure doesn't look like official video).
I have a sort of off topic question for the bootleggers here. How many of us have heard the first night show for Dark Side? Is it just me, or does it actually sound cooler in some aspects? It really has a darker feel to it in some places, like the way the lyrics to Time kind of sneak in and how they're sung lower and slower than on the album. I also really like the Mortality Sequence and the Travel Sequence, very interesting to hear.
Now don't get me wrong, I love Dark Side as is, and just because I like the Mortality Sequence/Travel Sequence doesn't mean I don't like Great Gig or On the Run.

There is without a doubt in my mind pro-shot Dark Side footage out there. You see little clips in the Making of Dark Side DVD, I believe they are from '72 (because of the Travel Section), but they are out there.
Now, I know for a fact that good quality original pro-shot Wall tapes exist. Why Waters hasn't said anything recently about releasing them, I don't know. There are, however, two bootlegged shows, one at Nassau in Feb. of 1980 and another from Earls Court in August 1980, the latter being the better of the two (so I've heard...I've only seen the Earls Court footage, which is pretty decent if you ask me).
http://youtube.com/watch?v=tpQMKDOvMPw
if you mean these they probly are pro shot, but bootlegged (like the wall shows most of us have seen) and there must exist a good quality version somewhere. I've seen that video before, and after a closer look, that doesn't seem to be Any Colour You Like at all. It looks like it's a bootleg audio synched with random video clips, most likely from Echoes or Careful With That Axe, Eugene from around that time period. The shots of Mason show that he isn't even playing, Waters comes to the mic many times in the clips and seems to whisper some things (which leads me to believe the clips are from CWTA,E), but we all know that it's Gilmour who does the scat (which I might as well add when we see Gilmour, he isn't anywhere near a mic), and the shots of Gilmour in the smoke with the blue lighting doesn't show any drums being played (so they could be from that long Echoes interlude with Gilmour's wah-seagull sounds).

Someone tell me about "The Embryo." Like its origin and stuff like that.
And what would you guys say are the differences between Roger and Dave's voices?
stonegolem13
04-06-2007, 01:11 PM
^Ahh...The Embryo. It's Roger's song, a demo of which was released by Harvested on their "Picnic - A Breath of Fresh Air" CD. This same demo is also available on "Works" or "ATFOS". Personally I think the demo is useless and gives a completely different song to that when played live. The live version is definately better :D
Roger has a more low pitched voice than Dave. I think Dave is more flexible with vocals ranging from that on Not Now John to that on Echoes. Roger's voice has a sort of raspishness to it which is very good on some songs but on others it is dreadful (a good example of Roger's voice can be when CN was played during 1987-1994 with about 3 people singing compared to the studio version, with Roger [it doesn't take a genious to work out which is better]) I also like Roger's tone with STCFTHOTS and CWTAE. Gilmour's voice is better though :p:

He can deliver some harsh vocals, such as in Sheep and Pigs 3DO, and tone it down on stuff like Set the Controls. Gilmour can do the same, though he's got more of a "softer" voice, if you will. I like them both, though.

Now to stay on topic I like both as well, Rogers voice on stuff like "Set The Controls" or "Careful With That Axe" is just amazing.
However on stuff like WWWH and many songs from TDB Gilmour shines. I would say Gilmour has a bit of a nicer voice, but each singer has his own qualities and those qualities go well with different songs. SO you need both.

I don't see what the whole big deal is about Dark Side of the Moon. Sure, it's a fantastic album, but I think Pink Floyd has better. I much prefer Animals and Wish You Were Here.
Dark Side of the Moon isn't my favorite album of theirs, but I believe that it is easily within their top three best as far as the creativity and overall musicianship of the album.

Without Dark Side they would still be very underground, I think. W/O it I think (DON'T FLAME) we wouldn't have had The Wall.

Dark Side definately propelled them into the spotlight, but you never know what might have happened if they didn't create it. They could have faded out (though they weren't exactly "very underground" to begin with), or they could have produced music just as good or possibly better then their later albums (which we now know would be pretty damn hard to do when looking back on WYWH and Animals :p: ).

Without Dark Side, I think they would have phased out. That album stayed in the Top 100 Best Sellers of the week for 10 years... No other album has ever done that. Not even Boston, which is I think the best selling debut album of all time? Dark Side made those guys absolutely rich, and really got their name much bigger than it otherwise would have gotten, I think.

