Have you ever wondered what the hardest song would be to play on the guitar? Well here is a thread that can give you some idea of what the hardest songs are to play.

Personally at this stage it has to be "Master of Puppets" from Metallica

i wouldnt say any rock or metal songs.

i would say it would be very early blues from the 20s, it requres all you fingers on you right hand for picking and the songs are so full with notes and phrases, mixing lead guitar and rhythm guitar at once.

Some acoustic blues song. I've been to several blues gigs, and the guitar work the guys play is nothing short of astounding. Except Zoot Money, I nearly died after that concert.

I had no idea such a skillful guitarist could make such shitty music. :p I couldn't get past one and a half minutes of that. If you're looking for some good shred, google video for Steve Vai, I think there's a video of him playing tender surrender.

I'm a bassist, so the hardest for me would probably be Classical Thump or some Dream Theater.

No, it IS music you uneducated prat. Anything involving an instrument can be music, especially when some pours their heart and soul into it, learning to play like Shawn takes A LOT of time and effort, and although I agree with you in that I don't really enjoy the first couple of minutes, if you would have watched more than the first few minutes, you would realise that Shawn was a very talented and knowledgable man in musical terms, hell you may have learned something, and judging from your close- minded viewpoint, you need to learn all you can.

12-03-2005, 03:02 PM
It depends what sort of player you are. If you only shred then the most basic finger picking rhythm parts will be hard, but if you only finger pick you won't be able to play fast picked rhythms, or shred solos. Playing the guitar takes a lot of different skills, the hardest song depends what skills you don't have.

jacob_mick
12-03-2005, 03:09 PM
in the words of dimebag darrell "I know a lot of players who don't have much knowledge of scales and modes and they're the ones who play from the heart"

"Shawn had psoriasis his whole life but didn't develop psoriatic arthritis until the last four or five years of his life. This did little to impair his playing once he got going, but most times he could hardly walk, and had trouble getting around. He also suffered from lung problems and obesity. He smoked constantly, and the steroids he took to combat his extremely painful disease took their toll on his health. On September 26, 2003 Shawn died in a hospital in Memphis, shortly after being told that he would have to remain on medical oxygen the rest of his life."
you are an asshole! the hardest song to ever play would be caspersen's secret fetis by mr cucumber. at one point the guitarist (marcus paus) reaches 44.6 Notes Per second.

Hell ya thats a cool song, 4 solos,2 from each guitarist. I think thats one of the things that I like from Lamb of God the most, is that there is no real lead or rythem guitarist  .

Well, some Dimebag stuff is hard, the ending parts of the Cemetery Gates solo and Domination is sick, and the way he gets those pinch harmonics, Ynwgie has some super clean fast runs and Paul Gilbert is good.
How bout these songs with loadsa effects and stuff, they would be hard to replicate.
Some guys bound to come along and say, "Oh, the hardest thing is playing from the heart."

Iruleeverything
12-03-2005, 05:30 PM
classical music requires the most skill because you have to use all your fingers on each hand and some classical players can play faster than people who play shred, so I'm gonna say that some classical song is the hardest to play.

I wouldn't be albe to say what the hardest songto play is but some that would be very hard are

Megadeth: Holy Wars... The Punishment Due
Megadeth: In My Darkest Hour
Megadeth: Set The World Afire
Metallica: Fight Fire With Fire
Metallica: Ride The Lightning
Pantera: Cementary Gates
Slayer: Angel Of Death

It's Raining Blood, and it's not too terribly hard, once you get that really thrashy riff down, you know the E....532063405320 part, its not all that hard.

All these tards naming songs by Nirvana and Blink-182: wtf? Learn to PLAY the guitar before you start learning those easy-as-**** riffs.

The hardest stuff to learn on guitar? Nobody's mentioning Lamb of God, The Mars Volta (Omar is a truly underrated guitarist), Jimi Hendrix, or CKY (I'd like to see -one person- try and play just one riff from Suddenly Tragic).

I think that the hardest song I've even attempted to play was Stevie Ray Vaughans Hendrix cover, Little Wing. Just the tone, feeling and everything. It's a fantastic song. RIP Stevie.

David Gilmour has some sick work too.

