Frusciante is awesome, one of my favorite guitarists. His improvising on Live at Slane Castle is great, and unfortunately I don't have Hyde Park...I'd say the likes of Mike McCready is at least on par with Frusciante...it depends on what you're going for. McCready has the better chops, and uses his effects greatly, and Frusciante is more geared towards the simple yet beautiful solos.

Then you have Buckethead, who I believe is on another level apart from any guitarist this millenium as of yet...just check out Electric Tears and Population Override.

There's also Jeff Beck, who put out some great 90's and 00's albums...but would rather classify him as a 70's guitarist. Check out the songs Nadia and Declan, they will blow your mind.

John Frusciante - RHCP (i absolutely love how he is a team player, his chemistry with flea makes him even better. Oh yeah, he also rips well on Mars Volta besides RHCP)

Mike Einziger - Incubus (underrated, beautiful style, knows how to rock it with his pedals well, even tho its no tom morello, his ability to be one with his leads/rhythm part is great, plus he's got a fro)

Tom Morello - RATM/Audioslave (yeah, he's just great because u can't emulate him. innovative as well)

Matt Bellamy - Muse (have u seen him live? he's bananas, but not only does he rock hard, but he can carry a tune like no other, and he can fly up and down the neck. he's also got some SWEET guitars)

Josh Homme - QOTSA (wat distortion and tremolo should sound like. He can capture the darkness in his guitar...or is it his drinking?)

Omar Rodriquez Lopez - ATDI/tMV (the new lefty of the guitar world with more pedals than musician's friend has in their inventory, knows how to use them, is a genuis on guitar and his punk work with ATDI was sweet and his random dancing is wonderful. he also has a fro!)

1. Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge Version)

You only get one instance of a guitar player you silly person you.

Quoted for truth

I'm sure the 5 best guitarists at any time would be some unknown flamenco players in Spain who can't play live because they practice 10 hours a day.

My 5 favorites of the 90's

1. Tom Morello
2. Omar A. Rodriguez/Lopez
3. John Frusciante

Umm, I can't think of anyone else that really matters from the 90's. There you go 90's, only 3 guitar players that were any good, great job

Jerry Cantrell: AIC and his solo stuff = amazing. I just wish he would actually get off his lazy ass and make new cds.
Dimebag: why did he have to die? WHY!?
Tom Morello: GENIUS
Petrucci: I have just started listening to this guy and he is awesome.
Steve Morse: I think he fits in the 90s. He is still alive so it doesn't matter. This guy is a beast. Deep Purple Rules.
If Steve doesn't count then Omar Rodriguez Lopez: The Mars Volta makes some strange music but I like it. How many batteries do you think he uses in a year for all his pedals if he doesn't use adapters?

Everyone who didn't have Mike McCready, and Jerry Cantrell in their list are total morons and their opinions are automatically null.

1. Jerry Cantrell. His rythm guitar can be as crushing as We Die Young and Died, to as melodic and beautiful as Nutshell and Brother. His leads are pure emotion, and he doesn't waste a single note, even when he's shredding. He does the amazing Fender Strat sounds like on Jar of Flies EP, to the straight up metal solos on Facelift, to the intelligent toneful solos on Dirt and Alice in Chains.
2. Mike McCready. No one can touch him in improv, live he can improv solos anywhere from perfect SRV impressions to hard assed straight up massive guitar solos).
3. John Frusciante. Amazing feel.
4. Kirk Hammett. Black album came out in the 90's. Amazing guitarist and I love his solos, he has a ton of feeling and great chops, and Bleeding Me is an excellent post 1991 solo.
5. Bradley Nowell. Amazing guitarist, he had a ton of feel, great tone, and was an excellent all around musician.

Honorable mention: Billy Corgan and James Iha, Cobain, the Godsmack guy, Dimebag, Adam Jones Tom Morello and I'm sure I ****ed this list up. :(

You mate, are a faggot.
You think that everyone is going to share your opinion?
Some of us aren't total morons, and everyone has an opinion.
If I don't like Mike McCready, or Jerry Cantrell, I couldn't fucking care less,

You shouldn't gt flamed Frenchyfungus after all they are your top 5 guitarists as the thread asks you to name, and every single guitarist on the planet is great and unique in their own way. To each his own I say.

