I hope this hasn't been done to death. I even searched for it. But who, in your opinion are the top 10 vocalists in rock history?

Here's mine...

1) Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
2) Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses)
3) Ronnie James Dio (Dio, Rainbow, Black Sabbath)
4) Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)
5) Freddy Mercury (Queen)
6) Paul McCartney (The Beatles, Wings, solo)
7) Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones)
8) Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of Dog, solo)
9) Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, and many more :-x)
10) David Lee Roth (Van Halen, solo)

This could always just be an opinion thing though.

Freddy Mercury deserves the #1 spot, he was the person that was behind composing Queen's music. And that range! woo he's amazing.

fr0zen, while i agree that mercury was pretty amazing, i wouldnt call him the man behind composing queen's music-- all 4 of them wrote #1 hits, and all 4 contributed a lot to just about everything they did. that said, freddie was an amazing vocalist and frontman, and would occupy my #1 spot on this list.

i'd also have to throw in carl/brian wilson (actually all the beach boys... amazing harmony), robert plant, jim morrison (just for the primal screams and such, mostly his voice wasnt too special), art garfunkel, meat loaf (for sheer power), steve perry, in no particular order. and bob dylan.

(yes, im just kidding about dylan)

I came up with my list based on pinache, swagger, personality, audience interaction, singing ability, and live performance.

01 Freddie Mercury
No man will ever be half the frontman Freddie was. Watching him hold the tens of thousands at Wembley in the palm of his hand during Live Aid was a testement to his powers. Inhuman, absolutley inhuman ability to have command over the hearts of audiences.

and then the rest far behind....

02 Mick Jagger - The Rolling Stones
Foul-mouthed swagger, dirty bastard, and he's still got it after all these years. See the 'Who the **** is Mick Jagger' t-shirt for more info. Perhaps no one else oozes 'rock and roll' frontman more than Sir Mick - at home in a club or in a stadium.

03 Paul Hewson - U2
Otherwise known as Bono, one of the greatest live frontmen ever. Charisma, honesty, and more audience interaction than you can shake a stick at. Whether it's pulling random drunk girls up during the ZooTV tour to share champagne, dancing with a girl during With Or Without You, or hauling guitar players out of the crowd to play People Get Ready, Bono is the king of getting the crowd closer to the band. Points for good live speeches as well while not de-railing the momentum of a show (a la Dave Grohl's endless stories). From placing in-show phone calls to the White House to immortalizing Live Aid (along with Mercury), Bono deserves to be up there.

04 Jim Morrison - The Doors
Endless sex appeal, the voice to fit in with the spidery rhythms of the Doors, and the voice of a legend shrouded in mystery and tragedy.

05 Roger Daltrey - The Who
Windmills, kicks, jumps...amazing live energy. A scream to die for. The perfect voice for the disillusionment with hippie culture and the realization that the world is a lot colder then people thought it was.

06 David Lee Roth - Van Halen
Spandex, antics...DLR was the face that propelled Van Halen to superstardum and provided something to front the amazing guitar work of Eddie Van Halen. Any lesser man would have been intimidated by the skill of the rest of the band.

07 Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin
Quiet and reserved, but live he would sing his heart out. It would cost him a lot of his upper range even as early Zeppelin IV, however. Very dignified until he started showing his chest during the later Zeppelin shows - we could have done without that.

08 Steve Perry - Journey
The most talented rock vocalist of all time. Smooth, radio-friendly vocals coupled with an amazing live energy helped Steve and Journey become one of the premiere arena bands of the late 70s and early 80s. A vocal range that should make any vocalist want to quit and go home.

09 Johnny Rotten - The Sex Pistols
Bastard, bastard, bastard. Spitting, angry, attack dog lyrics, vengeful live performances. Whether the Pistols were the beginning of mainstream punk or the beginning of the end of punk, they had one hell of a leader.

10 Sting - The Police
Trained in jazz, an amazingly versatile range, and an appreciation and incorporation of many music styles into his repitoire. Sting and The Police were the biggest band in the world until they were dethroned by U2 in the mid 80s.

