I have Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and listened to it almost constantly through the summer. Haven't listened to them in quite a while, but they're a very good band.

I seen them along with Rush, AC/DC and The Stones in Toronto in '03. From what i remember they were pretty good.

You ought to get "Hit To Death In The Future Head". I'd rate that 8/10.
Yoshimi is very well composed. I like the overall theme of robots, love, despair and overcoming things.
You rated Zaireeka a 10? Are you nuts! There is no other album harder to listen to than that, but what they did with it is amazing. The whole concept of it makes it one of the ultimate stoner albums(s).

They're a very good band, and I enjoy listening to them once in a while. I think they're bringing out a new album this year, so that should be good.
Yoshimi is their best song. But 'Thank you Jack White (for the fibre optic Jesus that you gave me) is also very good- It's a song about how Jack White gave the guy a fibre optic Jesus, if you hadn't guessed. :p:

It's not that it's overwhelmingly awesome (though it is good), it's just I never really cared for that song and they put a nice little spin on it. Not many songs I don't like by The White Stripes, but "Seven Nation Army" is one of them. That and "We're Going to Be Friends".

Soft Bulletin is classic, their best IMO. I really would like to see them live, from what I've heard their one of the best live bands around. My friend saw them a few years ago on new years eve with Wilco says it was the best show ever, they even had huge ballons fall from the ceiling.

Just picked up the Soft Bulletin, haven't had a proper chance to listen to it, just the first few songs in the car being interupted by stops, and conversing, but I don't think it is that much better than Yoshimi. But we'll see how that turns out after I listen to it properly.

I just got At War With The Mystics tonight and the on the first listen I wasn't too impressed. There's 3-4 cool songs but there's also a number of boring instrumental sections that sound like they're straight off Yoshimi. That's the reason I can't listen to Yoshimi all the way through. The Soft Bulletin is by far the best albums I've heard from them.

Summer...Thurston mentioned it quickly, but I don't know if it is really happening. And if so, I don't know where or when, other than summer.

Edit: The Sonic Youth Tour dates were just updated:

April 20 Nouveau Casino, Paris, France
June 18 Bonnaroo Festival, Manchester, TN
July 6 MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV with Pearl Jam
July 7 Cox Arena, San Diego, CA with Pearl Jam
July 9 Forum, Los Angeles, CA with Pearl Jam
July 10 Forum, Los Angeles, CA with Pearl Jam
July 13 Santa Barbara Bowl, Santa Barbara, CA with Pearl Jam
July 16 Bill Grahm Civic Auditorium, S.F. CA with Pearl Jam
July 18 Bill Grahm Civic Auditorium, S.F. CA with Pearl Jam
August 5 Lollapalooza Festival, Chicago, IL

With all of those dates I don't know if the Flips, and SY will be able to tour together.

Saw them live yesterday - fantastic. Wayne Coyne did the space bubble over the audience and then they opened with race for the prize with giant inflatable robots, people dressed like santa/aliens and loads of confetti...probably the best concert i have seen.

I got them all going at the same time. I got itunes, a DVD player, a Boombox, and a laptop.

But the smartest thing to do is to rip them all and put them all together with audacity or the like. I did that and made my own cover art and stuff.

It is a good album too, btw.

Andrewbiles

It is a Flaming Lips documentary. The name Fearless Freaks comes from a football team name that Wayne, his brother and his friends had when they were teenagers.

I am so pissed right now.

I have been waiting to see the Flaming Lips for so long. I finally got to see them yesterday at the Virgin Festival in Toronto. The whole show was way behind almost from the very beginning. The Flaming Lips came on as the headliners and started to play what I thought was going to be the best I show I had ever seen in my life. Half an hour into the show Wayne says "Captain America has just informed me that we have to leave now." I was positive he was screwing with us. Then everyone started to leave and I couldn't believe that it was actually over. I don't see why they couldn't have just cut a few songs off of each person's set. Also I have heard that a lot of it was Muse's fault, going way over their set time. Has anyone ever had an experience like this?

DorkusMalorkus
09-10-2006, 12:12 PM
That really sucks, trev. Damn Muse. Damn Muse to hell! And they did a crappy Lightning Bolt cover!

yeah that happened in a festival i went to. like, all those cool local bands where playing on a second stage and all of them were promissed half an hour on stage but only played 15 minutes cause of the main bands on the main stage. the exception was this cool mdfkr called Legendary Tiger Man that said "**** you I ain't leaving the stage till my half an hour is over."

it sucks

My friend saw them a few years ago on new years eve with Wilco says it was the best show ever, they even had huge ballons fall from the ceiling.

God that really would be the best show ever. I saw Wilco a few months ago and I still can't stop thinking about it.

But The Flaming Lips are absolutely fantastic, I just got Clouds Taste Metallic yesterday. I must say it's probably their best.

"Transmissions From The Satellite Heart" is a good start. It and "Clouds Taste Metallic". These two were just before Soft Bulletin so you can see the evolution of Flaming Lips (with the introduction of Stephen Drozd). Then just work your way back in their catologue. Then get Zaireeka (try the internet for a cheaper deal as it is a 4 CD album).

am I the only one who thought At war with the mystics had a few great songs, and the rest were poor filler?
yes. Honestly, its quite possibly my favorite album by them.

So I'm making a Flaming Lips Mix CD at the request of my friend who is a classic rock junkie. So I'm thinking about this:

Race for the Prize
She Don't Use Jelly
Using Enthusiasm as a War Deterent (a little speech/intro Wayne gives to the Yeah Yeah Yeah song off of UFO's At the Zoo)
The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (Live UFO's At the Zoo version)
The Spiderbite Song
Fight Test
Turn It On
Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon
Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robots Pt. 1
Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robots Pt. 2
The W.A.N.D.
Do You Realize??

