Huh... I love "Forest of October", that REALLY sounds like the newer stuff. That's really one of the only Orchid/Morningrise era songs I've heard, but I've a few more.

Morningrise is so different from like deliverance and blackwater park. Its disturbing. The production is so raw, and the bass reminds me of a rubber band. I doubt theyd be going back to that, because they would lose so many followers.

the only song i don't like by them is the grand conjuration, it's not natrual to hear opeth using the same riff for a whole song (and the actual riff isn't actually that good anyway). also because it's being used as a ****ing SINGLE(?!) which kinda seems like opeth are selling out a tad, the rest of the album was o.k. though :D

Any Opeth songs that I dislike? ... *Thinks*... no, don't think so. I do find Wreath and By the Pain I See in Others to be rather boring, and probably their worst songs (oddly enough I find the rest of their album some of their best), but they're far from terrible songs, and I still don't mind listnening to em every once in a while.

I hear that. I can just listen and hear it's out of my league. The intro has those little hidden PMs in it, and the solo is faster, the soft parts sound like a bitch.

Probably just extremely hard to memorize. I mean, my friend could do most of Opeth's drum patterns, except for some of the solo's and his lack of double bass.

That's mainly due to the different type of song structure used on GR. The drumming on GR sounds like it has been influenced by a certain other band ;)

I have an prOpethblem. Nice word eh?

See, I find their more brutal work (Ghost of Perdition, Deliverance, BWP, White Cluster) far more to my liking, but it lacks the variation of their other material (The Moor, The Drapery Falls, Bleak, etc.). Which albums would you recommend that is either a combination of both, or something entirely different? I've got BWP (good), Still Life (eh), Deliverance (awesome), and GR (perfect)...all my own opinion of course. I'm thinking about going for Morningrise next, but I've also heard good things about MAYH.

I find MAYH similar in song structure to Still Life, but it's a heavier album than SL, so it will probably be more to your liking. Otherwise, try Orchid. I prefer that album to morningrise [/opinion]

When, Demon of the Fall and the Amen Corner are probably the best samplers of MAYH as well if you want to try-before-you-buy or whatever

Sorry for the double post, but I'm trying to make a pre- BWP mix, and I've got "The Moor" and "Black Rose Immortal" (So I'd might as well make 2 CDs, cause most songs are pretty long). And "Face of Melind" and "Godhead's Lament" is downloading.

What are some other REALLY good ones. I know I'll get things like "All of them", but I'm trying to get a good sample from each album from Orchid to Still Life.

Quite a great start if you ask me...hehe.
If you go onto www.gigantour.com there's a jukebox and you can listen to all the bands that are playing in the States/Canadian shows - including Sanctity which I don't like at all. You will probably get a short Opeth set (in terms of songs, perhaps 5 songs if it's just LoG and Sanctity) but I doubt it will be "The Drapery Falls" - Mikael said in a recent interview that he was so incredibly sick of playing that song so it might just be the newer songs such as "Ghost of Perdition" and "The Grand Conjuration" (which adds up to at least 20 minutes or so) and maybe some stuff from Still Life.

Have fun ey!

Sweet. And yea, I can see how he's tired of the song, it's so freaking popular.

I'll be happy either way, but it'd be REALLy cool to hear a BWP song, like Bleak, cause Lamentations didn't even have it, and some Still Life.

How do u guys think the soft from ghost reveries compare to the songs on damnation. I think that Isolation years is particularly beautiful but damnation songs are better than atonement and hours of wealth.

Damnation has a really dark sound to it's songs. On Ghost Reveries, they seem to have a happier sound. But I love Hours Of Wealth. Such a kickass solo.

yeah bleak is a really catchy song, i had that one stuck in my head for a while, but currenlty i have the melodic part of black rose immortal stuck in my head after the clean part that starts around 9 minutes

Bleak is catchy but I hate the chorus, it's so lame. The song is brutal with this great writhing melody and then the chorus is just...boring. Other than that it's great, but the chorus kinda kills the whole mood for me.

