definition of shred

In the context of an electric guitar, "shredding" refers to a virtuosic, highly technical style of playing the instrument, as exemplified by the virtuosos of the eighties such as Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Tony MacAlpine, Shawn Lane, Steve Vai or Yngwie J. Malmsteen.

The style of shred guitar is strongly founded in technique and theory. Many shred guitarists are extremely well versed in music theory and classical music. Much time is devoted to the development of technique through numerous exercises. A key practice tool is the metronome. Many virtuosic techniques displayed by "shredders" include sweep picking, tapping, legato, alternate picking, string skipping, as well as a combination of the aforementioned techniques.

Although shred is not as prominent today as in the 80's- highly technical guitar playing can still be found in many genres. Progressive metal and Death Metal contains many guitar virtuosos. John Petrucci, guitarist for Dream Theater, exemplifies the "prog metal" guitarist as well as guitar extraordinarie Michael Romeo from the progressive band Symphony X . And Chuck Schuldiner from the band Death, (Death/Tech/Progressive metal) also exemplifies highly virtuosic abilities on the guitar.

There are a handful of good shred guitar websites on the internet such as 'Shredaholic', and 'TruthInShredding' which feature content ranging from guitar lessons to discussion forums, and often offer help to aspiring instrumental artists trying to get heard.

Yeah that was an extremely sloppy cover. Exactly like I said, I'm not good enough to do a decent cover of that magnitude. I've still got a lot to improve. Of course you're just trying to help, and you're good at it too. You got me to learn oscilleration picking, which is an incredible tool. I just have a hard time using it currently. ill get used to it though, give me a few more months too sound more jazzy, listening sooo much to jazz now, or else ill never get used to it.

Some of you are sloppier than you're letting on. Some need to listen to some becker to understand that shred is not hammet.

10.5 of you can shred. Be proud.

btw i think shred is more your influence then your chops, if you listen and aspire to be great, you're a shredder, or will be, but if you casually wank it off to hammet or even to lane but never try and match it, you will never be one.

how can u figure out how many nps's ur playing.

apocalypse13
01-22-2006, 10:01 PM
Many ways.

Best way is this:

(BPM/60) x (Notation/4)

Example:
16th's at 120 bpm
(120/60) x (16/4)
2 x 4 = 8 nps

That's provided you know the bpm and all that mumbo jumbo, probably by playing off of a Power Tab or Guitar Pro score.

Another way:

Record yourself playing as fast as you can for 10 seconds. Count the notes you played and divide by 10. Anything like that would work.

well im trying that out now, im still seeing how fast i can play - well i found out i can play 14 nps cleanly, lets see how fast i can get very sloppy haha

edit - i found out at 250 bpm - playing 16th notes is a little over 16 nps - which i found out becuase i played that also cleanly and my metro nome only goes up to 250 bpm.

can i hear what 16 nps or what ever would sound like?

Righteous

Freepower

^ bingo. Thats whats generally interesting sounding anyway. I mean, Vai, Lane, Govan... All players who play mainly complex medium speed lines, and imo, some of the most interesting lines out there.

Course, thats imo, and thats where the beauty of music comes in.

I rather concentrate playing more complex licks at medium speed, than trying to reach a high NPS with simple ones.

I don't play fast all that often. I mean I can, 16nps is my record for playing stuff clean(although I really haven't tried to top it and I've probably slowed down, I honestly don't care), but thats like three notes per string scales, and gets boring FAST. So, I generally prefer more abstract and original sounding lines played a bit slower, and without staying at a constant speed too long.

Right well, here's how it works for me.

The two top studio guys in town are really expecting alot from me, they're both friends of my Dad's and they've seen me develop from since I first pickup up the guitar. Both say I'm pretty flippin' great (thankfully they tend to see me on my good days) and that I they'll be following my efforts in bands next year.

My teacher, on the other hand NEVER compliments my playing, it's always too quiet, too shy, too restrained, not adventurous enough. He does respect that I take on very difficult pieces, and more often than not perfect them. But there's always a criticism.

So basically, I'm under ****loads of pressure if I try to do anything.

But, I'm pretty much accpeted by the knowledgeable young musos as being the best all around young guitarist in town, and I've never even been in a band.

I'm incredibly picky about my own cleanliness, so much so that what was 'pretty clean' last week is pathetically sloppy today. I can play quickly, I suppose, but not anywhere near my standards for myself... if that makes any sense.

