Simple question, what do you guys think is the most original band that you've heard (most original sound or style)

I'd say 'HORSE the band' is the weirdest combination of stuff, an indie band including screamo/metal with keyboards that sound like videogames

their genre is 'nintendocore'

U2 had a pretty unique sound and style for the time they came, constantly breaking new ground. But nowadays I would have to say Yeah Yeah Yeahs is the most original in style and sound, you can't say "Yeah Yeah Yeahs sound like this, Yeah Yeah Yeahs sound like that..." because it is simply impossible.

Coheed (they are a prog-punk band, need i saw more?)

Mars Volta (Insanity and Genius in equal measure, not a note out of place)

Death in Vegas (Not that good but very original)

Yes (The most random prog band ive come across)

Nitin Sawnhey (a bit like moby but then again nothing like him)

Bedoiun Soundclash (Reggae with punk roots, although i dont know much about reggae so i could be wrong)

Forward Russia (Live ive never seen anyone as crazy but brilliant as them)

The Arcade Fire (Speechless, the epitome of perfection)

Pixies (random but live they are untouchable)

Muse (lots of copy-cat bands but nothing comes close to the sounds they've created)

interesting choice, especially from stlye point of veiw the amount of fashionistas who are just carbon copies of karen o is ridiculous.

Anyways on the subject at hand, i'd probably say kid carpet. I'm tempted to say 65 days of static as well but for some reason i'm thinking i shouldnt.

Coheed and Cambria (punk/emo with progressive? AMAZING!!)
Weezer - (they're nerds, quirky and random)
Elvis - (the one who started it all so he was probably very unique back in the day)

I don't think I've heard anyone that sounds like The Beatles. They were just so...unique. Sure, people have been ripping them off for years, but no one can really come close to that mix of rock n' roll, psychedelia, and poetic lyrics that they perfected in their later years.

And another band would be Queen; can't say I'm a fan, but no one sounds like Queen. It's that simple.

I can say with 100% confidence that Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are more original than most anything mentioned in here. Victor Wooten on bass. Future Man, on a weird drummy thingy. Bela Fleck on Electric Banjo. Alto, Tenor, and Bari sax, Bassoon players. Steel drums. And some Asian guy who can sing 3 notes at once. See if you can find anything like it (waits to eat words).

Nobody has said Rage Against the Machine yet so I'll go with them

haha.. actually like 5 people have said them...

I'm still in shock some people put in MCR..

Red Hot Chili Peppers since they can play just about anything..
Rage Against The Machine... nobody sounds like them.
System Of A Down.. they have their own unique sound.
Soundgarden.. very original, few bands use that many different tunings
The Ramones.. just because they were pretty much the first punk band.
Hendrix.. just gotta give it up to Jimi.
Primus.. nobody plays like Claypool, plus their verses are pretty much solo's.. don't see that very often.

I excluded the obvious choices that I don't really listen to that much like The Mars Volta and Radiohead. I want to give honorable mention to Elvis Costello though, he's had a lot of different sounds and sounds great throughout them all.

I haven't heard a band yet that sounded quite like Joy Division.

That goes for Mindless Self Indulgence too.

king_harvest88
10-22-2006, 09:45 AM
ok, these have probably already been said:

Frank Zappa - just when you think you've got him pegged, bang, something completely different.

gong - no one sounds like gong, the weird vocals, and a 'prog-rock' band (i hate that term) that embraced punk.

Dave Brubeck quartet - broke the bounderies for what could be done in jazz, time out was the first popular jazz album to deal extensivley with odd time signatures, and Joe Morello is godly.

The band - they may not seem overly original now that thousands of bands have ripped em off, but they came around at a time where music was getting heavier and more psychedelic and just played a unique blend of roots music, mixing most every form of popular american music into one.

Meat puppets - one of the first bands to play 'punk fusion' mixing punk with other genres, certainly the first band to mix punk with country and psychedelia, those genres were practically polar-opposites.

incockgnito
10-24-2006, 01:27 PM
IMHO most original band is Wolfmother - not because they can steal LZ and BS riffs like no other people on the world, but because they say all over the world that they don't know who a f*** Tony Iommi is, they don't listen to Led Zeppelin and heard Black Sabbath only few times (and only the stuff from "Best of" album). I just love these guys! And the frontman has the most oryginal gay haircut of all times!

Tool- Have yet to hear a band come close in terms of the combo of guitar, drumming, vocals, and lyrics. My #1 pick.

Creedance Clearwater

Sade

Bjork- Yes, you heard me. May not have a guitar or be a band, but you get the point.

Cocteau Twins- Look em up

Maybe Rage Against the Machine, but they are not really original anymore because too many bands copy off them like Linkin Park and can't come close to their sound.

Why is everybody saying Red Hot Chili Peppers? I don't find them that original. They weren't the first or the best to do the funk-rock mix. Jimi Hendrix and Prince did it before, and I always liked Faith No More and Jane's Addiction more. *prepares for flames*

Also, my vote probably goes to the Beatles (for independent songwriting, electronic experimentation and Eastern instruments), the Who (for Marshall stacks, power chords and rock operas), Jimi Hendrix (for revolutionizing guitar), Frank Zappa (not a huge fan, but it's so out there) and David Bowie (for constantly innovating and reinventing himself).

Mars Volta

Radiohead- every album is different from the other.

Though it was only for one album, the band Miles Davis assembled for In A Silent Way is the most original I've heard. The music on that album is it's own genre which no one has been able to imitate before or since. Some honorable mentions include:
