every day there seems to be a "val halen this" or "van halen that" thread on UG, so i was wondering, why does everyone think so highly of him?

i've heard OF him, but never heard any of his music ...

can someone tell me what's so great about him and some good songs to start listening to by him?

Ahh, Mr. Eddie Van Halen.

You more than likely have heard his music, but you just don't realize it.
A few of my favorites are "Unchained," "Panama," and "Ain't Talkin bout love"
Though I'm not a big fan of greatest hit albulms, I suggest that you buy "The Best of Both Worlds."

Eddie Van Halen is known in the guitar world for his amazing guitar solos. He is also known for using his signature "tapping" technique (more on tapping in the articles section of UG). Everybody here has already listed some excellent songs to download. My personal favorite is his guitar solo, "Eruption" (voted second best on most polls, right behind Page's Stairway solo). I also like "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love". And if you can, try to get their cover of "You Really Got Me"...it's awesome.

Alex Van Halen = Mediocre drummer who should be shot on account of him being the biggest arsebandit this earth has ever been graced with.

My fav's are Hot for Teacher(good tapping intro), Running with the Devil, You Really Got Me, and My favorite, jamies cryin. Eruption's okay, but I think anything by joe satriani, steve vai, or any of those shredder guys is better than eruption.

Wow, my god I missed so much on this thread. Gone for 2 days and a Van Halen thread comes up and I'm not here, shame.. anyways.. Derig, "Dreams" might not be that good on the cd live is probably the best song they play. It's freakin amazing. Anyways I highly recomend the greatest hits "The Best of Both Worlds". It's lacking a couple of good songs like "Spanish fly", "Human Beings", "5150", "Mean Streats", and maybe just 2 or 3 more.

Wow, suddenly I feel loved.

Since the thread closed, I've been coming on here less and less because that thread was what kept me coming back. I'll try to be on more now though.

To the threadstarter, Eddie Van Halen is basically a self-centered asshole. However, Van Halen the band (with David Lee Roth) is an amazing band whom you should give a listen. To start out, get the first (self-titled) album. If you like that, get their fourth album and my personal favorite, Fair Warning. It's a lot darker-sounding but it's a great album.

Say what you like, but I love all of Van Halen. From the the super-loud, obnoxious Van Roth days to the poppy Van Hagar albums. I do like Sammy Hagar better than DLR, he has a better voice and he sings the Roth tunes better live. Just listen to their live album. He has some great ones on Best of Both Worlds as well, those new tracks.

Fav albums:
VH1 (I love Ice Cream Man)
5150 (5150 is an awesome song, Dreams is good too)
Fair Warning (Mostly just for Unchained, you can really tell Eddie is P.O.'d)

And by the way, Roth was responsible for Dance the Night Away and Jamie's Crying, so think about that before you accuse Hagar of being too pop.

Van Halen is definitely one of the best and most influential bands to grace God's green earth. Their first album was basically the Led Zeppelin I of a new generation, and garnerd in a whole new style of guitar playing. The great thing about them is they are basically Aerosmith with bigger balls, a band that, in the begining, was just looking for a good time. They managed to have very pop hard rock tunes without seeming totally stupid. Sure David Lee Roth is basically a more obnoxious American version of Robert Plant, but for him it worked. Michael "The Midget" Anthony was infact one of the most solid bass players of the 80s while Eddie and Alex just kick some serious ass.
The only real problem with Van Halen is that almost every member is an egotisticle asshole. Eddie is almost impossible to work with as is Dave. Then Roth left and Haggar was brought in and while I don't have anything against Sammy he just wasn't the same persona that made Van Halen great. What really made them great was the balls-to-the-wall f*ck yah attitude of Roth. Sure 5150 has some great tracks like Dreams, but for me it wasn't the same.
Then of course Sammy left and Cherone joined. I try my best to forget those days.
But all in all, personas and attitudes aside they really do just rock. I find it hard not to like some part of Van Halen.

that's all you have to say? everyone knows that.. anyways, Jamie's Cryin' ain't that bad exept maybe for the chorus and Roth is what gave Van Halen it's kickass attitude and raw energy. Van Halen without DLR doesn't feel like Van Halen. Van Halen without Roth is like a computer without internet :) lol

Van Halen with Hagar is like an orchestra with a conductor; it just sounds better.

But I don't want to fight anymore, you have your opinions and I am right. (That was a joke.)