No. Melody = Interesting music. I am not interested in someone who shreds at 6nps with no emotion. It takes some skill to play that fast, but it takes much more to play like that and still make it interesting. There was NO difference from the first three minutes to the remaining time. It was a snoozefest. Heck, I was more interested in the drummer than him. His playing was SO bland. All interesting music has to have SOME kind of melody.

How can you criticize my perspective of music only if I didn't like some shredding asshole? Do you know what bands, artists and genres I like? No? Then STFU.

6nps? Kurt Cobain played faster than that. And yes, I do know what kind of music you like, you like classic rock and are a bit of an elitist. Also, the rest of the video is going to be somewhat boring, for God's sake it's an instructional video, its not an action movie.

Meh. Show me where I mentioned his technical ability, then. Remember, I said "That isn't music"? That has been the point I have arguing the whole way. Suddenly the topic has changed now? Ok.

What kind of emotion is conveyed by mindless shredding, tell me? He's playing scales up and down.

There's nothing to argue here. I don't even know what the point is you're trying to make. I was merely stating my opinion and it obviously isn't going to change, is it? Sure, you can state yours, but don't criticize my likes and dislikes if you don't have a clear knowledge of what they are.

Personally at this stage it has to be "Master of Puppets" from Metallica

Ok, so you didn't attack his technical prowess, you win. But, who are you to judge how a person conveys their emotions? If he conveys his happiness through mindless shredding, more power to him. And you haven't shown at all that it isn't music. You've just stated your mindless opinion without really backing it up. You can think what you want, I'm fine with that, I just don't agree with your opinion and have decided to combat it, thats what forums are for, but, since you seem to be done, so am I. I respect your opinion, I just don't agree with it.

dude i have been playing for a year only and i can play master of puppets that song is so easy. now baroque and roll by yngwie malmsteen was pretty hard but i eventually got it down.

Well this seems kind of odd to me. Either you are a technical genious on guitar, or else you play a couple of notes and think "hey I've got the whole song"! Master of Puppets is almost impossible to play from beginning to end after only one year. And Yngwie Malmsteen is a whole chapter for himself. I'd like to hear some recordings of what you claim to be able to play ;)

I think that if we have to develop this topic we should discuss the hardest song ever, and then narrow the topic by choosing a genre and furthermore define "hardest". Do we simply mean hard in a technical "shred" (that is for heavy metal for example) way, or do we mean emotionally hard (who puts most feeling into it)?

I'd say that overall punk music for example, is not that hard (correct me if I am wrong :)) technically, but it required something else - some feeling and will to make good punk music when it was it.

To give something to this discussion I would say we could discuss the hardest song following one of these criteria [this is my suggestions]:

Spanish - Technical Fingerwork [Don't know it that well, but I would say it must be some Paco De Lucia stuff]
Neoclassical - Technical combined with melody (can't really seperate this for neoclassical I think) [Yngwie Malmsteen - Beethoven's 5th, Steve Vai - Blue Powder (and others)]
Heavy Metal - Technical solowork (aka shredding) [Racer X / Paul Gilbert - Technical Difficulties, Pantera / Dimebag Darrell - Cowboys From Hell (and a lot others)]
Heavy Metal - Melodic solowork with good feeling [Ozzy Osbourne / Randy Rhoads - Mr. Crowley, Metallica / Kirk Hammett - One]
Jazz - Chord progressions, etc. [I'm not into jazz... So I'll pass on the word]
Punk - Feeling (hard to describe) [Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen (the grandmother of punk), there's more - simply can't remember the name :(]

Please discuss my ideas.. And add more genres and musicians if you like :) Hope this will get it further.

True. Iv'e been playing for about 4 years, and I still can't take the strain of it on my arm. I feel like crying like a little girl everytime I play it.

Either you are a technical genious on guitar, or else you play a couple of notes and think "hey I've got the whole song"!

I know someone like that. I have to tell him everyting he plays is wrong, and teach it him myself.

Slowed down, that Shawn Layne stuff sounds like crap.

And if you speed up Adagio for strings by Samuel Barber it would sound like crap as well. What's your point?
And at the beginning of the video, Shawn likes the strange sound of it. It isnt random crap played as fast as possible, if you want to hear that, listen to "Caspersens Secret Fetish" by Marcus Paus.

