I"m glad you mentioned that since that song rarely ever gets any attention... I definitely agree, at least as far as clean parts and the solo goes,.. that guitar just weeps and tears your heart out!

Should be crushing! :headbang:I've not heard a thing about that, I asked HMV about a week ago if they're gettin it in, and it wasn't even on the list :(
Although they than asked me if i had meant 'Machine Men - Elegies'...
I'll ask again. If they stock it, im buyin that mofo day of release.
As far as Dime's best moment...
The end of Floods, it's the moment that made Dime my Idol, and I still stand by that..
Although 10's and Cemetery Gates are also vintage Dime moments...

Forgot about that one, great song.
^^It's forbidden because of the enormous amount of n00bs running around posting CoB threads. CoB threads were spreading like disease before that rule was implemented.

Yes, I understand that. But why does that forbid us to discuss them ANYWHERE, e.g. HERE.
We're restricted to discussing them in the thrash thread, yet people seem afraid of even that, and I honestly don't see what that has to do with multiple CoB threads.

The HMV website has a good deal (ww.hmv.co.uk) £12.99 and free UK delivery
Ordered it last night (as well as new Exodus :headbang: ) \m/
Bring on next week!
Yeah the outro to Floods is extremely beautiful
The Sleep kicks ass, especially the solo: sends chills down my spine everytime I hear that
My favourite: Cemetery Gates (was simply blown away beyond belief when I heard it for the first time), Hollow (\m/) and probably Cowboys From Hell because that was the first Pantera song I ever heard :headbang:

I completely forgot about them. I like Product of Society and Beyond Recognition. Good Bay Area thrash band and I hear that they got back together and are gonna release a new album soon, so can't wait to see.
There is a HUGE movement of thrash bands coming back : Nuclear Assault, Holy Moses, Defiance, Dark Angel, Assassin, Piledriver, etc. I love it although the new albums aren't really as good as before.
And for Dark Angel's new album, I can't find much info anywhere, so I'm clueless as to when it comes out.
As for Cob. Let people discuss about them here and all we have to do is ignore all posts by not replying and changing subject, or it'll degenerate like last thrash thread where there were more posts about people saying that CoB weren't thrash than actual thrash posts.

Has anyone ever heard of Hexen? My friend showed me them, suprisingly from myspace. This made me very wary of them, but it's actually quite good. Killer lead guitarist. http://www.hexenmusic.com/ The stuff I heard from the first demo is pretty poor, but the new EP looks promising. The only songs they have at that website now is a video of a "Hangar 18" cover, but they have lots on here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=4500906&Mytoken=F1388894-C538-4D3B-8351A4ED2EEC0207322542859

Pretty damn good, I added them on the first page. It's hard though nowadays to have a band with the old style vocals, they all go for the old school death/thrash vocals.

The new Exodus isn't that amazing to be honest. I've only gave it one listen up to now, and really think that the vocals suck. And where's the speed? I hate how all (or almost) lost their speed. I'm pretty sure it's not difficult to make a good album using powerchords and going 100 nps.

Well, man, I'm a CoB fan too, and it was me that brought up the malmsteen connection, so try not to get too hurt about my observation. Besides, since when has plagiarism been called classical music? I'm not saying this particular case is definitely plagiarism, as it could be feasible that they both came up with the licks through listening to the same source, but this one song I was looking at, he plays exactly the same notes over the course of something like 4 or 5 bars, proceeding to play the same arpeggios, but in a slightly different sequence, to what malmsteen does over the next few bars.
Either way, it's not such a big deal, I raised the issue as a point of interest. Sickmetal, I'll try and get the particular songs I'm referring to and post them up here as soon as I can.

Why is everyone so damn obsessed with CoB?? My girlfriend loves them to death, I can't stand them. Pure wankery, and not very good wankery at that.
how are the "pure wankery" as you put it? maybe one of the reasons people like them so much is because they are actually good at what they do and that they have some talent compared to other bands. but that is just my humble opinion, though.

I respect the fact that slayer haven't changed their format in over 20 years, but if a band decides to take new directions in their music for whatever reason, I think it's really unfair to say that, that decision is made on the sole basis of following a trend, or money or something dishonourable like that.
If a group doesn't wish to repeat itself, it doesn't have to.
If metallica decided to leave out guitar solo's and drop tune in st anger for the sake of trying something new, they can't be criticized.
Unfortunately not many people in the metal world are open minded, and that's why they label a band a "sellout" the moment they try something different.

^I know nothing about Carnivore so I did a search on them and found that they are from Brooklyn and after their second album disbanded and later formed a different band. I read that they have hardcore elements in their music. If so, what about them is hardcore?
On another note, I own Testament - Practice What You Preach, and have always sensed a flaw with the album but I couldn't really put my finger on it. I love most of the solo's, and the vocals and riffs are good but I eventually noticed that it wasn't very upbeat as an album. So my question is: what would be their best album for level of thrashness?
Yeah, how heavy are they on the crossover? I think Nuclear Assault is as far as I can go for crossover thrash before I stop liking it... but that might not be the case.
Another thing, who here enjoys the Hobb's Angel of Death? Mighty fine German (I think lol... they were on Steamhammer so I'm pretty sure they're German) thrash I must say.