Thats one of the reasons Van Hagar sucks they lost that Hard Rock sound. However they probably would have lost some aswell if Dave would have stayed. 1984 has some stuff that sounds kind of similar that Hagar sound IMO.

Ok, I know this is a double post again, but this is even more important. I have just found out that a lot of sites selling rare Classic Van Halen (meaning the Roth era) footage are going to be forced to stop selling such material, by none other than the VH lawyers. Eddie-sheep, here is proof that Eddie and Alex do not care about you, they hate you, and do not want to keep the fans happy. They are tightass pricks who want to deprive us further. We have not one official release of Classic Van Halen footage, and we have to rely on sites that sell DVDs containing them, such footage would be: Largo 1982, US Festival 1983, Montreal 1984, Buenos Aires 1983, Rape The vaults Vols. 1 & 2, among many others. I mean, there won't be a reunion for sure, so why not just that? Footage at least? That is all we ask for! These two idiots have got to be the worst to their own fans than any other band.

What was that about?
Okay, so my teacher is that the Los Angeles International Airport and he sees Eddie, with Valerie. He says to Eddie, "Hey Ed, how's it goin'?" And Valerie turns to my teacher and says, "Shut the fuck up! We are tired, we want to go home, and we don't need any people right now!" Ed doesn't say anything, he just stood there. So they get into their limo, and my teacher is thinking, "what a pair of..." until Eddie walks out of the limo about a second later and says, "Hey, I'm really sorry about what happened back there, she's on the rag."

If it's one thing that the VH brothers are professionals at, it's bullshitting the fans over and over and over again. That's right. When has there ever been Classic van Halen footage released? Never. The only thing was that The Van Halen Story: The Early Years, but that wasn't even official or authorized! Always with the "Oh, there isn't enough footage to be released, there is very little footage..." crap. Bullshit. There's a list of actually recorded shows around...I believe it was in a Van Halen fact book. Ok. Well? Where are they? 5150 studios? The Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, which by the way, is ONLY 10 MILES away from where I live! Do I have to go over there myself? What! The brothers seemed to be "embarrassed" by their CVH legacy. Hmmm...funny they should say that, considering who they hired as a replacement singer.

So let's go over this. 1981, Edward is crying to his wife, "Why can't Dave be the star, why, why, why?" What the fuck was Valerie thinking? Oh, and by the way, Dave IS Van Halen, so that makes him the star, doesn't it, Ed? I know what you Eddie-sheep are thinking. "WTF, Eddie is the star! He's the very best! He's a god! He made Van Halen!"

No. Wrong. THINK ABOUT IT. DLR was behind the whole thing when it comes to the band's success!

So maybe Ed was looked at as a god...BACK THEN. What's he doing now? Hmmm? What is the latest musical thing he did? Those three abominal songs on that shit of a compilation called "Best Of Both Worlds", which is a slap in the face to CVH fans. Why? They put in three live tracks, classic Van Halen songs, being ruined by Sam The Sham. Absofuckinglutely sick. First off, you can defenitley tell that he doesn't respect the legacy that DLR left behind. In the early 1980s, Van Halen were one of the best headlining bands! In 1995, they were an opening act for Bon Jovi!

Now, 1985 was nothing but Eddie screaming and crying, and screaming and crying. Or so Andy Johns says. Dave gets back from filming his CFTH videos and such. "I THOUGHT YOU WEREN'T GONNA MAKE THE VIDEO!", cries Eddie. Oh, boo-fucking-hoo. What is sadder than a 30-year-old man crying about something like that? Hiring an idiot for a lead singer as a replacement after Dave bailed. The band's legacy is about to be thrown away here, people. As soon as the media gets ahold of this, Van Hagar are starting to act like idiotic 10-year-old girls bashing DLR. "He's this, he's that, he dresses like this....blah, blah, blah." First off, Sam The Sham had ABSOLUTELY no business interfering with the bands past history. None whatsoever. Was he there? No. So here he is, badmouthing the man who had left a lasting, but now dying (the Lying Dutchmen being responsible), legacy. Maybe things would have been better if he had kept his fucking mouth shut. Meanwhile, Dave is remaining professional about this. He talked about the split, but he wasn't doing the whole immature, ten-year-old girl name calling routine.

The name-calling continued. Remember that whole, "I'm going to kick you in the balls!" thing? Wow, very mature, Ed. You totally owned him. So basically, what happened at the MTV VMA fiasco, is that the band has hired Cherone for the vocal spot, without telling Dave at all. They fucked him over. Everyone was very excited about this, all the fans who have been waiting for this for 10 years, even some celebrities out there, you could see it when they all showed up on the awards stage. Everyone got up and applauded. And then, what happens? Eveything gets fucked up.

