Anyone know any good christian bands? Anyone been surprised to find out a band is Christian? List the ones you know. At the moment, the only ones i can think up are
As I Lay Dying (which i was surprised to find out) and Switchfoot.

There's a cool band called RGA (recommended Godly allowance). They've just brought out their debut disc. Lots of guitar, especially acoustic. Also use cello. Their drummer also rocks.

Check them out @ http://www.isound.com/music/recommended_godly_allowance/ Give them a listen. I think you'll dig them.

More chilled music. Not as heavy as 12 Stone by a long way. But still really good.

Cheers

Hmmm... I think you're right. I'm a christian, but I don't listen to much Christian music because, frankly, most of it isn't very good. I mean, the stuff I write is more then chords and sounds good (IMO of course... I'm a tad biased...) and the lyrics aren't specifically about God, but some are inspired by God, and they all have Christian themes to it and stuff, but I'd hate to sing, "God is so great! Jesus is my best friend! Yeah!" It just comes off to me as unintelligent and poorly thought out.

I'd love Christian bands to start thinking about their lyrics more, and christians dont HAVE to sing about God, its ok to vary it up some.

have you heard of the christian death metal band . I it was something like mortification. Another band is Styper, once agin something like that. I hat to say this but if bands like delirous did not proclaim that they were christian then they would be more mainstream. It is just that people see the words christian rock and avoid at all costs. I am not religous just to clarify just a humble soul pointing out an injustice. In saying this i realise delrious are strangly quite popular evnthough there music is not played on the radio or on music tv.

go there and look in their album review section, these people don't rate them on how Godly their songs are, but how truly skilled these people are at making music, writing intellegable lyrics, and how good they actually are.

Being a Christian, I will say I'm embarrassed by most "Christian music" out there. My mindset when listening to music isn't "Christian or non-Christian", but rather "good music or poor music".

As far as Christians trying to glorify God through their music goes, of course that's an important part, but it's not all about religious content, it's more about quality. However true or good the message may be, if a Christian band sucks, I'm not going to listen to them.

The few Christian artists I listen to are Sufjan Stevens, Pedro the Lion, the Innocence Mission, and Johnny Cash (if you'd qualify him as "Christian")

To anyone who thinks Creed is/was a christian you know nothing of this band. Creed has never been christian. Scott Stapp was raised in a christian home and was struggling with his faith severly while with creed. The reason the music "sounded" christian is because of that influence. The bane never admited to being christian ... ever. They got labeled that by christians. the sam thing happened to U2.

don't believe me read the article that stapp gave to christianity today. here's the addy; http://www.christianitytoday.com/music/interviews/2004/scottstapp-0804.html
stapp says explicitly and I quote "Creed wasn't a Christian band" in the interview. All i've heard thus far are assumptions and bickering about this issue. well read the article. It's pretty clear. just scroll down to the part where they (the mag) asks about somehting he reportedly said on the creed website if you don't want to read the whole article.

I am not against the idea of a Christian band, but every band that I heard that openly proclaimed themselves as Christian, has always been inferior against their equivalents that weren't with a religious label. It's like they're always there with a statement "hey look we can rock just as hard as Satan". I don't care whether you can or not. If your music sucks, then I won't listen to you whether you are a satanic or christian or bum**** or what. It just bores me, christian music. But feel more than welcome to prove me wrong and to show me a christian band that plays good music. Christian in a sense that their lyrics and general band direction are intended to state their beliefs and spread their word of God to their audience.

Dude, that's just ignorant. While there are a lot of bands like that, the same could be pretty much said about mainstream music. All they do is play chords and sing about love. But the fact is that there is a lot of great music outside of the Christian mainstream, just like secular music.

I can't really add anything to the lists that have already been said. Blindside, Underoath, and As I Lay Dying are all pretty sweet tho. And whoever said Thrice, I don't think so, the frontman is a christian but I don't think the rest of the band is, and only a few songs could really be classed as remotely close to Christian.

The bane never admited to being christian ... ever. They got labeled that by christians.

We can argue all day over whether or not Creed were christian, but in the end it doesn't matter because they sucked, and this thread is about good christian bands.

The best christian band thus far is U2, with Evanescence in 2nd place. This is not because those bands are particularly good, its because christian bands tend to be so mediocre. I'm sorry, but most christian bands just rip off other styles of rock, but write lyrics praising God instead of the typical drugs, sex & rebellion (but maybe that's the point).

