Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience
Ginger Baker of Cream
Keith Moon of The Who

It's funny, because atleast one of these guys has been posted in every post so far. It's pretty cliche, but it's true that these guys are the greatest drummers.

Hart/Kreutzmann

Really? I didn't think either of these guys were what I'd call "outstanding"; alone or together. They kept a good beat going, but when I listen to the Dead, I usually either can't hear the drumming or don't care much for it. Basically I'm just listening to Jerry, Weir, Lesh, and whoever the hell is on keys depending on the album.

I feel like The Allman Brothers Band had a stronger drumming duo with Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson; they kept a strong, rhythmetic beat throughout every song.

Well, seeing the post title, I guess I can't really "disagree" with you.

deadhead313313
02-23-2006, 10:20 PM
^^Well, like, I always thought they had a mighty driving force when it came to drumming. They always had perfect co-ordination. And their drum solos were definately something to be rivaled

John Bonham for a conventional drum style done EXTREMELY well. Ginger Baker for a more innovative style. He seems to try to have some melody on the drums, as opposed to just keeping the beat. Everyone says Peart, but his playing is a little "mechanical" for my taste.

John Bonahm (Led Zeppelin) for being a very powerful drummer who could move his arms very fast like nobody's business.
Neil Peart (Rush) for being one of the most technical drummers ever. You can tell he really puts a lot of time into Rush's songs. Not to mention his solos...
Keith Moon (The Who) for being the perfect style for The Who, and for making those drum fills something even guitarists love to listen to.

I'll briefly move away from classic rock (sue me, asshole) and say Danny Carey from Tool is highly skilled.

I saw Jason perform on that show on MTV or VH1 or whatever it was with Ted Nugent, Sebastian Bach, Ian Scott, and Evan Seinfeld, and I honestly thought he was only a little more than decent.

I totally agree with the_next_bonham that he is overrated because of who his dad was, but then again I only saw him on this show, so I'm probably judging him a little too early.

^ I have. and as much as I like Bonham, hes not even top 5 for me. I just can't believe how underrated Steve Upton of the original wishbone ash is.
Peart > All. Palmer, Bruford, Upton, Moon, Paice, and Mitchells are good too.

Apart fro all the well known ones (moon, bonham etc), I'd have to say Billy Cobham is second behind Ginger Baker for me, followed by Mitch Mitchell, Carl Palmer, and BJ Wilson (Procol Harum).

Also, I've started to like Jim Fox of James Gang lately. I love his style.

John Bonham ruled. Neil Peart reigns. Honorable mention goes to Stewert Copeland. Hey!! What about Phil Collins? Has he ever played an unoriginal beat? He may well be worthy of being mentioned with the top two guys on my list. Everyone else mentioned were good just not as good. New King of the kit? Mike Portnoy. Mike eats the competition for breakfast .

The Best? Easy. Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta and Tommy Igoe. They may not be your favourite, but you can easily say they are the best.

Not to insult your picks but, seriously who are they. They may very well be great drummers but we can't exactly qualify them in this discussion until we know who they played for.

They were/are mostly studio drummers. Just check out their wikipedia for artists they played with, and I can promise you they played for many popular artists.

Id say my favorites are
Billy Cobham
Ginger Baker
Michael Shrieve
Jaimoe/Trucks
Mitch Mitchell- Largely overated for being in the Experience but underated because he was so overshadowed by Hendrix
John Bonham

Well Madzaa I'll give you this, they certainly played with some great artists. Mostly they toiled away in anonymity . Noticed by few people outside of serious drummers and complete music fanatics. I'm guessing you're the latter . Which is awesome in itself. Kudos to you and your serious knowledge of the history of recorded music.

No probs, I just find it a shame that they don´t get the recognition they deserve. :)

Besides that he drove a car into a pool(though I still argue the pool attacked him while he was in the car) and played kickass drums. Arguably the best drummer of all-time IMO.

Ringo was definitely underrated for his pocket-drumming, he just wasn't a showy guy.
Also, Nick Mason was amazing! Just because you don't have speed doesn't mean you can't have awesome fills.

Listen to King Crimson Red or Yes Close to the edge and you'll know what this gentleman is about.
