Yea, Malcolm is a much better player than Ang, anf they will both tell you that.

He let Angus play lead cause he wanted to have a free hand for drinking during solo breaks. Then he quit drinking.

malcolm young of ac/dc is way under-rated because when u hear ac/dc live, the rythym section of him and cliff never messes up, but you'll hear the occasional tweak of angus' e string when hes tapping or solo-ing. and when angus' guitar is like 56 times louder than malcolm's, it doesnt help people hear how good malcolm is

Agreed. Malcom Young is (according to Angus) a better guitarist then him. Malcom just doesn't mind playing backup and staying out of the spotlight. But he can play solos just as well as Page.

Malcom has been playing longer than Angus, and can learn songs by ear in 30 minutes (read Two Sides To Every Glory-AC/DC).

Glad you agree with my praise of the genius Tom Scholz, and that is kind of what im getting at with the Jimmy Page comment but also many players seem to think hes sloppy, and i just see it as more of his brilliance. His playing is so loose and he just creates amazing landscapes(as it were) with his music i.e. Kashmir, Bron-Y-Aur

Pete Townshend and The Edge. Townshend could put more emotion into a 4 bar solo in Baba O'Riley than EVH could into an entire song. Along with that idea, The Edge is also comically underrated. A minimalist with the guitar, just as David Gilmour is, he's never selfish in a song, and will always play for the song and not for his ego. When he does bust out some solos live though, the walls come down (see Bullet The Blue Sky live).

Of course, also, I'd say Keith Richards. He's famous, imfamous, yet never listed among the top guitar players. The man is an encyclopedia of licks. He can sneeze and a great guitar riff will come out.

has anyone said neil young yet? rumour has it he can outshred clapton and page. he is an amazing songwriter as well, and i think that overshadows his prowess on the guitar. he could do all types of crazy stuff, but he chooses to play two notes if two notes are all that are needed.

Yeah, Neil Young is definately over-looked. Some of his stuff with Crazy Horse is amazing. But since hes such a great songwriter, that does over-shadow the guitar.

They are both exceptional guitarist but i reckon its actaully Kirk who doesnt really get the respect and the acknowledgement he fully deserves. You watch their documentary, and you get a great insight, Kirk comes off across as the more soft-spoken personality, and its full on James and Lars running the show. And i guess Jason couldnt cope no long of the power structure of the band.

And just because you can't play Eruption doesn't make him a god. It's you who suck. I can't play Crazy Train solo, does that make Randy Rhoads a god? No. It's not about how hard it is to play! I truely can't believe that you ppl in here don't mention Tommy Shaw but for a couple times, and then don't even post a reply to that! TS is by far one of the best, most talented guitarists of all time and also one of the most underrated. How often to we hear about him anywhere? Pull the shyt out of your ears and listen to Crystal Ball. I mean truely listen to the song. That 12 string acoustic in the beginning is very hard stuff to do, and it's in Dorian mode. TS is also a very talented songwriter. He can play about anything with strings on it. How about Boat On The River where he's on the mandolin? As far as UNDERRATED guitarists goes, he's the man IMO.

Larry Lalonde has shredding qualities plus very innovative tone and ideas...

Rory Gallagher for blues guitarists I'd say, he still hasn't got the attention he deserved

Neil Young. Yeah he's no shredder, and no afaik he can't even play one single scale correctly (what he said at least). But he can write songs on guitar like hardly anyone else and his solos rock. Noone can play better solos than him just using 1 or 2 notes actually. He's the positive contrast to any shredder, minimalistic play but full energy.

And finally Jerry Cantrell of alice in chains. Too many people still avoid alice in chains thinking its just another nirvana-like band, but unlike Nirvana they have musical qualities, especially jerry cantrell. His riffs, solos and his use of wawa were fantastic.