But does anyone like their softer melodies better than the electric? I personally always wait for the clean parts more than the electric. I LOOOOOOVE the electric parts, they are just so.......godlike. But I really admire the soft stuff more. Like I said, I don't bash the hard stuff. Master's Apprentice, The Leper Affinity, Wreath, all of their songs are really my favorites, it's just those cleans.

I mean listen to "To Bid You Farewell", "In Mist She is Standing", "To Rid the Disease", the first 5 minutes of "The Drapery Falls", the opening to "Dirge for November". That is legendary stuff. I can't get over it. I honestly, whole heartedly, say Opeth is like today's Led Zeppelin.

Which is stretching it, cause "*Blank* is today's *Blank*", is bad all, but when you think musical genius, the amount of work they've made, the amount of epic quality....they're just the best band since Led Zeppelin, if not equal or better.

This is me just kind of rambling, but I guess it makes conversation. :D

Indeed I often had the same idea as the two guys above me. I don't know really, I like their hard and soft stuff equally, just because it always sounds sincere, and not forced. Their soft material has tons of melody, and always that intricate feel that makes it sound so good. Their heavy stuff though is either obliteratingly brutal or also has beautiful melodies through it. I can't pick a fave.

Well, I can OFFICIALLY die happy now.... I have been to my first concert, and Opeth owned.

They weren't the main headline, but they had an amazing set.

Set list:

Ghost of Perdition
The Leper Affinity
Windowpane
The Grand Conjuration
Deliverance

Mikael had his fair share of jokes as well. After "Ghost of Perdition" he said,m

"Next, we're going to play some Clapton. *big smile* We are Opeth. We're from Stockholm, that's in Sweden. In Sweden, everybody fucks everybody. Polar bears roam the streets, and everyone is pretty."

:haha:haha:haha

I laughed so hard. It was awesome though, I couldn't have asked for more (okay, I could have, but why be picky?) Sanctity (they were good, for a metalcore band they ruled), and the maoin headline was Lamb of God (I loved it, buyt Opeth was the kicker).

Anyway, first concert, just great, I came out half deaf, and loved every minute of it. :D

It was weird, I asked her how she liked Opeth and LoG when we left, and she said, "I liked it, I liked LoG better though."

Now, if I hated my mom, I would've snapped, but she said she likes it better cause it has a better vibe, it's more energetic, and she can nod her head to it better, but she said she still likes Opeth a lot.

If you can fit your dong in that little hole, I suggest you screw it, because that may be the only action you get in your life. :p:

dont worry ill cut a hole big enough in the cd to fit it and get a chick so i could do both at the same time.

But seriously, im surprised that michael has such a good sense of humor becuz he always seems so serious during interviews. Its also funny how technical his english is in comparison to most americans. He speaks with very precise pronunciation and sentence structures but then again when u learn to speak english in a european country u dont grow up with all the slang that ****s up ur way of speaking.

What'd she think of Mike's jokes though?

I mean, god he's funny, but i still wonder.

She found it funny, of course, my mom's no pushover, and all proper, she's great. But her head was hurting then (not from the show, she just gets headaches) and I don't think she cared at the time.

And I agree, his english is awesome. I talk properly most times, I do have a southern drawl when I'm lazy, or tired, but I always have good english, the way I type on here is basically how I talk.

Also, it's funny if you watch that in-studio "Harvest" video on Youtube, at the end, Mikael's in the little room, and in the mic, he says "Do you know who I am?!? I'm fuckin' Mikael!!"

It was just hilarious.:haha

I just got Morningrise yesterday. Not their best album (a little too disjointed IMO) but very good nonetheless. I'm just missing Orchid and I'll have every Opeth album. Woohoo!

Anyways, what does everyone think of the inclusion of Eternal Soul Torture on the reissue disc? Personally I think it was a pretty bad idea. It's a terrible recording that overall kinda detracts from the overall quality of the record. There has to be some better Opeth demos lying around!

