this will sound stupid but... the dean evo x

i bought it as a backup guitar, but i modified it a little bit (raised the pickups, lowered the action, etc.) and this thing plays almost as good as my gibson :) and it only cost me $300

Hmmm...with a name like SteveVaiGuy, I'm sure he's in a Britney Spears cover band that throws in some Christina Aguilera tunes just to shake things up a bit. I second everything mentioned above, and I'd also like to throw in the PRS SE series.

If I had $500 (not counting sales tax) and couldn't talk Jenny into modding a guitar for me, I'd buy this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=517894

-OR- collect a few more aluminum cans and get this instead:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Electric?sku=511597

It ^^ has seven different pick up combinations ...........

I really like the Schecter S-1. I think you can pick it up for $499. If you can come up with an extra $100 go for S-1 Elite. :D

For metal: Ibanez RG, S, or SZ series.
For hard rock, classic rock, some metal: Epiphone Korina 1958 Explorer or Flying V
For Blues, classic rock: Fender MIM Strat
For friggin' anything: Fender MIM Tele

Yes, I believe the Tele is more versatile than the Strat. Sue me.

Yes, I believe the Tele is more versatile than the Strat +1, especially if you put a stacked 'bucker in the bridge

i dont know. ive got a tele and a strat. both have at least one 'stacked bucker. but the strat still has the extra pickup and a trem.
not saying one is better, but obviously one is more versatile.

One day somebody needs to get an MIM strat and tele, and see which one does better at different styles lol. Just pick classic songs from different styles like heavy metal, hardcore, blues, classic rock, emo, punk, country, well maybe country doesn't even matter so jazz instead, and rock, and rate each guitar's performance at each style of music. It wouldn't be very accurate though, because there's way too much preference involved. So really I guess they're both versatile, but vary depending on the users preferences. And mine dictate that the Tele wins.

So the Tele is better lol.

^i'm saving for an american strat, and i already have an american tele...i can therefore actually do that with recordings and let people make up their own minds :p:

Shecter, Dean, PRS, or a Strat.

Shecters are very nice, Dean's play real well, PRS's are heaven, and Strats are classic and have a real nice feel.