^^ they have faith in Jesus, but hate the traditional Church, and probably won't call themselves a christain band ever. But i do believe they are Christains. To answer this question it depends what music you like. I'm a Christian myself, and i hate alot of mainstream christain bands, but there are some smaller, underground bands that are amazing. If your into hardcore or metalcore and you want christain bands check out facedown records.

Emenius Sleepus
03-21-2006, 06:13 PM
^aw okay,.. just for me a CHristian band is the one that uses their music to deliver God's message, rather than just being Christians themselves. Christian bands have a more specific agenda, and their lyrics tend to be specifically about God and their experiences with their faith - not necessarily aimed to convert, but rather to share and spread the message. Because I don't really get into Christian scene, I've heard quite a few bands but mostly mainstream. I don't know if Jars Of Clay or DC Talk can be considered mainstream christian bands but I've heard a lot of their music (I have friends that I borrowed stuff off just out of curiosity) and for some reason the music never really appealed to me. The closest thing to a christian band that I actually liked was Creed, but even then they didn't have a specific religious agenda, but Stapp's lyrics were more about his own personal struggles with faith and other issues in his life.

I don't know why, but I haven't yet come across a Christian band or solo artist that really grabbed my attention, but i'm still open to any new discoveries

I never knew underoath and as i lay dying were christian, but there not bad either.

i read through this whole thread...at around 3:30 am here in nyc. It was worth it though; i got some good songs for our praise night.

I thought you people should check out Shane Barnard and/or "Shane and Shane." I've heard people not liking their vocals, but i beleive they are good. They do both electric and acoustic songs.

One notable song to check out is The Answer (both original and acoustic). They've got some cheesy songs, but it's definately worth it to weed out the good ones. Trust moi.

all the best,

Thrice?

Although Thrice themselves do not fall under the heading of "Christian Hardcore", Kensrue himself is a Christian. Almost all of his lyrics are inspired by Christian morals and their place (or lack thereof) in society today, with Kensrue drawing much lyrical inspiration from the 20th century author C.S. Lewis, who penned the well-known Chronicles Of Narnia books and countless books on Christianity.

Says Wikipedia. thats what I always use when i wonder about something.

They aren't. The were associated with some Christian bands but they actually made it a big point to show that they aren't. I think in one interview they said something along the lines of "We aren't a f*cking Christian band." So I'm pretty sure that means they aren't.

Swithfoot's old stuff definately was, they were on a Christian label and all that. I've known about them since 1996 or so because they were in the Christian music scene. They are still Christians but their music doesn't really have a message to it like it used to.

First, are there any Christian Bands that have a "Dance Rock" sound to them? For example, The Moving Units, The Rapture... well "Indie" bands to be more general.

Second, anyone know any Christian Electronic groups or artists? Coincidentially some kids mentioned Christian music cant have electronica as a genre, I highly doubt this for I dont think it matters.

04-17-2006, 02:19 AM
^great way to post a constructive argument ... POD, while nothing special, don't sound to me like RATM... it's like saying that Alice In Chains sounds exactly like Nirvana... similar sort of genres, except RATM is not nu-metal and never was. As for the rest of Christian bands like CHevelle or whatever, I just think they lack attitude. I always get the feel from them that they are just trying to prove to everyone that "god has good music too" - in that sort of tone of voice, instantly on the defensive. Maybe not down to the particular bands, but that's the general feel of the scene. And there is just something that I can't quite put my finger on, but I never liked about that sort of music. Maybe because it goes against my belifes (life morals and beliefs in general, not religious necessarily). Maybe it's because I like to make up my own mind on the issues and I don't like the preaching attitude that Christian bands have adopted. By Christian bands I assume we all mean the bands that have an agenda and that spread the message through lifestyle and lyrics, as opposed to just band members being christian but not using music as a tool to spread their message.

Most of the stuff I like has already been listed, but Killswitch Engage is by far my favorite these days, if you say they're not christian, thats fine, but look up lyrics to any song from any album and tell me what you would consider them because they are like freakin worship music.

I think its dumb for christian to be a genre, all it does is make people not even want to try it out. A genre should be chosen for the type of music, not what the lyrics are about, they dont have a political rock section at the music store. Im in a band with some guys from my church and if people ask what kind of band we are, I tell them alternative or hard rock. But if they ask me what the musics about, I'll tell them that it is mostly about God because thats my passion and what I look to for inspiration just like bob marley and pot (half kidding).

