What guitarist do you think has the coolest sounding vibrato, or the best at doing it?

Friedman and SRV for me. Holy Wars and Hangar 18 show a good Friedman. Texas Flood has awesome vibrato in it.

i think keith richards has a great vibrato, same with b.b. king and clapton.

but this guy in this band called musket rumble has good vibrato.

Yeah, for sure. Zakk's harm. vibratos are incredible, especially considering he doesn't use a tremelo arm.

David Gilmour

He doesnt overdo it, but he doesnt underdo it either.

Malmsteen can do some bigger, faster vibrato's but doesn't always sound good. As for sounding good I'd say Zakk.

I'd say it would be a tie between Zakk Wylde & Angus Young....Tony Iommi gets an honorable mention!

Most of those guys mentioned have great vibrato

i like (in no certain order): zakk wylde, malmsteen, vai, satriani, dime, friedman, skolnick (testament), hendrix, clapton, gary moore (how has no-one mentioned him?), mark knopfler, nuno bettencourt, john sykes, brian may, richie kotzen, ok, i got sick typing, but there's lots of them

well i don't think so, cos he said he liked friedman, who (to the best of my knowledge) has never used a whammy bar (in megadeth at least)

For blus B.B. King but for everything else its Steve Vai. This guy has so many different types of vibrato and he just practices for hours playing one note with the different styles of vibrato, but it sure pays off.

Steve Vai Rocks!!!
---
Anyways... For the best vibrato? Um... Steve Vai... I think I may be forgetting one of my other favourites... Hm...

Yngwie is odd... Does anyone have the G3: Live in Denver DVD?
Well, lets just say that on "Rockin' In The Free World" he switches guitars three times because [I think] he broke a string on the first, the second went out of tune because he was -trying- to solo throughout the WHOLE BLOODY SONG!!! and the third I think something happened after the threw the guitar around himself.... He doesn't even play the song right, all he does it solo throughout the whole song... spotlight hog... Pfft....

tomslespaul
07-31-2005, 04:13 AM
i dont think vibrato arm use should count in this thread really coz its not exactly hard to get a good sound from a vibrato arm, however with fingers i guess its a bit more difficult...just my opinion though. I still stand by my dimebag statement however, as he used both whammy bar and "proper" vibrato :P Also, no ones mentioned Jimmy Page yet! !

woops, i left SRV out, he should be in my list too!

John Petruccis vibrato is killer, most use their wrist he just uses his finger and gets it to squeal like no tomorrow.

Steve Vai and Steve Morse, from what i can remember. I dont like Vai's vibrato very much, but its brilliant and i can appreciate it.

i don't believe it should matter how he does it, as long as it sounds good- but i agree petrucci is great!

I really like the way Steve Vai does vibratos. He just sort of rubs the fret, its really interesting to watch. They sound really awesome too.

Vibrato is pretty much the first thing I listen for with any guitarist (tone & vibrato). Who has the "best" vibrato is a pretty relative thing. I can only list my own favourites, which are:

Brian May
Gary Moore
Kelly Johnson

(all choices based strictly on finger vibrato)

Santana, Vai, Marty.

BB Kings vibrato is annoying, in my opinion.