I do not know about the hardcore elements, I don't think that's correct info unless its on a demo or single album. But Carnivore is not the kind of fast aggressive thrash, there are a lot of slow parts and the music is usually fun.
As for Testament, if I remember well, they never really did anything very fast, The Legacy is probably a bit faster, but not by much imo. And the latter stuff like Low and The Gathering weren't very fast either.

Another thing, who here enjoys the Hobb's Angel of Death? Mighty fine German (I think lol... they were on Steamhammer so I'm pretty sure they're German) thrash I must say.
Great great band. In the veins of Slayer, Dark Angel and Blood Feast....the real stuff.

It came with my copy of Elegies last week - listened to it once and first impression was: worth a download. I need to listen to it again, some good moments but Tempo is 5 times the album. I loved Tempo from the very first listen, Shovel may be a grower, time will tell.

That's a big generalisation.
And even if it is partially true, there are also alot of veteran metalheads that admire them.
With catchy riffs and melodies, and great technical musicianship, there's alot going for them.
I also find alot of alexi's guitar work to be very emotive and well thought out.
Just listen to the everytime I die solo, and tell me that's uninspired.
Alexi's vocals are a bit raspy, yes, but I find them more pleasurable than those demonic death grunts. And unlike alot of those death/black bands, he actually sings some of the time as well.

I got a question whats teh difference between modern day thrash and metalcore?
Well I must agree that there are some modern thrash band that I do not consider thrash because of the metalcore influences. As you know, thrash is practically dead, we'll never really get thrash like in the old days. Thrash nowadays has harsher vocals (not death metal, but way harsher than before), and the riffs are often more technical than before. Decades ago, bands would rely a lot on powerchords and speed whereas today alot of bands try to show that they know how to play the guitar by inventing some more complicated riffs. But they all lose a lot of speed and attitude.
If you listen to modern thrash and metalcore, you will notice that the riffs are different, the structure and speed and melodies (especially) won't be the same. Thrash would have a bit less melody than metalcore. Metalcore in its riffs can sometimes resemble to melodic death. And the metalcore vocals are screamed, where you don't hear much what the singer says, whereas thrash has only harsh vocals but that are not screamed/screached.
Sometimes bands will fuse thrash with metalcore which makes it a bit harder to differenciate, but one thing's for sure, you're better off listening to old thrash :P

But some stuff like A Perfect Murder I couldve swore was Thrash but because of the vocals its put in metalcore just annoys me how the difference between some of these bands is so narrow I cant tell. I mean you take The Haunted and then For e.g. As I Lay Dying (not a fan dont worry) and at first glance they sound a bit similar atleast the style. I mean if you break it down its not the same but at first ear its what it is in my mind, metal. IMO some SOME metalcore should be discussed in the thrash thread. Now i have 3 teenagers who listen to Rap (i make them listen to my stuff whenever possible, S.T., Rage, Misfits don't want to go to hard core) but i just let them decide for themselves, my parents never censorred my music i wont theirs. Practice what you preach.

Are Nevermore thrash? Someone referred to them as thrash in the Nevermore thread.
Either way, they rule.
Anyway, on to a couple of things I know are thrash:
1) I need to decide A)Which Slayer album to get next (I have Reign In Blood), and B)Which Metallica album to get next (I have Master Of Puppets). I've narrowed down my Metallica choices to Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning(not gonna get anything post-Cliff just yet), but I know nothing about Slayer's other albums. Suggestions?
2) I recently acquired a copy of Testament's Demonic. How does it compare to their other albums?

I wouldn't call Nevermore thrash myself.
From the little I've heard, Testament's Demonic is one of their more DM influenced albums. I prefer their earlier stuff with Alex Skolnick, IMO Chuck's voice was better, and the solos are KILLER. Check out "The New Order", "Practice What You Preach", and "The Legacy" (The latter of which I don't own yet, but it's one of their most highly acclaimed records).

For Slayer try Hell Awaits. It's as genius as RIB and it has also a lot of speed in it. You can also try Divine Intervention. IMO the songs on it are some kind of summary of their albums before that album. You only have to get used to the more 'modern' production.
For Metallica Ride the Lightning sounds more like Master of Puppets, but Kill 'm all is also great (especially the bass solo).

For the metallica albums, you can't go wrong either way.
For Slayer you may also want to look into Seasons in the Abyss, although it's nowhere near the speed of the earlier albums.
And as for Testament's "Demonic" don't even bother with it if your looking for thrash. Get one of their better albums like SickMetal said.

Aces High, by Iron Maiden
Bed of Nails, by Alice Cooper
Don't Stop at the Top, by Scorpions
Hellion, by W.A.S.P.
Latomeri, by Klamydia
Mass Hypnosis, by Sepultura
No Commands, by Stone
Oops!... I Did It Again, by Britney Spears
Rebel Yell, by Billy Idol
She Is Beautiful, by Andrew W. K.
Shot In the Dark, by Ozzy Osbourne
Silent Scream, by Slayer
Somebody Put Something In My Drink, by Ramones
Talk Dirty to Me, by Poison
Waiting, by King Diamond
So, no they didn't cover fear of the dark.
CoB are pretty thrashy, so it does make sense for them to be spoken about here.
