anyone heard of these guys?

I just found this:

Some kind of Dutch 70s prog-rock band. Their guitarist is actually pretty good. And the yodelling too.

Sylvia is also a great song. They are an interesting band and the guitarist, Jan Akkerman, is brilliant. Focus III is a great album.

^ and rightfully so, he is a very underated guitarist.

I recently found this record in my dad's collection...I already knew about Focus for awhile, strange but I liked it. And this was one amazing record.

I've only got Hocus Pocus, and Jan Akkerman's version of Classical Gas, and they're both great songs.

A thread about Focus, hooray! :D

I've got Moving Waves on vinyl.

I'm i big fan too. The Harem Scarem solo is fantastic and so is the Eruption solo! And Jan Akkerman is indeed very underated. He isn't on the top 100 best guitarists list by rolling stone, but what the hell as long as i know, I don't care.

This was the song i was looking for
I was looking for it ever since i heard it on a plane to amsterdam in february.

The only song I have ever heard is Hocus Pocus. Can you guys recommend any other good songs by them?

04-04-2006, 05:37 PM
:haha Their singer makes the greatest faces.

Cool band, I'd never heard of them before. I'll definitely be checking into them more.

Hi, I was interested to read this post as I am a huge fan of Jan Akkerman and have seen him play dozens of times, once with Focus in 1974 and many times in recent years with his own band. Just to let you know, he was voted World's Best Guitarist in 1973 (not 1974) in the Melody Maker poll, beating Clapton into second place (not difficult though is it?). Focus were then at their height and the guitar playing on the Moving Waves and Focus III albums is still amongst the best I have ever heard. My own personal favourite album is called 'Hamburger Concerto'.

Jan plays the guitar with more feeling than anyone I have ever heard. He also excells at classical, jazz, blues, rock etc. You name it, he can play it to an extremely high standard.

If anyone wants to check out Jan's recent playing get a CD called '10,000 clowns on a rainy day'. It is a double live CD which contains lots of Focus covers as well as many of his solo favourites. If anyone wants to have a go at covering 'Am I Losing You', best of luck!!

If anyone wants to know more about this astonishing guitarist, please feel free to email me. I'll help all I can.

Im gunna take this thread as 'The official Focus thread'
Went to see them a few weeks back, Thijs Van Leer's the only guy from the original line up, hes quite old, but still kicks ass, it really exceeded my expectations, Sylvia was brilliant, and, as always Hocus Pocus was just mad

Ackermann is a god.

I have two Focus albums, Focus III and Moving Waves, and I love them both madly.

Focus has got to be one of my favorite bands. My dad is a big fan of them and he was the one that introduced me to this awesome band. My favorite album by them has to Hamburger Concerto.

I hate how Hocus pocus isn't as fast like their Live version. Still good though.

Moving waves is a good album as well

Sylvia was written bij Thijs van Leer for a girl he had an eye on. I think she didnīt like the song and she liked Thijs even less. The fact she didnīt like Thijs I can understand, but that song...legendary.
