what is a good techneque to mute the open notes and still keep speed

how fast do you want to go exactly? I'd say go with a palm mute myself

yea man, just palm mute that some bitch. If you don't know how, just use the fleshy part of your pick hand palm and place it on the strings near the bridge to mute it.

Well, considering that you want to be comfortable with playing, you can't mute the open string with your fretting hand (unless you can comfortably stretch 9 frets, which i cant:p). You'll have to mute it, and you might want to consider alternate picking, as it will be faster than the "all downstrokes". Its a wee bit dicier that way, but if you want to keep the other notes unmuted, then you're gnna ahve to angle your palm so that it only hits the one string. Good luck.

If you've got big hands try bringing your thumb around. it's a stretch but it works for me sometimes.

If you can mute at the nut while fretting at the 9th fret your hands are waaaaay too big. I dont think there are many people that can do that, and I would hazard that most of the ones who can are bassists.

Yea, those are circus hands. you could probably play the high E with your thumb
