Which band inspired you to rock scociety and work your little fingers to the bone?!
The first band that really got me into rock was Van Halen. First song I heard was "Unchained" and it blew me away. I was then obssesed with VH for like 2 years. Now I listen to diff. things like classic rock, shred, and progressive mainly.

11-20-2005, 09:21 PM

First time i heard Master of Puppets, i was like holy **** im buyin a guitar.:headbang:

11-20-2005, 09:23 PM

11-20-2005, 09:32 PM
well, it was a combination of bands. first there was in flames, then came pink floyd, led zeppelin, and disturbed. i remember listening to down with the sickness thinking, "wow, i want a guitar." then i heard the quiet place by in flames a bit later and im like "ok, im going to start to play guitar." led and pink floyd just helped it along the way.

11-20-2005, 09:32 PM
when i heard AC/DC i was blown away by their music. i still like them, but now i've kinda eased off and starting to listen to more mellow stuff by clapton and such

11-22-2005, 03:17 PM

11-22-2005, 03:20 PM
I think it was mainly Green Day and Offspring that made me want to pick up a guitar (yes, I do know how painfully easy that stuff is) but atm I'm getting inspiration from bands like Tool, APC and Incubus.

11-23-2005, 08:30 PM
Jack Black.... ya I saw School of Rock and then wanted a guitar....

So I told my dad, he put a Rush album in, and then I immediately started saving up for one.

Kansas - yes Kansas they have a lot of hard rock.

11-28-2005, 10:43 PM
Black Sabbath

11-28-2005, 11:51 PM
METALLICA!!!!!!! They changed my life.I couldnt believe somebody could make such awesome music. The end solo in fad to black gets me everytime. My friend then sent me an MP3 of him playing fade to black and it rocked. Then i just knew it was time for me to take that next step....so i did. Decided to teach myself master of puppets after about a month....I was so ****.I still practice it everyday and it sounds way better than it did when i first started (not perfect though).Got an electric last year in November and have been playing a couple of hours everyday for a year.

When you pick up the guitar for the first time, weeks go by where you think you can never get better so you give up.If you press on then you hit a point where you cant imagine your life without the axe.

Metallica got me into it, but i also get inspired by Nirvana,Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver (mainly because of Slash),Dream Theater (Petrucci is a god),Incubus etc

I love the six string :-)

11-29-2005, 06:04 AM

RHCP got me into music and then Jack White made me want to play guitar.

11-29-2005, 01:36 PM
Without a doubt, Van Halen. I've been playing for several years now, and Eddie consistently inspires me to keep playing, even though I've listened to everyone of there albums hundreds of times.

11-29-2005, 06:58 PM
definitely System of a Down

11-29-2005, 09:10 PM
Blink 182 and Guns N' Roses inspired me. Yeah thats right...I said Blink 182. They are great and you know it.

But it was Slash who got me to play guitar. Blink got me to listen to music. I still love you blink.

12-01-2005, 10:22 AM
Listening to the beatles when i was younger made me want to play guitar. Listening to AC/DC made me want to play great rock.

Sum 41.

Completely honestly, they inspired me to pick up guitar. Yep. Sum 41.

Who'd have thunk it?

12-01-2005, 04:21 PM
- Red Hot Chilli Peppers and TRUSTcompany for starting
- Disturbed into nu-metal, Chevelle into hard rock, and Tool into prog.
- Lamb of God and Shadows Fall into metalcore
- In Flames into metal (pretty much altogether) and Nightwish into metal bands w/ female vocals (I save Arch Enemy for the female growling, don't like it though)
- Sarah McLachlan into female artists

12-01-2005, 04:50 PM
For me I have to say I wanted to play guitar back then when I was into slipknot, Korn and stuff like that. I didn't know much about music, but I did know I wanted to play guitar. Its like one night I told myself "I want a guitar". Now I'm into different types of metal and music, but that was the first time I realized I wanted to thrash out.

12-01-2005, 06:07 PM
Definitely "Hollow" from Pantera, I swear that song blows off my head every time I listen to it, I can't even put a word on it, but definitely Pantera and Metallica.

R.I.P Dime \m/

12-02-2005, 12:44 AM
I really couldnt pin it down to one band or artist. I do know that every once in a while a band i've recently picked up will inspire me to keep rockin or get me into new styles and genres. Recently I've been playing a good deal of Kinks, Alex Harvey, and the like.