Mine...in no particular order, I'm gunna name guitarist from bands that started around the 90's:

Mark Tremonti [Creed, Alter Bridge] *** Writes great songs and a nice change in todays popular music.
Tom Morello [RATM, Audioslave] *** The originality just keeps me transfixed.
John Frusciante [RHCP] *** Great writer, great live, great improv.
Daron Malakian [SOAD] *** Doing interesting things for charted music these days - some good tunes coming out of SOAD lately.
Chris Henderson [3 Doors Down] *** Has great solo's which ironically are not in most of the bands' singles, so therefore most people don't hear them - one of the best parts of 3DD.

Not a very complete list but put it this way - in their own right each of these guys is dominating his genre and is looking good for a bright future. (IMO).

and every single guitarist on the planet is great and unique in their own way. To each his own I say.

not true. i am the worst ****in' guitarist ever. :D i mean it.

1.dave navarro - my fave, amazing riffs, amazing feel, amazing band, that broke up again!
2.trey spruance - the guy behind mr bungle, just as freaked out as mike patton, only playing an actual instrument
3.stone gossard - actually, as pearl jam goes, stone's riffs appeal to me more than mccready's solos; well, when they still used to have riffs in their songs, that is...
4.jack white, why not? i'm no fan of his, but i gotta admit he's a hell of a guitarist

and this is gonna be so lame but

5.james hetfield - you don't have to like him but you cannot deny he's prob'ly the best rythm gtrist ever, and it's on 'load' that he proved it [go on, you angry true-metallica fans, flame me!]

Although I admire you for putting jack white in there adam, I doubt you have heard any of his 90s stuff. I mistakenly believed that there debut alum had been released in 1999, but it was actually 2001. which is why I replaced him with Dean DeLeo in my list.

I'm not much into the whole 90's grunge scene, but I do like a couple of the bands/guitarists.

-Mccready/Gossard
-Nowell
-Cobain
-Slash
-Anastasio...this might just be my opinion based on my genre preference but I really do not see how more people didn't list him? I read threw all the pages and only two people mentioned him. There is no way Trey cannot be in the top 5 for greatest guitarists of the 90's but yet people seem to overlook him...but yet again that is probably because of genre preference.

-I like the Chili Peppers and all but i really dont consider Fruciante one of the greatest guitars of the 90's

John Frusciante - Yeah, well he sure seems to lead the list which is great, he certainly deserves it. Minimalistic play, great feeling and seems to be an interesting personality as well...

Jerry Cantrell - His solos were great, his songwriting as well

Larry LaLonde - Potential shredder, just too sick

Buckethead - He's so special and so great. He deserves to be here :D

Shawn Lane - Probably the technically best guitarist of all time. Period.

Al di Meola - The list wouldn't be complete without at least one jazz/Fusion guitarist.

Tom Morello - great great riff maker, with original guitar sounds that really pushes the boundaries

Kim Thayil - great guitarist with a tendency to shred mindlessly..he can write really hypnotic guitar parts (Never The Machine Forever)

Adam Jones - KING for subtle guitar nuances...he can create a guitar part consisting of just scratching guitar strings...making some really crazy feedback too...all of this becomes part of his playing....so that pretty much inspires me

Billy Howerdel - able to create the greatest of music, brilliant song writer.

James Hetfield - urmm....DUH?

but, its not an opinion that mike mccready was a top 5 guitarist of the 90's. thats a cold hard fact. if you ever wondered what it would be like to have jimi hendrix in a band, well then lsiten to pearl jam. mike can bust out finger-burning metal solos (such as in "Go", "Animal", and others), or soulful blues leads such as in "yellow ledbetter". the man is brilliant that can play any style of guitar and improvise better than any guitarist i have ever heard.