I suck by the standards of most of you on here but i can play the fastest out of the guitarists i know personaly which isn't saying much i suppose.

Guitar isn't really my main hobby, i play it a bit, an hour a day on average, but i never strive to be great, i'm not a very musical person.

I've believe I can... and well enough to get a jaw-dropping moment from a decent guitar player/musician.

and I'm extremely vain about it.

i applaud you for being the only axegrinder on this site who can sincerely shred, your music kicks ass...to be frank, i'm nowhere near where i want to be shred-wise, but i believe i've improved a bit since i started practicing uber-seriously lately, so i'm getting there...slowly, but surely

Lol, i know what your criticism is like. If it wasn't unerringly accurate, i think i would have hunted you down and killed you.

I create fantastically inventive chinesey rocky pieces with 6 string tapping sequences and you just kinda go "nice, but too sloppy." - it's only now i realise you were completely right, all the time. Motherfutcher. And thanks.

But, I'm pretty much accpeted by the knowledgeable young musos as being the best all around young guitarist in town, and I've never even been in a band.

I have, but never played a gig. Its funny, because every now and again i hear about these awesome guitarists - i'm half tempted just to cut them down to knee high, but ignorance is bliss and they aren't really serious anyway.

Yeah, I know what u mean, making other player look like **** really isn't a class thing to do.

I'm pretty sure I've done it b4 in guitar shops, but it's always unintentional... Always makes me feel kinda bad too, cuz even tho u may be faster than others or more technical, I personally don't think that it necessarily makes u a better guitarist than them ya know.

On a lighter note, I've never been in a band myself, but have jammed w/ several musicians & played a coupla gigs here and there (non-paying of course).

I use to think I was awesome because I could tremolo and sweep pick some CoB riffs lawl. Everybody talks about me as the best guitarist in town but now I realize I suck so I never play for anyone till I get good for real...lol it sucks!

Every time it goes in ups and downs but I think I will never be able to shred because my definition of shred is leveling up faster than my skills. Hopefully the summerbreak and the fact I'm taking lessons again will give me a boost.

I can a little, but I don't think I'll ever identify myself as a shredder, I'm a "guitarist" what a play is what I play, I don't want to be make myself fit a genre or style.

meh im in the same boat as many of you, the peons and intermediate guitarists think your good but the more you know the more you realise there is too learn. i can sweep, economy pick, tremolo pick pretty fast, do some complicated tap stuff, but then you look at gilbert and vai and co. and really puts me in my place. im not even working on my techniques in particular that much theese days althoughthey do come into it obviously, im working on getting my knowledge of the modes and stuff up, ive ben using major/minor harmonic minor and phrygrian for too long. it takes ridiculous levels of practise to get up to vai level, i cant spare the 11 hours a day =P

Oh god Resi, I made up this username like 2 years ago.

I don't like it that much really.

lol on a side note, I really don't care if other people label me. I just don't wanna label myself, especially with a term like "shredder" which is often used in a derogatory way by ignorant asshats.

I only have this username because "TruePower" was taken. I used to run a big clan/hacker's group/pretentious secret society. I still like FP though.

And label me away, but good luck finding something that fits.

How can you not label yourself?
Isn't that kind of impossible?
You always label yourself something for example you label yourself a "guitarist" and "male" etc. Labelling goes alot further than "emo" and "goth" :p:

But I agree, people who need to pidgeon hole other people suck ****.

The thing with me is that I have nearly 0 theory knowledge, I am self-taught over 1 year and 8 months now, with about 6 hours of formal training. My blues improv is good and I've combined that with fast alt. picking to develop a shred sound. Thing is my sweeps are really not up to par. I just switched to unanchored technique and it's amazing the change in speed. I can learn shred songs per se, but not immediately improvise shred. For example I have played Vai's Bad Horsie in Drop D at a gig, Racer X's Technical Difficulties. But I can't shred, I'm good at what I do though and get compliments from the other guitarists in the area. :)

its not full of yourself its honest, shred is a style, if you can play fast and clean and watveer, u can shred u know. If vai said he can shred, or van halen, or becker, would they be full of themselves?

If you can shred, the fact that you dont chose to label yourself as a shredder doesnt change the fact that you shred.

I can't play fast enough to call myself shred. I enjoy listening to shred, but I find myself spending a little more time writing music than practicing technique.

(Now, if only my writing was great, I could say I accomplished something).

True. It would sound a little concieted though. More appropriate I think would be "I like to play shred." "I can shred" just sounds kind of arrogant IMO.