I don't get why people don't like Morningrise... it's such a great album. I'm really hooked on to Orchid right now, but I can't get used to GR at all.

I have *shame on me* only a copy of Morningrise, but I actually recopied it without Eternal Soul Torture and put some Woods of Ypres on it instead lol. I wish Opeth rerecorded it, just the song title is awesome already.

Personally, I love the album.

I never said I didn't like Morningrise! It is a great album, I just prefer Opeth's later work. GR is a weird album for me. It was the first Opeth album I purchased, and I worked my way back from there. I was in love with that cd for a long time, but it doesn't really do anything for me anymore.

Exactly, like if someone buys Orchid, and loves it, and then buys Ghost Rerveries, they might have mixed feelings.

Personally, I started with some downloading, I went to Limewire and downloaded the songs with the most hosts (Master's Apprentice and Deliverance at the time) and I fell in love. I got some of Blackwater Park, I think another Deliverance song, and In Mist She was Standing and Forest of October from Orchid.

I'm always short on cash, so I always wanted to buy, and I finally got BWP and GR, and loved GR. It's so much more musically diverse, but I listen to it less than BWP, cause BWP is just pure pwnage.

So, basically I guess what I'm saying is, if you're starting out, just get some songs from each era of Opeth, and go. I love all of it, I love hearing how they've progressed musically from Orchid to GR, it's just amazing, and it's all great, I've only found one song I can honestly say I hardly listen to cause I don't REALLY like it (Dirge for November).

Burning_Angel

Adequete.

I started by downloading Demon of the Fall, then I immediatley wanted more, so i got Blackwater Park and was blown away.

Then... Still Life, My Arms, Your Hearse, Deliverance, then Morningrise, Ghost Reveries, Orchid and Damnation.

I still dont like Morningrise/Orchid very much though.

Maybe. I like all of their material, it just demonstrates how they progressed and evolved throughout their existence as a band. However i'd pick Orchid over Morningrise any day.

Ghost Reveries was indeed a pretty weird album, but there's still plenty of the usual Opeth in there.

EDIT: To the invisible_man, I think the inclusion of the rehearsal tracks on Orchid and Morningrise was pretty cool. Partially for the same reasons that I've just mentioned, that it allows you to see how the band has grown from the conception to current period. Plus it's just an extra thing for the fans. Even though the production is horrid, if you don't like their inclusion you can just stop the cd after the final official track, no?

Mikey's vocals are totally off on the intro to Dirge.

Yea, I guess I could give it mroe chance, but it'll take time.

And I agree, strangely, it just fits. I don't know if it's the transition from the melodic-ness of "The Drapery Falls", and just progresses to the next song or what, it just fits.

I really think the first 5 songs on BWP just flow SOOOO well, I usually skip "Funeral Portrait" and "Patterns in the Ivy" for some reason. I'm not sure why. I love the songs, I just never listen to them.....

Most metal woman here are over 30 and only like slayer in terms of hard bands. :p:

When i do try and talk to a girl my pickup( :p: ) line mostly consist of letting them hear my music(that i make) or such so i have a reason to nick their mp3 and hear what they like.

It mostly ends in me hearing a CoF song or such and having to fake a phonecall and get the hell out of there :p:

But to not completly spam this topic: Who hear actually likes Anders his drumming to? I mean in terms of style Anders and Lopez had some simelarities but lopez feld more at home at the harder stuff.

:haha well I don't pressume that it would be much different here although its better now when I get to go to the over-18 shows and escape the girls who probably know very little about the bands they are about to witness.

Opeth: I think Lopez has a very unique style of playing drums when you compare him to other drummers who have been/are in Opeth. I think what I liked best about him was his variation and the way he could swap and change with the song without sounding off-beat or discomforting. But then again I am no drumming expert.

I like St. Anger for similar reasons, but I would never, EVER call it the best. The album just pisses me off with the randomness as opposed tot he usually much appreciated gradual progressions.