They wouldn't have made it in the US and Canada if not for Dark Side. The UK was pretty receptive of them, however had they not finished the album until '74 or even '76, I think DSOTM would have been ignored. It arrived on the cusp of the prog era and shot up the charts before the likes of KISS, Aerosmith, and even perhaps Elton John got their chance at fame. And we all know those three are far from progressive music.

I disagee man, Dark Side is great, one of the best albums ever, but Floyd have better. That was their only commercial success beside The Wall.
It may have happened, but their other albums are too good, maybe Dark Side makes some of their lesser known albums seem not as good? I think that first sentance of yours is crazy, its not like they were unknown at the time of DSotM.

I'm not saying that Dark Side is their best album. I'll be the first person to say that it isn't anywhere near their best... What I'm saying is that it's the album that got them from being an 'underground', or one of the more lesser known bands, to being one of most popular bands in history. They weren't unknown at the time of DSotM, but they weren't extremely popular either. Dark Side really took their career to the next level.

I think that first sentance of yours is crazy, its not like they were unknown at the time of DSotM. right. I mean, they were obviously popular in the UK, and they were getting there in the US.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - (1967) - #6 UK; #131 US
A Saucerful of Secrets - (1968) - #9 UK; didn't chart in the US
Music from the Film More - (1969) - #9 UK; #153 US
Ummagumma - (1969) - (Double album) - #5 UK; #74 US Platinum
Atom Heart Mother - (1970) - #1 UK; #55 US Gold
Meddle - (1971) - #3 UK; #70 US 2x Platinum
Obscured by Clouds - (1972) - #6 UK; #46 US Gold
That was their only commercial success beside The Wall. well, their albums after Dark Side were all plenty successful, just not like The Wall or Dark Side were.

Well, 'Time' and 'Money' are both songs you could listen to.
Or how about this, instead of coming to an online forum and asking things, why not do something really crazy and just go out and buy Dark Side Of The Moon. I mean, I know that actually buying an album by a band you've heard great things about is a bit of a wacky idea, but hey, you never know.
Seriously, what the fuck? What did people do before they had the internet to ask about what songs to listen to to base their entire decision as to whether to buy a bands' album or not? Jeez, this is one of the reasons why music is so stale and people are so close minded, beacuse they'll only buy things they've heard before instead of just buying a random album by a band they've never heard of. Take a chance already, you might like it. Fucking hell.
And anyway, Pink Floyd are more of an album band, there's not a single song from any album that sounds like any others - with the exception of 'The Nile Song' and 'Ibiza Bar' which are from the More album - so it'd be in your best interest to just buy Dark Side Of The Moon. So go do it. Right fucking now.

I think that the same albums could have been made...PFs music reflects the music at the time due to their progressiveness :)
Metaledit: Is anyone else in love with the Ummagumma version of 'A Saucerful of Secrets' ? The yelling at the end just adds so much to it.
It's a live version, and it is soooooo much better than the studio version
Same. Some of that album is so... heavy.
and very deep
EDIT: What's with the end of TDB? "Is that Charlie?"
It's a phone call from some guy to Gilmour...Charlie answers and then hangs up
"At the very end of "The Division Bell" album, there's a phone conversation between Steve O'Rourke (Floyd's manager) and Charlie (Polly Samson's son). This conversation was probably incidentally recorded by the answering machine at Gilmour's house." - From ATFOS
All this talk of Roger and David's voices, and yet no love for Rick and Nick?

But you clearly don't get MY piont. So, I'll say this one last time. Man, I really don't like to make fun of people who are drasticly erogant. But you're tempting me. I wish to congregate about Pink Floyd as if we were having a beer. But you clearly don't get MY piont. So, I'll say this one last time. I would like to know if theres a specific famous song by them, For instance, if I asked about Led Zeppelin you would say 'Stairway To Heaven' or 'Black Dog'. Now it looks like you've done that, but not by the point I was trying to get across. And whether you can understand a post or not is not my problem Listen. There is no need to get pissed. You asked for songs that you could listen to to gain your respect for the band, considering you hadn't heard much by them.
Hey, I've heard so many good things about Pink Floyd and 'The Dark Side Of the Moon'. But I haven't had a chance to listen to them. And it usually helps to start with a really good song to help build respect for the others. So could you guys tell some good songs?
My point is that in order to understand what this band is really about, you should listen to their albums in their entirety. They released very few singles and are not known for single stand-alone tracks, save a small handful like Money, or Another Brick in the Wall. So to answer your question, listen to Money or Another Brick in the Wall if you want to listen to their radio-friendly, popular songs. If you want to find out how great this band can really be, buy a full album and listen to it as a whole.