Well, even if that was the case, Beethoven is still not that hard to play on guitar, at least not speed-wise. He was never really big on speed.

Anyways, I'm kind of disappointed that people take speed as the overwhelming aspect that determines how much skills a guitar player has.

apocalypse13

Meh, speed isn't huge for me, it's more technicalities for me. Although Shawn Lane just blows me away, but he's also very technical too. Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Buckethead, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Ron Thal, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani and Micheal Angelo Batio pwn major ass, and don't focus on speed exclusively. Jazz standards are THE HARDEST things ever.

Well, even if that was the case, Beethoven is still not that hard to play on guitar, at least not speed-wise. He was never really big on speed.

Anyways, I'm kind of disappointed that people take speed as the overwhelming aspect that determines how much skills a guitar player has.

Im not going on just with speed, but Shawn's phrasing, vibrato, etc., are all amazing, and in the Tarrega piece, its just rather hard to tremelo pick with your fingers, especially on a nylon string.

Shawn lane was an amazing guitarist! that is not him let lose, Shawn was once at a NAMM show with vinnie moore, yingwie Malmsteen, steve vai and some other people i dont remember. They were all on stage and soloing and when it came to be shawn's turn to solo, well lets put it this way steve vai quit playing his guitar and grabed a video camera from somewhere to record him in action.
When shawn was 14 he was playing live with blue oak arkansass and out played Ted nuggent on stage! I Know these stories to be true because i live in memphis and shawn's former guitar Tech Is my guitar teacher! so quit shawne bashing!
p.s. i am a huge classic rock and blues fan and i definately hear the emotion when shawn played if you dont belive me then listen to his cover of "all along the watchtower"!

he may be really good and do almost impossible stuff technique-wise

but to me that was quite BORING,
its not captivating (well, thats my opinion, but im sure there are many people who feel the same and i never said he is a bad guitarist, i respect his ability)

you dont need something complicated and extremely technically challenging to sound good.

It depends what sort of player you are. If you only shred then the most basic finger picking rhythm parts will be hard, but if you only finger pick you won't be able to play fast picked rhythms, or shred solos. Playing the guitar takes a lot of different skills, the hardest song depends what skills you don't have.

I think that is the true answer to the hardest song to play. It varies from musician to musician.

PopNFresh07
03-11-2007, 04:40 PM
^ Then the hardest song to play is something that incorporates all aspects and skills of playing guitar into one song.

Bluesy Jazz Shred with a crazy acoustic finger picked rhythm.

...Clearly the answer is American Idiot.

...Sorry. :(

I am still a total noob, but based on sound, I would say some Steve Vai; like For the Love of God.

EDIT:: Or some SRV stuff, Little Wing/Voodoo Chile(cover) and I know it's short but Scuttlebuttin' sounds hard.

And Dragonforce is good, but they're sort of a show-offy 'look at me!' kind of band. Having said that, they play absolutely amazingly.

hammetfan86

hardest song to play on guitar? well i think it depends on ur style, a blues player probably wont be able to shred heavy metal solos the same way a metalhead cant keep a blues rythm, but for me, i play a bit of everything and i think that John Frusciante is a really good guitarist and some stuff he does is really hard, cant think of any particular song tho

while i agree wholeheartedly that it would be one of the most difficult things to play on guitar, i hope you're joking about your second paragraph... i'm pretty sure Beethoven didn't shred up an Ibanez when composing songs.

sorry but it is. the moonlight sonata was written in 1801 by Beethoven, and is one of his most famous pieces. the third movement is still considered one of the most technically challenging and impressive pieces of piano music to date (description sort of adapted from Wikipedia)

I think it's strange that people suggest songs from bands such as metallica or pantera as the hardest ones to play. They're not. I can play every single pantera song and every single metallica song without any problems, and im not a great guitarist.
If you are looking for hard music, i would suggest bands such as Symphony X or maybe Dream Theater. A lot of Racer X songs are hard to. And i don't mean "technical difficulties, as it's one of their easier instrumentals. Scarified, Scit scat wah or Frenzy are way harder to play.

Pretty much anything Fredrick Thordendal has played on. Very Allan Holdsworth-esque.

The solo in New Millenium Cyanide Christ is a good example. Try playing that cleanly with using anything to mute your strings.