If christian bands really want to use their music to touch peoples lives, the first step is to get them to listen to it, but if you label yourself with a big I LOVE JESUS sticker, no one wants to give you a shot, and understandably so, theres alot of christian music out there that is cheesy and talentless, but that doesn't mean they all have to be, not to brag, but I think a non christian could enjoy my bands music even though they dont have the same beliefs as me.

Swithfoot's old stuff definately was, they were on a Christian label and all that. I've known about them since 1996 or so because they were in the Christian music scene. They are still Christians but their music doesn't really have a message to it like it used to.

If you believe this, then either you dont really listen to the music or you dont really get it, cause i think they are more open with it now then they ever have been. They just use a lot of metaphors.. if thats the right word... was never good in english, anyway, and they are still on sparrow records, which im pretty sure is christian label...

does anyone do any real reasearch??

Creed has been dubbed a Christian rock band by some, though frontman Scott Stapp has disagreed with the label: "No, we are not a Christian band. A Christian band has an agenda to lead others to believe in their specific religious beliefs. We have no agenda!"

Hmm. The Bible says that Christians are supposed to play their instruments 'skillfully'. I suppose Underoath's not Christian a Christian band either. I mean, they're disobeying the Bible...

antipop333

true dat, but anyway i don't think they had hardcore when the Bible was being put together
just like they didn't have automatic rifles when they wrote the ammendment in the constitution, 'right to bear arms'

<><

Mxpx is also Christian, even though so many people say they arn't..They're a good pop-punk band, though their new stuff is a bit more "punk" and may appeal to the "punk" kids, but I doubt it. Side Walk Slam is also a good Christian pop-punk band, they sound like a cross between Green Day, Mxpx, and Blink 182

Demon Hunter! their new album, The Triptych, friggin rocks! LISTEN TO DEMON HUNTER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no but seriously, if you like good metal without hearing vulgar language, they are the perfect band. And they have very calming softer songs too. Their song My Heatsrtings Come Undone was featured on the Resident Evil: Apocolapse soundtrack. DH is truly a magnificent band.

I don't know if this has been said but Stryper. They are the best Christian band in my book. If no one said them, you should all be ashamed.

Midi Cream Pie
09-12-2006, 06:17 PM
KING'S X

I'm not sure if they count as christian or not, but they are definitely spiritual. And besides that, they are a whole lot better than most of the bands posted in this thread so far.

Zimwibwe
09-13-2006, 03:21 PM
I agree with Midi Cream Pie, KING'S X owns every other band listed in this thread.

displaca_beast
09-14-2006, 09:08 AM
um thats easy.

first off.
CREED WAS NOT A CHRISTIAN BAND. THEY SANG "INSPIRATIONAL" MUSIC BUT AT NO TIME DECLARED THEMSELVES CHRISTIAN. just to let ya know.

As I Lay Dying. duh.
Norma Jean.
Demon Hunter.
The Chariot.
As Cities Burn.
Underoath.
Emery.
Delirious.
Audio Adrenaline.
Letter Kills.
Thousand Foot Krutch.
Yellowcard.
Mae.
Amberlin.
Sullivan.
Waking Ashland.
Number One Gun.
mewithoutyou.
Terminal.
Further Seems Forever.
Showbread.
Dead Poetic.
FM Static.

yea so those are some of my favorite bands. and theyre Christian too which makes them even better.

EDIT:: oh and Avenged Sevenfold isnt Christian to clarify it. The got the name from a verse in the Bible. They had an interview about it on this site like a week ago....

just because they are christian does not make them better you twat..because they are christian they appeal to you more so dont go round sayin that those bands are wicked or better cos they are christian

In christian music, "christian rock" is used far too liberally. Most "christian rock" is really "christian pop". However...
The best christian bands would have to be:

Jars of Clay

Oops how could i forget Creed?

Because you said good. Tremonti has some chops but the band is awful. ((IMO)) I would say Pedro the Lion. Also Obadiah Parker as well. I am pretty sure they are christian biased on their songs. And the fact they have a burning bush on their shirts and albums. They aren't really big right now but if they continue they could be big I think.

i read somewhere on this thread that Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Chevelle were Christian bands. C'est pas vrai! RJA have a song called " Damn Regret" and Chevelle has used a cursed word in a song before. you can't curse in christian music. you can only say "hell".