I think that AMLoR comes closer to the "real" PF sound but TFC is a better album....according to David Gilmour:
On the Momentary Lapse of Reason album, Nick's belief in himself was pretty well gone, and Rick's belief in himself was totally gone. And they weren't up to making a record, to be quite honest about it [...] Roger's very good at belittling people, and I think over the years he managed to convince Rick completely that he was useless and more or less convinced Nick of the same thing.
According to Roger:
I must say, that under the circumstances, it's a superb title for a so-called Pink Floyd record.

I posted that...and i think TFC was lacking in guitar from the Floyd sound. Basically it involves music which is like DSOTM but which varies to accomodate heavier rock (eg Animals +some parts of The Wall) and more psychedellic rock (eg PATGOD). I think TFC is more different from other PF material than AMLOR...that was my point

Edit: And I've been sent a cd with a damaged case once. I like to be able to see what I'm buying.

Eh, well I've just gone on a mass CD ordering spree recently, three to come next tuesday, and so far all's been good.
I guess it's all just pretty hit and miss, but I usually prefer to buy an album I know I want by an artist I know of online, and just buy random CDs that look like I might like them in stores.

I can't find More for the life of me. I'll have to order it, if that's possible (*crosses fingers*).
Stupid rare albums :p:
If I ever bother to get my posters scanned, I'll post them on here.
I got it on vinyl :p:
Check eBay or something maybe?

I found More at an indie store close to my house... just look around. They had the Japanese version, too.

fantastico! I love the simplicity/crapiness of Momentary Lapse and Ummagumma :haha
:haha I decided I could either do it superbly and spend about 5 minutes on the thing or just scribble it....I find that abstract works well with Floyd covers...especially WYWH (not DSOTM though because that's already abstract :p: )
There's one advantage of being a PF fan....if you're asked to draw the splitting of light by a prism (or a flying pig) in your exam...there ain't a problem :D
My favorites from More are The Nile Song (Floyd doing some very early metal... kick ass!), Green Is The Colour and Cymbaline. Most of the instrumentals on that album are kind of disappointing in my opinion.
Yeah, Cymbaline, The Nile Song and Green is the Colour are definately my second favourites :p: The Nile Song is very similar to Ibiza Bar, but Ibiza bar sounds less metal and more Floyd :)

Never say that about a Floyd album again  :p:
It should be on amazon

I'm not one to get things from Amazon or eBay, seeing as how I do not have a credit card and my parents probably wouldn't let me use theirs :( I also just don't trust online stores like that. Childish, I guess.
I can't find More, Obscured by Clouds, Live at Pompeii and Delicate Sound of Thunder. Pah.
Anyways, back on topic. What do you guys think of Ummagumma? The studio disc is alright (Narrow Way FTW) but the live disc is superb!

Ummagumma, that has the best live album i've heard in a long time. Careful With that Axe, is awsome.

I don't have Ummagumma.
And to Metalfan, keep looking, they're out there.

Childish, I guess. sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get what you want. I've resorted to ebay for one CD I've ever bought that I couldn't find anywhere else, and managed to get it at half the price, including shipping.

Yeah. But you risk the chance of getting a scratched or non-original CD.

I've always gotten store quality cds from EBay, surprisingly.

I have a bit of a question. Have any of you bought and listened to David Gilmour's latest solo album "On an Island"?? Ive heard parts of each song and it sounds nice.

Yeah. It's great. You should buy it and listen to the whole thing in one sitting with headphones.

I've heard the song On an Island from that album and thought it was great, but I have yet to hear the album in its entirety.

On An Island is a great album. Very chilled, relaxed atmosphere. The lyrics are very strong. It's very easily to just lay back and visualize the ocean with it. Dave's guitar tones add to this, they're very underwatery and there's quite a bit of absolutely fantastic guitarwork (but that's expected with Gilmour I suppose). Definitely worth picking up.

I'd say Time is my favourite Floyd song though the duh - duh duuuuuh bit at the start goes on way to long, but the lyrics and solo are just magic. I love pretty much all of DSOTM but I've recently become addicted to Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive from PATGOD

My favourite track is probably Lucy Leave, the early song. All of Barretts stuff, blows me away! But i think i love all the floyd tracks with Syd as much as the one before.
