Ane Brun is the only new artist I've come across recently. Her cover of Buckley's 'Morning theft' is so beautiful, infact, just go buy the 'My lover will go' EP off iTunes as there's a great Sam Brown cover as well (oh, and the two originals aren't bad either).

I really like this band called The Westminster Abbey that someone told me about a few months ago.

I'll try and describe them as sounding like the Vines or the Shins maybe even the Beatles... even though they're quite different.

Here's a purevolume link so you can hear some songs if you wish so:

Nothing new to report this week, but I'll restate my joy at having found

Beckett (http://www.beckettmusic.co.uk) and Insert Coin (http://www.insertcoinmusic.co.uk) in recent times.

ps andrew, Beckett are playing in camden on the 26th, don't know how near you that is but thought you might like to know :)

^ Hmmmmm, not too sure about going to that. The gig at the Half Moon last year would've been better, that place is great, just a backroom of a pub but has big(ish) bands.

Those pranks in your sig are funny, I think they went a bit far with the lesbian school one and getting his kids involved though.

I got another cool cat:

Jonnie 5ive (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=17473504)

(lame name I know but it's about the music!)

also, I saw the Like supporting Maroon 5 a year or so back... I thought they were terrible lol. The bassist was pretty good, but the drumming and guitaring was awful. Suppose they might have improved, but still...

Help She Can't Swim are pretty good.

Help She Can't Swim are great, but the album really wears off on you. I listened to it way too much when I got it and I don't think I've bothered listening to it for a good six months or so.

Yeah, I agree. The album gets a bit boring, but they're good live. I saw 'em supporting Test Icicles, and they blew the latter band out of the water.

They are a male & female duo from London playing weird industrial sounding rock n'roll. Good stuff ;)

Yeah, the singer (female) is. But they both live in London.

I didn't know that they wrote their albums apart?

Andrewbiles
03-19-2006, 03:07 PM
I'm not 100% certain of that, but I'm pretty sure thats what they did, at least for one of them, might not have been 'No wow' thinking about it, I think they locked themselves away to write that one. Can't remember now, I think there was a show on Channel 4 once about them where it was said.

not too keen on kiss kiss

DHBR i like, reminiscent of cursive at times. quite a strange band though. do you have any other tracks apart from those ones on myspace?

EDIT: i liked how you put a description of the bands as well. it made me want to look at them, as opposed to just seing a faceless url link

bobjewell87
03-19-2007, 08:27 PM
right, DHBR are very good, i like them a lot everyone else should too

also not sure how 'new' any of these bands are but still:

the advantage - got the drummer from hella in i think, they play post-rock based around old (s)nes and megadrive game soundtracks. some good parts and good riffs.

tower of rome - grindcore band, chicago. last.fm said they are similar to cutting pink with knives, but they're a lot heavier and have a bit too many BEAT DOWNS

dance club massacre - on Tower of romes top 8, a lot like rolo tomassi but a lot more metaller

fire! santa rosa, fire! - awful name, but quite good indie band from america i think, just a 'random' hype machine find. very good lead work and very energetic as well. managed to nab an ep

Not all exactly Alt/Indie, but meh:

Super Furry Animals (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=27565528) , this psychadelic folk band from Wales that have extremely good melodies.

The Knife (http://www.myspace.com/theknife), this electronic duo who make all their music on a laptop. Pitchfork was jizzing all over them, so it was obligatory that I check them out. Their music is pretty trippy but the pop sensibilities are thrown in to make for a pretty good listen.

Man I'd forgotten about these guys, I always thought that in the britpop boom they were the overlooked band of the 3 "big welsh bands" (These, Manic Street Preachers and Catatonia) - I always preferred these because I get annoyed by Cerys Matthews faking welshness in Rhoad Rhage (the original demo's, she sings it like a choir girl, but the label asked her to welsh it up apparently...), and the habit the Manics have of squeezing 10 words where 1 should fit gets on my nerves as well...plus these were on Creation, so therefore infinitely more Britpop than the others, hahaha.

I think they signed last year to Rough Trade, and just recorded an album in Brazil, but they seemed to fall off the face of the earth in the early 00's...

As an interesting aside they did/do have the world record for the longest ever title for an EP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch_%28In_Space%29)

Edit - mind you though, this is for "new bands", but then considering that they formed in 1995, but didn't get "best New Band" until 1999, then I guess here's as good a place as any

word up I absolutely love Battles, their debut cd is decent, the EP's are better