Man,there are a LOT of good lead singers out there, so it gets hard to choose the best ones.Even knowing that the old guys rock(Robert Plant,Steven Tyler,Freddie Mercury,etc....),this time I'll try to focus on the younger ones. Here goes the list (with no specific order):
1-James Dean Bradfield-Manic Street Preachers (He plays the lead guitar too,so I think he deserves some credit! His voice is awesome!)
2-Layne Staley-Alice In Chains (enough said!)
3-Serj Tankian-System Of A Down (He has a great voice and he's hilarious)
4-Matt Heafy-Trivium (He's still very young but the tallent is with him)
5-Trent Reznor-[NIN] (actually he's the band,but he's a great musician)
6-Adam Duritz-Counting Crows (He's a bit dumb,but I like his humor)
7-Scott Weiland-Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver (He's got one of the best voices ever)
8-Chino Moreno-Deftones (A lot of people don't like him,but I think he's extremely underrated)
9-Brian Molko-Placebo (An inspired guy.He knows what he does)
10-Cedric Bixler-At Thr Drive-In/The Mars Volta (He's weird, but his lyrics are perfect and his voice is a bomb!)

Well,that's it!ROCK ON!

I've only got a few...

Billie Joe Armstrong/Green Day- He has an amazing voice and an even better stage presence. He has the funniest dances and hand gestures he does while he performs, not to mention he is pretty damn sexy.

Freddy Mercury/Queen- He's just a legend, end of discussion.

Brandon Urie/Panic! At the Disco- He's a great singer and has pretty good stage presence, he's really dramatic and theatrical during performances which is awesome.

These are just my top three guys. I'm not claiming they are top three for everyone, 'cause most likely they're aren't.

Anybody that says Eddie Vedder ore Kurt cobain just doesnt make sence to me because out of all the grunge singers chris cornell and layne staley were the best. Especially cornell who has a really wide range unlike kurt and eddie who are more monotone singers. And if it werent for chris cornell eddie vedder may not have ever been in pearl jam because chris allowed eddie to sing with them on the temple of the dog project where he met his future bandmates.

There is a difference between words vocalist and frontman I think.

10 greatest vocalists:

Ian Gillan (the golden voice of rock)
Freddie Mercury (classic rock-voice)
David Coverdale (fantastic blues voice)
Glenn Hughes (unbelievable high and dizzy voice)
Ronnie Dio (the owner of many classic rock-songs)
Paul Rogers (one of the greatest rock 'n' roll singers)
Roger Daltrey (the voice of such ass-kicking band as The Who)
Chris Cornell (breakneck grunge vocal)
Janis Joplin (the best singing woman)
Robert Plant (he also has a strong but specific vocal)

10 greatest frontmen:

Elvis Presley (rock 'n' roll king)
Robert Plant (he is mostly the frontman but not the vocalist)
Jim Morrison (the greatest person of the 60's)
Ozzy Osbourne
David Coverdale ("...it would be better he didn't try to be Robert Plant." - John Lord)
Kurt Cobain (the frontman of the last innovative band)
Mick Jagger
John Lennon
Roger Daltrey
Freddie Mercury

2) corey taylor of slipknot

Though I know I'll probably get flamed for it, I don't think Taylor has barely any talent , especially lyrically.

And Kurt Cobain?
Come on People, Lyrically, sure he was pretty freaking good, but I could never

my list would have to be:

1. Freddie Mercury (Well duh, the dude was by far amazing)
2. Davey Havok (Someone said if you've seen them live you know...I know, the man was amazing)
3. John Lennon (Lyrically, he wrote some of the best songs ever written)
4. Maynard James Kennan
5. Getty Lee
6. (Though I know I'll get flamed) Ville Valo
And from there...I don't really know

Uhh...this thread isn't just lists of great singers. It's also for great frontmen, I'm guessing that's why Cobain is being mentioned so often. He was a lyrical genius, and a decent singer, but one of the most memorable frontmen of all time.