12-02-2005, 01:37 AM
Limp Bizkit.

AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, and Van Halen.

Those days are long gone. Slipknot and Mudvayne got me into metal. Devildriver.

12-09-2005, 05:57 PM
Tenacious D, I've never even been to a concert of theirs and I find their music so inspiring to just get up and begin to ROCK!!, that I find myself asking the question, Are they angels? But that can't be possible because they are just men, ROCK!!!

this is a pretty hard question for me....i was raised on classic rock, and a lot of guns n roses....so probably GNR or ACDC or somethin...why does this question have to be so tricky?

JS Donnie F.
12-13-2005, 02:38 AM
GNR for me. My friend introduced them to me and I really liked the music.

12-13-2005, 02:41 PM
Nirvana inspired me. The first album i heard of them was "Unplugged in New York." Ever since then ive been rockin out!

12-13-2005, 02:57 PM

They are total badasses; they are the best at their instruments, and they write excellent songs.

12-13-2005, 03:39 PM

12-17-2005, 11:20 AM
Hendrix, I was just blown away and bought a guitar.

12-17-2005, 12:31 PM
You know, I'd like to say like, The Grateful Dead, or Frank Zappa, or Neil Young, but those are the guys that keep me rockin. The band that started it all for me was.....Pink Floyd

12-17-2005, 01:44 PM
the offspring - pay the man. i think that is one of the greatest songs i have ever heard in my life. i bought the CD when it came out and after hearing it i knew i wanted to play.

Pearl Jam

12-18-2005, 02:36 PM
Well as weak as it is, I first wanted to play guitar when I heard Blink 182. I got into that whole pop punk scene when I was younger but my inspirations to keep on improving today are people like John Frusciante and Mike Einziger and Tom Morello and As Cities Burns guitarists and Mewithoutyous guitarists.

12-19-2005, 06:10 PM
definetly for me its gotta be Led Zeppelin, Green Day, and Hedley

Incubus, Audioslave, Linkin Park, Rush, and some other completely unrelated bands like Metallica and even Dire Straits. I really first began to consider getting a guitar when I heard the song "Drive" by Incubus a few years ago, but I didn't actually get a guitar until late July of this year.

12-20-2005, 12:15 AM
THE BEATLES: They made their debut on ED SULLIVAN show-within a week

12-20-2005, 01:32 AM
The first time I heard The Offspring and Green Day, I knew I wanted to sing. (I was like 8 or 9 so don't flame me!, I'm 17 now...)
The first time I said "I wanna play guitar" was the first time I listened to "Derek and The Dominos - Layla", man, that song rocks :P haha

01-03-2006, 11:57 PM
3 doors down. im 15 and the first song i learned to play on guitar was kryptonite, (incredible song). I don't care for the direction they're going in these days, in fact i've enjoyed each of their albums less and less. But none the less, i love their first album. It's what got me into rock music.

01-04-2006, 10:04 AM
I started off learning music as a drummer a year and a half ago... I picked up learning a guitar during a 4 months vacation i had from Dec04 to Mar05... But I didnt stop there...

Evanescence, with their hard rock is why I took up guitar. I still love them today.

01-13-2006, 03:38 AM
Linkin Park, I'm ashamed to say. They were the first rock band (or nu-metal in this case) i'd really ever taken the time to listen to, and it just changed everything about music for me.

Now I'm into the likes of AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters and loads and loads more.

01-13-2006, 08:28 AM

01-19-2006, 11:29 AM
alice in chains all the way..

their music was the perfect blend of rock, metal, grunge, and even alternative kinda sounds with their later stuff.

plus they were the dark horse of the 90's along with other bands like nine inch nails.

I have a stupid theory that back in the day when Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan were kickin it with the folk sounds, Cash represented the depressive dark side and Dylan was the more kinda of energetic pop sound (although i hate to use that word with dylan and even he had really obscure and depressive lyrics too)....anyway, the beatles kinda evolved out of dylan just like the doors kind of carried the depresive sound of cash, and then from that the Beatles went on to influence everything under the sun, and the doors inspried more of the kind of alice in chains sound. Difference being, like with Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc..., the bealtes come through much stronger but with AIC and soundgarden i feel the doors influence much more.

anyway..like i said..a stupid theory which most likely fundamentally flawed.

01-19-2006, 11:30 AM
haha! i started by liking the darkness! woo go me... ah times have changed

01-21-2006, 07:22 PM

Stiff Litlle Fingers. I love the guitar in 'suspect device'!! I wanna play like that! And the guitar solo in Sonic Reducer (the song)!