VH3 happens, it's a disaster. Here's proof of the brothers' hypocrisy:

"If Gary's in, he's in for life. Otherwise I'll take up the tuba."
Where's the tuba, Ed?

"Hiring Gary was a big mistake."
Realizing that a little too late, eh, Alex?

What happens in '04? We all know. That reunion. The "It Ain't Van Halen Without David Lee Roth" shirts were just flying. Like hell CVH fans weren't going to take action against this! Those campaign shirts have pissed some people off, but hey, it's true, man.

It has been almost 21 years, and fans are still waiting. Even if it isn't a reunion, could we at least have SOMETHING? No? You know, sometimes it's a shame to be a fan of this band...

Oh, and by the way, it's wings, not rings, people!

He wasn't even that great at solo's. He is probably the best Rythem Guitarist but not lead. Eruption and the solo for Beat It (Yea I said it) are the only ones IMO that are memorable.

^^^ Point proven. Van Halen (with DLR) is one of my fave bands but Eddie is a pussy and he's an very, very overrated guitarist, just like Stula1031 said. I like the old VH with DLR cause they stand for having fun. They had catchy riffs and great lyrics. Dave's voice was great, then along came Sammy who sucks dick for fun. Which I think made Eddie even worse. I mean this guy gets bullied by a chick.

Then of course Sammy left and Cherone joined. I try my best to forget those days.

Cherone wasn't all that bad. If you can get your hands on some videos of the shows in Australia you''ll hear Cherone renditions of Dave era Van Halen (Mean Street in particular) and its actually not that bad, much better than having to hear Sammy's version of Panama.

OUCH!

But Randy loved his mom and Eddie seems to love Valerie, I mean, they've been married for like 20 years. A lot of Classic Van Halen fans hold animosity towards Sammy becuase he was Dave's replacement, simple as that. I don't think the Dave fans would have liked the new singer who-ever it may have been.

powerage1984
02-23-2006, 10:30 PM
No, because he's an ass. During the 5150 tour, he was doing all these personal comments (which were stupid and immature) towards the Toastmaster General, and saying all these things in interviews, as if he were there when the band's problems arose! He had no business doing that...Dave hadn't said anything about him, why was he acting like an idiot saying that "Dave's this, Dave's that, he sucks, I'm a real artist..." Now, I have read some interviews from 1986, with Sham and Van Halen, and those were very hypocritical statements there. Absolutely horrible interviews! I'll post one later when I find it, to prove it.

And NOBODY...nobody would have been able to hold a candle to Dave as a lead-singer...but if they hadn't made stupid comments like Sam did, things would have defenitely been different.

JK...not a bad idea! :D Sabes que, man? I'm just going to put this one up, I don't care how much it will piss off people!

While that's true, Classic fans were already hating Sammy for the reasons I said. It happened again with Gary Cherone. Huge fiasco at MTV after everyone is lead to believe that Dave will be reuinting with Van Halen and then, oh ****, they aren't interested in a reunion with Dave. It doesn't matter who's singing after that, they aren't going to be liked at all by hurt fans of Dave.

Going with the crowd? Who said anything about that? I've never liked Sammy's voice. Not in one single minute of my life. I honestly prefer DLR. That is my choice to make. If my ears become irritated by the sound of Hagar, then they do. Simple as that. Nothing can be done about it. Believe me, I have tried to put up with his voice but I just can't.

Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, and George Lynch were the pioneers of metal guitar, in my opinion. I think that Eddie was probably the best showman of the three, and that's why he got such attention. Randy was a great guitarist but between the three, I'd go with Eddie just becuase he's Eddie.

Stula1031

If I could have all of the musical talent of a guitarist. i would choose Randy. No doubt about it. He was an amazing lead player... He did so much in such little time. Imagine how great he could have been if he had survived and continued to make music. I think that if he would've lived longer he woud have overshadowed Eddie Van Halen's eventualy.

Yeah, that's possible. But we'll never know. I think they both sound a lot alike, especially during live performances. They both spam pinch squeels a lot and they both do awesome fills. But it doesn't help that Randy only has about 2 albums and Eddie's got ~10. I did like how Randy used his classical influences.

But look at how much Randy accomplished with so few albums. Quality > Quantity. And in that respect, Randy was the greatest(as far as MY opinion goes).

