i recently tried tapping. the thing is i feel more comfortable using the side of the pick instead of my finger i can produce a much more powerful note with the pick than my finger. i would like to know if neone else does this? and is this ok, is it still tapping??

When I first started I used the side of my pick, but the side of the pick keeps touching the other strings so I started using my fingure and started getting better. It also sounded better then with the pick.

I use both...I vary..depending on how quick I need the pick after the tapping section I do.

Jake lee does it alot ive tried but i cant get much sound out of it. my normal finger tapping is really quiet anyway. ive heard of it but i think its easier to do the normal finger tapping

yes u can use a pick but with ur finger u can do a lot more then just make a nice note sound. try to do something like this 7-0-3-0 really fast, wish a pick u can only really go for that 7-3-0 sound

Using a pick is good for pedal tone tapping but for sweep tapping, using your fingers is a must.

If you want to do any tapping past Van Halen sorts, you are going to have to toss the pick. You couldn't do any double stops with a pick (essentially) , so if you are serious about getting great at tapping, toss the pick. If you just want it as a minor part of your style, do what's best.

I really only tap with the pick when It's faster than your normal tapping.

A good example is the tapping in 'One' like said, or although i can't play it, Satch's Surfing with the alien

I use my middle finger. When i tapped with my pick, it always felt like I was sawing the string in half and I thought that it would make the string snap...

I use the pick for fast stuff but for more droning stuff(queen style) I use my finger

They both have their uses...in my experience, tapping with the pick gives a much sharper attack and a brighter sound.

I think tapping with the pick can be done at a higher speed on one position, but when you need to change position fast a finger has more dexterity. Somehow the finger is also more usefull for long legato licks because you have more grip to put energy in the pull-off while the pick seems to put more sound into the note you're tapping. Satriani uses both in satch boogy. The pick is used in a small lick to create a fast repeating pedal tone over a simple three note melody. Later in the song (about halfway) he uses finger tapping to play a long strange sounding piece in wich the melody seems to shift so smoothly you hardly notice. So it both has it's use in my opinion depending on the king of music you want to make.

I used to use my pick but I found that the more you use your middle finger the better it sounds as it hardens up like your fretting hand. So yeh just do what evers best although using the pick does have its limitations

i find that pick tapping is best if you're just playing thrills and moving your left hand around the place but if you're doing pull offs after you tap you should use your finger