01-26-2006, 06:45 AM
Basically I use to just listen to whatever was on... the day I heard "Free Bird", was the day I formed my opinions on music... and became Rock N' Roll for Life.

01-26-2006, 08:19 AM
311 inspired me to rock, first time i heard "down" i was like holy **** you can rap and rock at the same time, before them no one else did that

I'm pretty sure the Beastie Boys were doing that back in 1985, or earlier.............

01-27-2006, 11:26 PM
It was Rush since the beginning. Closer To The Heart was the first song I learned, and I worked sooo hard on that one song.

01-28-2006, 10:07 AM

After hearing Metallica's Black Album I just had to buy a guitar!
Although I listen to and play a variety of rock/metal, James and Kirk will always be my main influence! :headbang:

01-28-2006, 11:50 AM
Alice In Chains, and Pink Floyd, and a bunch of local musicians.

01-30-2006, 12:16 PM
Black Sabbath...Tony Iommi is the most under-rated guitaist ever.

01-30-2006, 01:52 PM
the first band i liked was POD but the band that inspired me to learn the bassguitar was zeppelin

02-03-2006, 10:28 PM
Sadly, and I must admit. Green Day.(And my cousins)

02-03-2006, 10:57 PM
the band that really made me want to pick up the guitar was aerosmith...joe perry and brad whitford...nirvana and kurt cobain also played a large role in inspiring me to rock

02-03-2006, 11:13 PM
I wanted 2 play drums and my mum was like, No it's too noisy, play guitar instead.
Now with 120watts of raw power she regrets it!!!
I kinda learnt for 3 years but wasn't really into ne rock stuff, than all of a sudden I heard Sweet Child 'o' Mine on the radio and I was like, Holy ****, cool!!!
Next came Nirvana, Zeppelin, Metallica and the rest, they say, is history.
I wasn't enjoying it a couple of years ago, I got a bit bored of GNR, then I saw John Frusciante play on Live at Slane and I was "Reborn".

02-03-2006, 11:14 PM
It was The Who for me. John Entwhistle is the whole reason I wanted to learn the bass. He made me realize how much cooler the bass is than any other guitar.

I just had to be able to play good riddance.
It seemed really complicated as a non player.
Little did I know!

02-07-2006, 11:18 PM
Bryan Adams.

Yes, I know, makes me look like a total softy, but that was back when I was 9. I that inspired me to love rock, then I was inspired to play by more 80's stuff (my dad introduced me to rock, and the 80's was his generation.), particularly Van Halen.

My fisrt song was Bryan Adams, Summer of 69.

As of now, I like increasingly hardcore stuff (comparing to what I used to like). I still am greatly influenced by Bryan Adams and all things 80's. Now I'm influenced by nearly all things metal besides numetal and extreme stuff, grunge, and pretty much anything that kicks butt and is bona fide rock.

02-08-2006, 12:10 AM
Rush. When Permanent Waves came out I was totally blown away by The Spirit of Radio, Free Will and Natural Science. Then Moving Pictures came out next and that cemented it for me, been playing guitar ever since, going on 25+ years now.

THe minute I heard Jimi, I was in love! Still am. Through the years of playing, alot of the mystyk (sp) of his playing is a less magic to me, but none the less. I'm still awe-inspired because he was the pioneer of so many things that are copied today, and not as well i might add. Because of the limitations of the equipment he had to use verses what we have at our fingertips today, What the hell is our excuse?!!! He came up with sounds and stuff before there was a name for what ever it was he wanted heard! That is what amazes me. Maybe our technology has surpassed our creativity? Who knows. I waited for 1983, and did not see the beautiful voodo child(only jimi fans would understand). He might have come in the form of SRV, But who knows?------ Rainy day, Dream away!

Malakian is a genius!!!! the band is so talented, Malakian produces all the albums, Odadjian directs all of the videos! They are also so politically correct.

02-16-2006, 03:18 PM
I was brain washed by kill em all by metallica at a local skatepark

02-16-2006, 03:25 PM
i cant really remember but my guitar teacher started me off on easy songs, just chord changes and i slowly worked my way up and i just tried to sound like whoever i was listening to at the time, mostly christian rock, 3 doors down and light stuff like that (i was young, ok). now i listen to anything that makes me want to play, mostly blues and ac/dc, etc.

