So the new 'Stubbs the Zombie" videogame has a soundtrack of old 50's tunes covered by indie artists ie. Walkmen, Rogue Wave, Raveonnettes, Death Cab for Cutie, Dandy Warhols, among others. Kind of got me thinking what other good covers there are of older songs by indie bands. For instance, Iron and Wine does a couple great covers - Such Great Heights and Waiting for Superman. Leslie Feist does a great job of Secret Heart originally by Ron Sexsmith too. Anyways, if you can think of any nifty covers I'd love to hear about them.

Well, I think Weezer does Velouria better than the Pixies.

Also..

Ben Kweller's version of the Sweater song (weezer)
Ben Folds Five ( all their covers are great) - She don't use Jelly (flaming Lips?) Video Killed the Radio Star (the Buggles) and Tiny Dancer.
Rilo Kiley - After Hours (Velvet Underground)

I'll think up some more.

Don't think so, but I seem to remember the 'creep' cover was on that eskimofriends site anyway. There was a good one of 'hallelujah' as well, and some beautiful recordings of the lovely Lisa Hannigan.

I downloaded a live cover of Something by the Beatles that said it was by Radiohead, but I'm not sure if it's real. It's a good cover either way, but things tend to get mislabeled on limewire.

Has anyone ever heard of those warchild albums. Bands like feeder, ash, starsailor and muse cover old classics like house of the rising sun. I think (though i'm not 100%) that they bring one out every year, they have some good quality covers on there.

Could i put oasis' cover of my generation by the who in here, that was pretty awesome when they performed it on Jonathan Ross.

anything you can find by the beelzebubs is awesome, they're a college a capella choir that do covers of popular songs.

their covers of "creep" (radiohead) "so whatcha want" (beastie boys)and ESPECIALLY "burning down the house" by the talking heads are quite dro.

Sugababes version was better than the original. Didn't take much to the cover of 'Orange crush', but then that song was kind of crap in the first place as well - even my mum agrees.

'Can't take my eyes off you' was by Frankie Valli (I think that's how his name is spelt, been a long time since I've listened to his stuff) and 'Feeling good' was by Nina Simone (for future reference).

I pretty much recommend you don't. I liked Death Cab waaaay more before I heard it. I don't think ol'Gibbard knows the words to be honest, so it's pretty funny really.

I secretly love it though, but don't tell my friends, they'll disown me.

I think it's on the 'You Can Play These Songs With Chords' album.

My personal favourite cover is The Shins' cover of We Will Become Silhouettes (The Postal Service). And although it's technically not relevant, not being indie and all, but Fall Out Boy did a good cover of that Ne-Yo song on Jo Whiley's live lounge on...Thursday maybe?

this is one of those conversations i have again and again but never think of one when pressed. off the top of my head:

los campesinos! - 'police story' (black flag)
mark ronson feat. daniel merriweather - 'stop me' (the smiths)
thrice - 'eleanor rigby' (the beatles)
jose gonzalez - 'heartbeats' (the knife)
emery - 'holding out for a hero' (bonnie tyler)

did anyone hear the manic street prechaers doing rihanna's umbrella? interesting. i don't think they went all out enough though, it would have been better to hear it done louder. no doubt someone somewhere has done.

EDIT: totally forgot the bronx's version of neil young's needle and the damage done.

The Nina Simone version is also a cover, it was written by Newley and Bricusse.

And about the DCFC cover of This Charming Man, I think the instrumentation and the sound of Gibbard's voice is quite good, it's just some of the really bad wrong lyrics (like crucial instead of gruesome which changes the sentiment of the whole line) which ruins it. Also, I heard they apologised for getting the words wrong.
