Dream Theater... the singer wrote a few songs, but not alot at all. Most are done by the drummer and guitarist, and many older songs were from the keyboardist.

Iron Maiden. The bassist, Steve Harris, writes almost everything. On a 10 song album he'll have sole writing credits on 8 or so songs, and the others are usually him and another band member.

AC/DC. I know after Bon Scott died, Angus and Malcolm wrote most of the music.

Oh well.......The Who. It was Pete who wrote most of the lyrics. I would die to get tickets to their tour.

God Forbid's singer doesn't do very much in the song writing process, he just sings whatever lyrics are written for him.

Fall Out Boy's bass player writes most the songs if I'm not mistaken.

off topic but i recall papa roach's bass player writing a lot of the guitar parts as well as bass on their albums. seemed a bit unusual to me

Yeah, usually Labrie will have one song with a writing credit and sometimes Myung will get one, but that's usually the limit per album from those 2.....I don't think I've ever seen a song with Rudess credited though.

Alter Bridge. Most songs on their album are written by the guitarist, Mark Tremonti.

i would say slayer but im not so sure. mostly hanneman and king, their guitarists, write the lyrics. Tom doesn't write lyrics that much or at all.

in Queen everone contributed their own songs at some point (though mainly it was either by Mercury or by May)

in The Who Pete Townshend wrote most of the stuff

in Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page sometimes wrote things (or they ripped of stuff from blues artists and then later got sued)...most things are credited Page/Plant though

the Beatles.....err, everyone did a bit of everything if that counts

Rush. Their drummer, Neil Peart, wrote almost all of their Lyrics.
thats the first that came to my mind.

also Pink Floyd.

when syd barret was in the band he wrote all the lyrics, but that was for one album. the other albums most of the stuff was written by Roger Waters who played bass. he did sing in a few songs, but david gilmour is the main singer.

Black Star

Actually most of Pink Floyd's stuff was written by both Waters and Gilmour. On Animals+The Wall, Roger Waters started becoming a control freak. And both Waters and Gilmour are considered Vocals for Pink Floyd. So really, the singer did write the lyrics for Pink Floyd.

Mark Tremonti should just be a one man band. He rocks, but Alter Bridge and Creed are the "meh".

also if you consider lyrics, elton john's are written by bernie taupin, and a lot of grateful dead lyrics were written by Robert Hunter

not true, brian johnson wrote a lot of the material after bon scott's death (RIP) him and the young brothers shared the responsibility, it wasn't untill the present days that he's faded out his lyric writing. it is rumored on the next album though that he' will start writing again.

Sack face, Elvis wrote alot of his stuff. I'm sure that alot of singers don't write the music. Correct me if I'm worng, but I don't think that Ozzy wrote much of their stuff.

milly vanilly?

That was messed up when their song kept repeating itself when they were on stage, but it's their own fault they can't sing.

The Who is probably the best example. Pete Townshend wrote nearly all their songs.

AC/DC could be an example too, for the past 3 albums Angus and Malcolm wrote all the lyrics.

i would say slayer but im not so sure. mostly hanneman and king, their guitarists, write the lyrics. Tom doesn't write lyrics that much or at all.

The first album Show No Mercy Jeff and Kerry wrote everything. But now Tom has more to do with the creative process.

Oh yeah in Dimmu Borgir their guitarist Silenoz writes most of it along with Mustis I believe. Shagrath has little to do with the lyrical production.

frippogenics

Early King Crimson was usually Fripp's compositions with a lyricist they hired.

Frank Zappa also rarely sang on early Mothers Of Invention and he wrote everything.

as for Elvis---sorry, YayForPie----but the King never wrote any lyrics. his name doesappear on some credits as a cowriter, but that was standard in many of the contracts that the Colonel put forth. ie"if you my boy to record your song, he gets half of the publishing and writing credits". as most people found out, it was usually more beneficial to get half of the royalties if Elvis recorded your song than all of them if recored by someone else.

ramones, dee dee wrote almost all the songs on the albums he was on, and stil a few afterwards, also, tommy credits himself with writing 90% of blitzkreig bop, and a few others, but i dunno. joey and johny usually added to dee dees songs, but it was still all his work lyrically. and yeah, i think elvis co wrote a few songs, but not al of them, but then again, he was the one who sang them, and gave them there character, so you have to credit him for the songs someway

Mach_Baron

elvis never wrote a song. do some research and read a few books.

rock on!
01-30-2006, 10:59 PM
i'm pretty sure Pink Floyd's lyrics were written by Roger Waters after the dissmissal of Syd. Roger was the bass player and did do a few vocals but most were done by the guitarist, David Gilmour

Wrong.

For the first 3 albums it was pretty much all Steve, but from Piece of Mind there were alot of Smith/Dickinson writing credits, so Bruce Dickinson did write alot, for the Blaze Era, Blaze Bayley wrote alot of songs with Janick.

Black Flag. Greg Ginn wrote most of the songs, i think he had help from a few people along the way, but he was their guitarist.

you're wrong.

Andy wrote a big part of the lyrics but Michael also had a part in the songwriting. Especially the new albums have a lot of Mike's lyrics