02-17-2006, 12:40 PM
rhcp got me into rock, loads of bands made me want to play guitar, but probably people like Thrice, Killswitch, Rise Against, Bad Religion, that kind of thing...now im inspired by Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Yes, The Mars Volta, stuff like that.

02-18-2006, 04:33 PM
Well, i didn't actually say "**** I NEED TO GET A GUITAR!!" cos i got it as a crimbo present, and i didn't play it properly for about half a year, but i think probably metallica. If you ask me to play any song, it will likely be a MetallicA song.

02-21-2006, 11:13 AM

My parents bought me a Fender Squier "Starter Set" thing when I was about 12 years old, it sat in my closet until I was 14. The summer between my 8th grade and freshman year, I really got into music, and purchased a $150 Epiphone that I learned to play on. I listened to mostly acoustic EP's that some "emo" bands made. (The Early November, etc.) Jack Johnson was a HUGE influence. His guitar lines are insane. Death Cab For Cutie was a big emotional influence that inspired me to write emotional and songs with a meaning, rather than mindless screaming into a microphone.

Radiohead was one of my more complicated inspirations, since I didn't particularly like them, I just respected them helluva lot. Bright Eyes gave me my own style of music, and the Goo Goo Dolls helped me understand how to create catchy and intruiging(sp) lines. All in all, I prefer acoustic songs rather than electric ones, since I'm more of a casual listener. Acoustic songs just have that naturally casual feel.

Right now I'm into Bloc Party alot, and starting to branch out into some techno and alternative rock. Hot Hot Heat is a personal all-time favorite, and I wish I could sing like The Format's dude does. :p:

02-24-2006, 06:03 AM

04-01-2006, 02:31 PM
I was in a guitar store one day with my dad, back when I didnt play and I thought that my dad and his guitars were stupid, and I saw this live DVD of Jimi Hendrix playing at the Isle of Wight, and I sat and watched him play, and actually listened to him, and I thought it was some of the most beautiful music ever, and I had to learn to play those songs.

My dad bought me my first guitar that day.

04-01-2006, 02:37 PM
311 for me...I stold it from my uncle when I was 9 and the rest is history

04-02-2006, 02:02 AM
lol I don't really rock...

I've wanted to play guitar for years but my parents wouldn't buy me one because I wasn't having lessons (I don't deal well with music lessons hehe). Then when my brother started having lessons at his school, I used to steal his guitar and chord book and learn the basics.

Then I saw Michelle Branch on Buffy, fell in love with the song and just had to play it. Bought the chord book for The Spirit Room and just played and played and played. So it's all her fault lol.

04-02-2006, 04:38 PM
The first time I heard the intro to "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

04-03-2006, 12:48 PM
Queen!!! God dammit!! I just heard Brian May's guitar solos and wanted to be him!!! lol!!

I still listen to Queen, but have started listening to other types of rock like Bon Jovi, and metal like System Of A Down!!

04-03-2006, 05:09 PM
Well, back when I was 6 (I'm 14 now) I loved Rage Against the Machine. And then, back in 2003 (I was 11 then) I saw KISS with Aerosmith, and Gene Simmons and KISS inspired me to play bass. But then I was kinda like "I don't know. Bass is eaisier than guitar," but then I saw Mudvayne on Uranium and saw Ryan Martinie's bass playing and I was like "I wanna be like him."

05-01-2006, 06:28 AM

i stll love AIC

05-02-2006, 03:38 PM

05-19-2006, 04:34 PM

Red hot chili peppers did that in the 80s, dumbass.
Ha, ha, ha. But true.

05-21-2006, 12:07 PM
Metallica were the first metal band I ever listened to after a mate gave me the Black album, was blown away by Kirk and James' amazing solos and riffs and that's what made me want to pick up a guitar. That was 7 years ago and although I still look up to those guys, I've recently been inspired by RHCP and in particular John Frusciante, he opened my eyes to the diffrent styles in which solos and riffs can sound and be composed.

05-21-2006, 04:43 PM
john frusicante playing in the red hot chili peppers. when i heard under the bridge i was like holy crap i want to be in a rock band and be like him.

Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, RHCP! Can you say commercialist? I also adored Mother Love Bone- I know they aren't together anymore and Andrew died, but the small amount of music they made left a deep impression in me. Jeff Buckley ****ing rocked with "Eternal Life!" He is a goner too. :(

05-23-2006, 03:20 PM
