voodoo child, purple haze, and all along the watchtower are also pretty overrated. If you want to hear a Jimi Hendrix solo that is actually good, listen to Bold as Love.

alive - pearl jam or
take the power back - RATM
Alive doesn't have that great of a guitar solo...
But I agree 100% on Take the Power back, it's the best Rage song in my opinoin..
Mine are...
"Grind" by Alice in Chains
"Know your Enemy" by Rage Against the Machine
"In 'N' Out of Grace" by Mudhoney (Just because I like the two guitars harmonizing in it...It isn't really a good solo at all, mainly because Mark Arm and Steve Turner aren't very good guitarists)

Under A Glass Moon - Dream Theater

I really like the solo in Seize the Day by Avenged Sevenfold (not the outro solo)

I also like Stairway to Heaven, the electric solo on Master of Puppets after the acoustic bridge, and lately although I dont like the band I like the solo on Anthem by Trivium.

Um, I'll go for the obvious David Gilmour solos

Time
Comfortably Numb
Shine on you crazy diamond...
...list goes on and on, greatest guitarist ever (imo)

some other solos I really love are the solos on metallica's orion, my personal favourite metal song ever.

Some Machine Head solos on the Blackening are amazing, especially Halo and Aesthetics of Hate.

blah, you get the point, but david gilmour undoubtedly has the best guitar solos. I've actually cried listening to some of his solos, that just shows you the emotion he puts into them( no emo )

Queen/Brian May/Bohemiem Rhapsody... a lot otf thought put into the solos in that song.
Deep Purple/Rithcie Blackmore/Lazy...great phrasing and articulation for standard blues scales
Led Zeppelin/Jimmy Page...the song remains the same...all the guitar parts are so creative and stylized.
Beatles/McCarntey, Lennon, Harrison. The End off Abbey Road, the 3 exchange solos on this tune, different, exciting and so appropriate. genius.
Cream/Clapton...White Room..can't fight it... great wah Wah solo
Hendrix...All Along the Watch Tower. Great tone and feel, another great solso on a strat through marshall, what a combo
Pink Floyd/Dave Gilmour/Dark Side of the Moon...the whole thing set a new standard, love the echo machine (Roland?) and tone. first guitar player to "soar"; Beautiful and perfect.
Allman Brother/Duane Allman/Ain't My Cross to Bare...old school, Les Paul and Marshall bare bones tone. gotta love it.
these solos are not in any particular order, I just like them.

Thrice - T&C ... possibly one of their only songs with a huge guitar solo but damn it's sex!! I wish it had better production though.

A7X - MIA... Why are they so underrated amongst 'true' metalheads? Their songs are a teensy bit cheesy but they do it REALLY well especially the guitar solos.

Coheed - Velourium Camper 1 - The guitar solo in the first part is simple yet awesome. Especially when Claudio slips in and says "coo coo kchoo" like I am the Walrus.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop - I'm a sucker for simple solos that just kill you

My Chemical Romance - Dead! - one of the most happy-lets-party-fun solos I've ever heard

Damn, this was a hard one to try and decide on but for now I'm gonna go with the solo in "Into the Night" by Ace Frehley (Frehley's Comet). He's far from the best technical player out there, but talk about someone who has an ear for the right notes at the right time and just an amazing feel.

"Jessica - The Allman Brothers Band: Duane and Dickie-****ing geniuses"

No offense, man, but that's after Duane's death. Still classic.

For me, it's definitely a pick from "At Fillmore East" (deluxe edition), so pick between-

Done Somebody Wrong
Stormy Monday (yeah, yeah, I know... but seriously, it's totally perfect eat-your-heart out guitar)
Drunken Hearted Boy

For the uninitiated, listen to this album and discover that playing a flurry of notes for 40 seconds isn't mastering guitar. These boys knew how to play from the heart. (it just so happens, when the time is right, they can play faster than any metal guitar player, too- Duane's peaks on In Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Whipping Post are proof of this claim.

Well, i got a few solos, many of which have probably been mentioned...

Freebird (come on now, everyone loves it, don't deny it!)
Pink Floyd, Wish you were here (intro solo and actual solo, so fun to listen to and play)
Dream Theater, Under a glass moon (just, pure...awesome...)
Cream/Clapton, White Room (once again, awesome!)

Countless others of course, to many great solos to really decide...

The whole ending/2nd half of Metallica's "My Friend of Misery" is just the most amazing, raw, and just plain awesome solo. Being a rhythm guitarist, I don't solo much and focus instead on riffs, but there are several guitar solos that are just plain ear-candy and that I took the time to learn.

-almost every Jerry Cantrell guitar solo with Alice in Chains, notably in Love Hate Love, Them Bones, We Die Young, Man in the Box, Would?, and Acid Bubble. That guy is the perfect guitarist.

-Alive (Pearl Jam): I do enjoy a good blues-rooted solo from time to time, 'specially because my band writes Deftones/A Perfect Circle/Chevelle-esque music

-The Unforgiven (Metallica): Definitely one of the most passionate guitar solos in existence. Yeah, Kirk Hammett is overrated, but he's got his shining moments.

-Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden): Gives me an excuse to have a wah pedal :D

Haha probably In the fire off the roadrunner united album - its really fast and technical, but at the same time really melodic. I could listen to that solo on repeat for hours, its amazing,

Also im not sure about a particular song, but The Living End have some really good solos - Chris Cheney is an excellent guitarist, and watching him play live is an experience.

As a rhythm guitarist I'm not much of a solo junkie, but I do learn the occasional solo from time to time. There are a bunch of Alice in Chains solos that I love, but I think 'Love Hate Love' and 'Would?' take the cake for my favorites. 'The Unforgiven' by Metallica is up there as well. Currently though, my favorite is probably 'Fade Into (The Ocean)' by 10 Years.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is a great one. Doubling the vocal line is absolutely perfect. Kurt had lots of great solos.

But for grunge rock solos, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden is king.

ZomBrad
02-11-2011, 12:14 AM
I'm gonna have to concur with iwannabesedated. You're not gonna hear millions of notes per second with Cobain, but you can tell he put his entire heart and soul into the solos. He's the music world's version of the Little Choo-choo that could.....or whatever that story was called.

I also like the solos in Metallica's Until it Sleeps (save the hate for load :P), and in the Cranberries' Zombie.

Along with Neil Young's noisy solos in Hey Hey My My, and Keep on Rockin in the Free World.
