Amazing piece of work - one of the bands that brought me onto the scene. One thing I feel about them is because of their unusual structure methods - you think the song is going to end any minute but it's only a minute in. Anyone find that or simular?

I bought Miss Machine because I heard a lot of stuff about em, and i must say they're damn good, sometimes a little chaotic, but good nonetheless. Plus, the DVD that comes with it...live shows are sweet.

I really really really want to see them. Everyone says that they are insane live, using fire and throwing drum symbols around. I can't believe I was busy the day they came with Horse the Band and BTBAM. That woulda been one helluva show.

Dillinger really revolutionized the whole hardcore scene.

I remember back in the day when they toured with The Locust. It was the most ****ing craziest show ive ever seen.

I picked up Miss Machine today... wow, what a mindfuck of an album. I had only heard Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants before, so needless to say, I didn't think it would sound much like this. It's chaotic as hell, and the tempo changes are giving me a headache, but it's certainly a lesson in technical complexity and incredible song structure, and fun to figure out as well.

Gomorrah
02-28-2006, 09:58 PM
I love DEP, but when every review of them says that they are a mix of jazz, metal, etc, they are lying. There is absolutely no jazz in the music of Dillinger Escape Plan.

LedZeppelin
02-28-2006, 10:00 PM
^ Yes, there is. It's subtle, but definitely there. Listen to some of the background chords in their songs, especially Setting Fire. The time signature changes are very jazz-like as well, and the drums of course are. A large part of the dissonance in chaotic music like DEP comes from jazz- even the most placid major 7th chord has some dissonance to it, you just don't hear it when the chord is together. What DEP have done is broken these dissonant chords apart and made them into riffs.

43% Burnt is a ****ing amazing song. I finished learning it the other day and man...I never realized just from listening to it how complex it is. The time signature changes and the sweep picking...I mean damn....

StuartR
03-07-2006, 06:23 PM
Theres alot of Jazz in old DEP, never heard the new stuff.

Firstly, the chord..........**** it between Mullet burden and 43% Burnt(thats the only ones I know the tab to) theres about 10 parts i can think of influenced by Jazz, the chords straight after the dischords at the start of Mullet, the next riff there is the
-----------5
-----------5
-----------5
-----------4
0 2 3 0
0 2 3 0

that 4 5 chord is jazzed up, then theres the chord solo with the single notes in 43%

It's free jazz they're associated with.

Not so much on Miss Machine though.

Well, time to dig up an old thread!

Anyways, I have...mixed feelings about DEP. At times, I'll think "the jazziness and odd-time sigs are pretty neat" and other times, I say "Ugh, the hxc vocals are giving me a headache." Hah. So, maybe I'll just have to give them more of a listen. Anyone else feel this way sometimes?

LedZeppelin
01-24-2007, 08:49 PM
They aren't hardcore vocals at all really. Not that that invalidates your opinion, but I just thought I should point it out.

September 07 for the new album, baby! I am so pumped.

I agree. I find their music to be ingenious really, the structures, changes and riffs are all very calculated but free at the same time. Definitely one, if not the most talented band in math/tech core today. Really looking forward to their new CD. Don't get enough credit.

I have Calculating Infinity, Irony is a Dead Scene, and Miss Machine and love all of them. Everything I've heard by them has taken a couple listens to take it all in due to how chaotic it is, but once that happens it isn't hard to see the awesomeness that is there.

So I just picked up Ire Works (yes, in CD form rather than download.)

My copy has an all black CD with a red strip across that says "Archival Data Disc" and a white rectangle marked "Username," as well as a "data sheet" that says "To be carried on person at all times, present at the Ire Works checkpoints."

To anyone else who actually bought the CD: Is this shit on yours? Or is mine a copy that was supposed to stay at the factory, that got shipped out accidentally?

Ive had time for a few listens through of Ire Works, and I think its pretty good. Greg really shines through. Its different and not every track is as strong as on Miss Machine but alot of the tracks are pretty cool. The choruses are a bit more poppy and anthemic but it makes for alot smoother listen I think. Its different, Im gonna have to wait on it for a while, see if I like the change in attitude their music seems to have taken.

THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN - "Miss Machine": 67,000
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN - "Irony Is A Dead Scene" (EP) - 46,000
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN - "Calculating Infinity": 69,000

And Ire Works has shifted 6,900 copies in its first week, miss machine sold 11,300 in first week

Interesting to see how well an experimental band can do.

Ire Works is a lot less guitar orientated than Miss Machine. Nonetheless It's still an intense and extremely creative album. Sick on Sunday is a prime example of some trippy shit. But Horse Hunter is a current favourite.

Holy ****.

Greg gave me the mic 4 times and put his face right next to mine for us to both do one of the "you're being a liar"'s. So good. I chilled with them afterwards and they were way way cool dudes. My buddy asked him about his beefy structure and he was like "haha shut the **** up man." He tried to play it off like it was genetics. He said he doesn't even train that much but he's jsut really short so what he does do looks like a lot more than it is.

Yes sir, it was at the Blue Note! I live in Columbia so I was really pumped because we don't get a lot of stuff here.

Genghis Tron was perfect! They played a few new songs. My only complaint was that they weren't loud enough, but the Blue Note ****s sound up every time. Greg's vocals weren't loud enough either, and ALOL's vocals were WAY too high.

I had never heard A Life Once Lost before but they were pretty intense live. I would never listen to their album but they were a whole lot of fun. That tour is really great if you guys get a chance to see it in the next couple of weeks; DO!

Parkway Drive - broke down in SC, so they weren't there

Every Time I Die - don't like them on CD, but they played a great show, and I recognized some of the songs. Best sound of any band there.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Holy ****, these dudes are ****ing crazy. Took about 15 minutes for them to set up, maybe 20, which pissed me off, but whatever, worth the wait. Greg was climbing on top of ****, jumping down, basically going insane. Ben threw himself into the crowd and so did the new guitarist, while Liam and Gil (of course) were just chillin' in the back. Gil's kit sounded incredible, like the bass drum was inside of you. For the last song, Ben and the other guy climbed up onto the huge monitors beside the stage and threw down. The new guy was throwing his guitar all over the place. Light show was also crazy awesome.

Set:

Fix Your Face

Just got back from seeing them in Leeds last night. Holy cow, I thought I was going to die so many times! Greg was jumping on every one and every thing and at one point the sound guys had to run to stop a speaker stack from falling on top of the crowd.

One guy ran onto stage to stage dive, and got his leg caught in Ben's guitar lead. He dives off the stage, and Ben gets flung into the crowd with his guitar. There were two small girls on the front row next to me and they were getting knocked around so much.

I don't know if you already went or what, but don't be scared.

I was afraid as tits when I saw them because I made sure I was front and center then realized that Greg could blow me away just by looking at me. Like, I was scared my face would be ripped off or I'd get a steel toe to the head but he wasn't like that at all. After the show I chilled with him for a little bit and he's one of the nicest most humble dudes you'll ever talk to.

Greg is now the second oldest member of the band that's still playing.

They played on Conan.
Lead Vox stood on Conan's desk,
and Conan had glow sticks.

Fantastic

that video was a hundred thousand times less cooler than i thought it was gonna be. i was ready. i was like "MATHCORE ON CONAN YA!".I was so ready for 43% on conan. Big dissapointment. song was not good. The only cool part was when the guy screamed into his pickups, because thats just freakin awesome.

They probably had established beforehand that they wouldn't play something like 43%; do you think Conan or the network for that matter would openly let them play that on the air? I thought it was good, if not an inaccurate showcase of the Dillinger Escape Plan. But then again, one song is never an accurate showcase of them, because they do so much different stuff.

I think that was around the time that BTBAM released Colors that they did that tour...BTBAM and Dillinger are still together though right now touring with Meshuggah in Europe

I know Dillinger is coming to Toronto as a part of Wakestock, but that's the only touring I know of from them that's going to hit Canada.

I can't help but laugh at how tons of hardcore bands that are usually associated with big tough ****ers are starting to wear tight jeans. They look ridiculous on Greg :haha

Anyway, those photos are rad.

With BTBAM? Damn, that'd suck. The DEP, BTBAM and HORSE the Band show would have been sooo good. I missed the HORSE the Band Australia show without realising it was on. I saw a poster at a different concert the night it was on. I was spewin'.
