Hey peoples, I am thinking of getting a either an LTD Viper or an Epiphone SG400 has anyone played both and can give any opinions? They are both the cheaper versions of their big brothers (ESP / Gibson) and they look similar but is that as far as it goes in terms of parts/sound quality etc?

Thanx

I like Epi/ Gibson more than LTD/ESP. Sooooo i would take the G-400.

Quality wise, they are ok guitars, could do with a pickup upgrade in time. I played both and fine the SG to be much more comfortable with a much better tone. I don't know what wood it's made out of, but the ESP is sooo heavy for the type of guitar it is and the tone isn't as good as I expected. Get the SG.

ok gibson and esp are like night and day. one is meant for anything and the other is purely meant for heavy stuff. its all preference but they are by no means guitars meant for the same purpose.

Well, which ESP LTD Viper are you looking at? They've got like the LTD 50, 100FM, 200FM, 400 and 407. If you have the money, the cheapest out of those that is pretty good quality would be the 200FM.

Also, what style of music do you generally play? For harder rock, metal type stuff, go for an ESP LTD. And for Classic Rock and such, the Epiphone might do you better.

Although, if you have enough money, you should probably look into a cheaper Gibson SG, cuz Epi's generally suck. Or maybe an Epi Elitist model.

Why, oh why, does it seem like only a few people in the world realize NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD A GIBSON. I mean seriously, people need to chill w/ the OmG GeT ThE GiBbY!!!!11!!1!!. Epiphones are perfectly acceptable guitars.

The new Vintage range og guitars is good. They all have Wilkinson pickups and hardware and they sound good

I love my Viper 400 to death...but this all depends on what kind of music you want to play. That whole "The viper is only good for metal!!" stuff is kinda bull****, in my opinion. With a fairly decent amp, you can get a lot o' versatility out of those EMGs. Sure their cleans aren't as bluesy as some Fender Noiseless single coils, but whatever. They're good enough.

If it's an LTD Viper 400, get that. If not, then wait and save up for something better, becuase I do not like any LTD made of agathis much. And the G400 isn't worth it imo.

^Listen to him. He's right. Don't get the LTD if all you can afford is one made with agathis, but the Epi G400 just plain sucks. So don't buy that.

ya the G400 isnt too good but the G400 custom is badass. id get that over the viper. its got so much more versitility over the viper

id get the ltd if i were you. the g400 is so bad. most epis arent too far off from a gibson (price to performance ratiio)
but the g-400 feels like a toy. not even close to an sg. belive me, i have a gibson sg standard myself, and many friends have had a g-400. theyre just plain crappy.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the G-310? I've never had any bad experiences with the G-400. I say get the Epi, but that may just be because I loathe ESP/LTD.

If you're going to get an SG, you should save up for (at least) an Epi Elitist 61 Standard. I'm not a big fan of ESP's (EMG's sound horrible), nor am I a big fan of the G-400. However, the Elitist 61 Standard is a good guitar, and if you're going to save up for that, you should just go the extra $50 and get the Gibson SG Special.

I'm looking for a new solid-body electric, mid-range price, mostly for stuff like classic rock. Any crowd favorites?

there is also the number of frets, to my current knowledge, vipers have 24 and SG's only have 22

Vipers > Epi SGs. The EMGs sound hella better; the stock Epi pickups suck. The only good Epi SG I've ever played is one that belonged to my friend, and looked/sounded exactly like an SG Standard, except for the Epi headstock.

I suggest the viper. It's a very solid guitar. I've been lucky to play it a few times, and I plan on buying one. It's a better choice than an Epi G whatever by far.

this is a cool thread, cause recently I had to make the same decision. I ended up buying the g400. To all the anti-g400 guys, seriously of course its not as good as a gibson, its also ALOT CHEAPER. For gods sake, if I wanted to (and could) spend upwards of a grand on a guitar ya Id get the gibson, but Im not loaded and by the sounds of it neither is the author of the thread, so there really isnt a reason to bring up the gibson. The esp ltd viper 400 is kick ass, but almost 200 dollars more than the g400. I played 4 g400s and picked the best sounding one, it playes awesome. One thing about the epis is that it has a thinner neck than the gibson, which I like the thinner necks. The real question you need to ask yourself is if the esp ltd is 200 dollars better? I didnt think so.

Hey there, thanks for all your replies!

I played a few Epi's and the LTD Viper 100 yesterday, with all advice in mind. I think the Viper felt a bit 'clunky' for me and they only had the one model, the G400 and Gothic G400s that I tried sounded pretty sweet for what I play (which is hypnotic rock and also power pop - listen at www.glister.com.au) with quite a range between pickups and noticeable tone changes when twisting tone knobs (always a good sign!)

I was using an OLP (cheap Musicman looks like a wolfgang) which is a little thin for my likings, but I was given it for nix. And no, I cannot spend the money for a real Gibson SG unfortunately, unless I sell about 10,000 more CDs...

The guy in the shop told me that Tommy Iommi actually plays his Epi SG signature - is that true?? They can't be that bad then!

Also, NirvanaRocks00, we have done 2 covers in our time, one of them is Lithium (we power-popped it to kill off Kurt's depression - we must have been in a good mod that day ;) let me know what you think:
http://obzine.hypermart.net/glister/audio/Lithium.mp3

I am looking to spend around $600 (aussie dollars) so I should be able to pick up that G400, but I might try out a custom (has 3 pickups...) first :). Thanks so much for everybody's comments - really appreciate them!!!!

Will keep an eye here in case there's any other insight... also noticed the LTD is from indonesia, where is the G400 made?

About the g400 production, they used to be made in Korea, but are now made in China. The good part about this is that the newer g400s have grover tuners, (check the actual tuners for the name grover), which is a MAJOR plus. Mine have yet detune. Oh and btw Im just speaking of the g400, not vintage, custom, or Iommi versions, I dont know about their production in spesific except that the vintage is still made in Korea and has a 1 peice neck. Hope some of that helps.
