I'mjust wondering who you guys prefer Hetfield (metallica rhythem) or Stradlin (gnr rhythem) and why? I personally think that Stradlins probably the better guitarist and uses more creative rhythems, although Hetfield has a better voice.
Your thoughts?

hetfield imo, without a shadow of doubt

Well, I think they both have their strong points. James does come up with some catchy riffs, i.e. "Seek and Destroy", "Master of Puppets", but I think Izzy has a little more uniqueness to his playing. But they both do play back-up to two wonderful guitarists, and they know how to compliment the lead styles. So as for who I prefer, I'd have to say Hetfield, only because he creates little riffs that I can't get out of my head.

Izzy. Slash and Izzy made up for each other (same goes for Dave Kushner). But Izzy's rhymt is just so good...

Hetfield, he's an enormously under-rated rhythm player. also, can people please learn to ****ing spell rhythm?

Hetfield is fast. Very very fast. Stradlin seems a lot less more about technique and more about what sounds pleasing to the ear, which i prefer to 16 to the bar power chords at 200BPM. So, Stradlin.

Hetfield is defenetly faster, but Izzy is extremely unique and isn't playin what slash is at all times like Hetfield is with Kirk...So..Izzy :peace:

stradlin owns hetfield, now thats my opinion, hetfield is faster, but izzy has better more complicated rhythms, izzy can write great songs, and he's overall just a better musician, so i pick izzy.

I prefer stradlin basically because i prefer g'n'r. As guitarists they are both overshadowed by brilliant lead guitarists, but both write the majority of their bands material. Stradlin also has quite a good voice on him but Hetfields is better. As to the rhythm (sp?) side of their characters Hetfields definetley faster but i think Stradlins are more creative.

I'm a rhythm guitarist myself, so anyone who plays rhythm is ok in my book. But just like what the dude said, Hetfield multi-tasks and is damn good at it.

Singing while strumming chords I can do, but to sing simultaneously while playing the riffs Hetfield plays is totally different. Takes massive skill and talent.

amen brother.
ya i probably shoulda mentioned that i am also a singer, but i play lead and rhythm, as there is another lead player in the band.
but ya...its insanely hard to play the riffs metallica plays, and sing at the same time; most other bands cannot do this, as they just chord and sing over the chords (like today's new music.)

Izzy has a solo career/band (the Ju Ju Hounds) where he sings. I really like his voice actually.

This is a hard question for me, since both are good at what they do. However, I'm leaning towards Izzy. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for his contributions to GNR, especially when he wrote the majority of their songs. While the same can be said for Hetfield (as far as the writing of the songs), he gets more credit for it because he's the frontman of one of the biggest bands ever, whereas Izzy was overshadowed by Axl.

hmm....i think Stradlin is the better songwriter/guitarist, but Hetfield is the better singer by far...and Izzy hasn't done as much material as Hetfield seeing as GnR crawled into a corner and died....

so although i LOVE Stradlin...i'm gonna have to say Hetfield.

I have a bootleg tape of Metallica playing on the Master of Puppets tour, they play all the songs, like, twice the speed than the album versions. That, my friends, was Hetfield when he was great.

hetfeild makes riffs that really wont get the **** out of your head. Like blackened and master of puppets and battery and i could go on for hours. I think james is not recognized as much as he should be. Cause he is a kickass rhythm guitarist.

Hetfield hands down. He writes heavier stuff than Straddlin does.

flame843

I like them both...

A lot of people don't realize how technical Hetfield's playing can be. He plays quite a few of Metallica's solos (notably the 1st solo in Master of Puppets and the second solo in To Live Is To Die) and he's written a lot of interesting classical and blues-sounding stuff (the acoustic parts in To Live is to Die, the interlude of The Unforgiven, etc.) Also, he's VERY fast. Downpicking nearly eight minutes worth of eight notes at 200 + BPM in Master of Puppets is no easy task.

Stradlin is also very good. He has a unique rhythm style that doesn't draw heavily on anyone else's, and does a lot of cool melodies. His method is completely different than Hetfield's, so, as has been said before, it's like comparing apples and oranges.

Hetfield and Stradlin are both underrated and are overeshadowed by the lead guitarists in their bands. Stardlin made better sounding riffs but Hetfields seem to stick to you more. Stradlin is good but Hetfield blows him out of the water skillwise. As some other people stated Hetfield would play rhythm at high speeds for long periods while singing at the same time.Being able to multitask like that is difficult. Slash and Kirk Hammet wouldnt be able to play all those solos if it wasnt for their rhythm backing them up. If they did there songs would sound like ****. If i had to choose one of them I would say Hetfield, he has more skill by far.

hetfield is the ****ing man. if izzy stradlin dressed in a more masculine way i'd think more highly of him. i mean him and gilby clarke were great guitarists in one of the biggest rock bands of the last 20 years, why did they have to dress like sissy's?

and for ^^^^ i am pretty sure to live is to die was based upon riffs cliff had come up with, it wasn't written and arranged note for note by him. and hetfield did indeed play the slow solo on it and write the acoustic part as it is, it was probably just based on the stuff cliff had made.

Why do some of you people think that because someone is more complicated, they are better? Base your decision on more than just speed or complexity. Both Stradlin and Hetfield although stupid to compare with each other (not to mention compare any band, I mean who the hell in the end cares? Gn'R and 'tallica are two different bands).

In the end, I'd say Hetfield though. To me, Stradlin doesn't have enough memorable parts and the only Gn'R album that's really fully worth it to me is Appetite for Destruction anyways. Certain songs of course, after that album, I could credit Stradlin with, but just....nah.

bean-o
12-07-2005, 10:04 PM
But most of those memorable Gn'R songs that have incredible riffs are from Izzy. Izzy is more classic rock style (not saying GNR is classic rock), but can still go heavy. Listen to You Could be Mine. James is trash metal/heavy rock. Is downpicking and singing all that matters to a Rhythm player? No, creativity is. Listen to James play, his riffs are outstanding, but throughout the whole song, it will be the same. Izzy changes his rhythms and voicings a lot more throughout the whole song. James sure as hell is more technical, but I am more a stickler to creativity, so I go with Izzy easily. IMO:
-Technique, Hetfield>Stradlin'
-Creativity, Stradlin>Hetfield
Slash and Izzy>James and Kirk
GNR>'Tallica :D:
