Who started doing this first, was it that Roger Fisher dude from Heart, or Jimmy Page? No matter who, I still think Pagey did it better.

Well Heart started in '76 and Page first did it on their debut on the track Dazed And Confused which was in '68.

And Page picked it up in a studio even before then IIRC...

Beware, the rosin from your bow will destroy your pick-ups. Don't do this too much unless you've got the cash to get some new pick-ups.

Check out Sigur Ros for a band that does a lot of bow/guitar work. Beats me how they get that sound, but some of them are downright heartbreaking.

I heard that Nigel Tuffnel gave Jimmy the idea when Nigel showed him how he rubbed his Stradivarius against the strings of his Les Paul.

Jimmy, of course, thought that it may sound much better if he used a bow instead of the violin itself.

Not really! I can't back that up!

here we go....

it was originally done by eddie phillips of the creation, who was absent from a tour in 68 and was being filled it by ronnie wood who had to adapt the approach for the crowd.... ronnie was friends with jimmy n showed him how to do it

well the strings on a guitar isnt leveled in different degrees on the bridge like the violen. So if you use a bow on a guitar, your basically playing all six strings and will sound terrible.

Ok being an experienced violinist/guitar maniac I g2 agree with jayr123. The rossin is going to ruin your pickups. So i suggest not trying anything freaky like page for a while

If you had a crapload of money or are very handy it might be fun to try to have the strings at different levels, like a violin, so you could play it that way. I'm guessing you'd need different strings too, though.

Page was the first one to popularize it. I'm sure though that others probably thought of it before him.

For the record, heart does not suck, at all. At least early heart anyway. Actually they are amazing. You guys arent listening to the right music from them. Their first album dreamboat annie is ridiculous, and they were awesome live.

As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter who did it first. It's an atrocity.

Vinnie Vincent (1982-83) in KISS did a crap version of the bow. He blew chunks anyways when I saw then on the Lick It Up Tour and his violin bow solo was more screeching that anything else.

You guys, I started it back in '61.
Just kidding, I think it was Page.

Eddie Phillips showed Page the trick when they were both working on a record, I think. On a side note, The Creation effing rock.

Page was doing it with the Yardbirds. So he was doing it way before Heart was around but since he wasn't the first, it doesn't matter eh.

It's really hard, but don't think it will ruin your pick-ups. You can just get them out and clean them.

Most likely Page, but I'm not sure.