Also, I agree with you Stula. I would choose Rhoads as well. He IS my guitar idol and hero, afterall....

What I meant was that Eddie had time to branch out and get better--or different--musically. Also, Randy died in 1982 so he never got to hear some of Eddie's later playing. How do you think he would have felt about the intro to Hot for Teacher?

But I don't want to turn this into Randy Rhoads vs. Eddie Van Halen. I like both of them, but I'd go with Eddie any day.

But that's also what I was getting at. I believe it was either Kelly Garni or Kevin DuBrow, but one of them said that everytime he heard Randy play, he seemed to get better every minute, and I agree with him.

Eddie is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. He is an innovator like Hendrix was. Eddie was famous for putting a technique/ and or sound that noone ever saw before on every album. Edward was also known for his instrumentals on all the early albums. VH got away from his signature sound when Hagar entered the picture. The Band was best known for their dark songs (Mean Streets, Sinners Swing, Cradle will Rock), but with the addition of Hagar VH was forced to move away from the dark songs because Sammy will not sing a song that has a dark overtone. This changed VH forever, they still had some good songs with Hagar, more along the lines of Boy meets Girl, Boy inserts penis.

VH Favs for me (at least check them out):
Atomic Punk
Sinners Swing
Hear About it Later
The Full Bug
Intruder
Out Of Love
Light up the Sky
Take your Whiskey Home
Poundcake
Humans Being
Up For Breakfast
Respect the Wind (this is just Eddie and Alex but a great song)
Baluchiterium
Big Money

to name a few....

in a certain point, ur right, eddie doesn't have the greatest solo's ever but you know, he's not Vai or Satriani. He's not dedicated to shredding, he just writes songs that kick ass and thats it. I think Jump is probably my favorite solo. So shoot me, it's a nice solo.

The first Van Halen album I listened to was VH3. I came into it without any prejudices, a total newb to VH. I think that is an awesome album, I don't see why you guys hate it so much. I hope it's not just becuase it's not DLR or Hagar, becuase that would be a very dumb reason. Still to this day, I think VH3 is really good.

I'm more shocked that you say you've never heard any VH. I'd say buy the first two albums. Start with them, probably just go in order, hear how Eddie continues to get better. To make it easy on you, here's the order of all of VH's albums...

Van Halen I
Van Halen II
Women and Children First
Fair Warning
Diver Down
1984
5150
OU812
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (aka ****)
Balance
Van Halen III (not their best, but it's still got some cool riffs and solos)

They're just a great fun band and Eddie rips it up, also Alex is a great drummer. Lots of talent in the Van Halen family.

I like Eddie's solos becuase they always make some kind of sense. Sometimes I listen to one of John Petrucci or Yngwie Malmsteen's solos and think, "OK, now he's just showing off." But even when Eddie is showing off, he still makes it fit and sound really good.

The writing wasn't the best and Cherone (whose actually a very good singer) tried to hard to sound like Hagar. There was some good songs, and it's a good album, but it's not a great Van Halen record.

Also, I'm suprised to hear how many people think EVH is overrated, to be perfectly honest, I don't know if he gets enough sometimes. He's an incredible writer and is more well rounded than other guitarists of that form. I personally don't think Joe Satriani is that awesome because he's only got one or two styles he can really do well. Vai is awesome though, He might be the only guy that could be better than EVH, but Vai isn't the writer that Eddie is. That's my opinion though. But, I'm probably right... lol...

If you guys ask me, Van Hagar was a much better band than the original band. Sammy enabled the band to take on new ideas, and vice versa.

I don't respect EVH too much, he's alright I guess, I don't go for his playing though. Mostly I hate don't like him for basically starting the shred/hair metal thing.

Besides the cheesy scene, Hair-Metal was breeding grounds for some of the best guitarists, vocalists and drummers in rock history. I often times think that it doesn't get enough credit in comparison to 70's rock which was much more blues oriented. I love both ends, so call me versatile.

Eddie Van Halen has given alot to the music business the past 28 years...and being a fan of both the original lineup and "van hagar" I will say that Sammy took them to other realms, but the over-usage of synthesizers will ALWAYS lead me crawling back to Diamond Dave's Van Halen for more because it was the first line-up and the most raw groundbreaking rock band in the world for 6 years.

I don't hate 3. I just think that the band's sound was so different that it really doesn't sound at all like Van Halen. When I first heard Without You on the radio I thought it was alright, but afterwards when they said it was the new Van Halen track, I couldn't believe it. Sounded like a different band altogether.