Any other Suggestions? I tried to mix it around their whole career, but naturally it ended up a little Yoshimi heavy.

EDIT: For the record I don't have Clouds Taste Metallic. Although, I really should get it.

Soft Bulletin: 9/10 Not a full player but it has Race For The Prize, and Felling Yourself Disintegrate (two of the best songs I've ever heard).
Clouds: 9/10 same as Soft Bulletin.
Mystics: 9/10 Really, really great, but a few songs I can't get into.

+1 I felt the exact same way. I think I had too high of expectations for the album though, considering that most people consider it better then Yoshimi, and I absolutely love that album. So when I got it and first listened to it, I loved Race For The Prize but I thought everything else was a letdown. Slowly but surely, I began to appreciate the genius of the album and now I find it almost equal to Yoshimi.

wow thats my favorite album of theirs, it and clouds are the only albums of theirs where i don't feel the urge to skip any tracks. with song like be my head and chewin the apple of your eye how could you go wrong. but in the end i guess to each his own.

ronald jones was pretty genious in my opinion, i love the amounts of fuzz he brought to the table during his stay with them. his era is defnintly my favorite of the lips. although i do like a lot of their new stuff, their mid period was their prime i think.

OK forgive me for not trolling through the 200+ posts in this thread.

I have heard the Flaming Lips have a godly live show. I'm not very familiar with their music, although I must say most of it I have heard is very appealing. I'm just wondering if anyone has gone to see them and if they would recommend them, so that I can try to snag them somewhere on tour (my friend went to Sasquatch and saw them, I saw the band list in April and :O almost died).

Do it. I personally haven't seen them but from people I've spoken to that have and from live footage I think most people rate them as one of the best live bands out there.

I haven't seen the band live either, but acquaintances who have assure me that it was one of (if not, the) best concert they have ever been to.

I have also been given that impression through YouTube videos. They look very entertaining on stage, the crowd seems very engaged, and the music remains as superb as on album.

However, I was very taken aback when I saw someone list them as one of the worst live bands they had ever seen on a forum I encountered through a Google search. Everyone gave them hell, though. :p:

Has anyone seen the video for 'Phoebe Battles the Pink Robots'? :haha
('Phoebe' as in the TV show Friends, and this video appeared on the Season 9 bonus features).

Yippee, I found it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7yF3YYG1DI).
(Video on Season 9 set actually has pictures of Phoebe, so its a lot better).

Favorite TV show + Lips = good.

:haha

I agree with you about Ronald Jones, he was amazing. But I've tried to get into Transmissions, but it just doesn't work for me.

^I actually just got Transmissions and I am really digging it so far. Not quite as good as The Soft Bulletin but better then Yoshimi in my book. I also just got Clouds Taste Metallic though I have yet to really listen to it, so I hope that's at least as good as Transmissions and Soft Bulletin.

I suggest you buy four disc playing units first. :p:

I mean, I love the Lips and all, but isn't that a rather ridiculous way to release an album?

i just saw them at the 10,000 lakes festival and it was the best concert i've ever seen.

and afterwards i got into a screening of their movie "christmas on mars" and it was the craziest ****ing thing i've ever seen.

wayne was at the door to the circus tent that it was shown in and he was greeting everyone. i walked by and told him that they ****ing rocked and patted him on the sholder and then decided that i didn't feel that i had quite expressed my feelings. so i got back up and hugged him and told him that i loved him. and he said "thanks, i love you too. this is gonna be fun." to which i replied, "I love you."

so i think i'm pretty much in a relationship with wayne coyne, and we're not gonna let the fact that we're both strait men get in the way of something special.

I think it would have been really cool if they somehow found a way to sell all 4 discs for the price of 1 and/or released a single disc version that had the songs mixed down and made the 4 disc set a collector's item or something. But to do it solely as the 4 disc set and selling it at such at high price wasn't the best move. Although if I do ever get the chance to listen to Zaireeka with 4 stereos, I have the feeling it will be one of the coolest things ever.

i think its really cool that they released it that way because it shows that they really didnt care about how the album would be recieved at that point and wanted to make something that would be just as much about the experience of listening to the album as the music itself

speaking of the experience, if all goes well, i will be having a listening party tomorrow night *crosses fingers*

Oh, I have enough disc players, don't worry. :p:

Ridiculous? Of course, but innovative at the same time.

I think a single disc 5.1 dolby surround sound version of Zaireeka is in the works...

Or at least so I heard a long time ago.

They're both good, but I'm definitely more biased towards Yoshimi because it was the first Flaming Lips album that I owned.

I think Yoshimi is much easier to like. Something about the Soft Bulletin attaches itself to memories and becomes priceless in time.

^I completely agree. Yoshimi made a much bigger first impression on me but The Soft Bulletin has grown on me a lot over time so I would go The Soft Bulletin. Also, to whoever mentioned Clouds Taste Metallic, amazing album. Second favorite Lips album after Soft Bulletin.

I've been digging these guys a lot lately. They may be one of my very favourite bands, but I can't tell for sure. I've only listened to them intensively for the last couple months. Anyways, The Soft Bulletin is such a ridiculously good album. I think I prefer it to Yoshimi, really.

^Get Clouds Taste Metallic next. It's a bit more guitar-driven then TSB and Yoshimi, but it's still amazing.

I actually bought a Gov't Mule album over Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, recently.

It was a very hard decision to choose between the two, but I really wanted some Gov't Mule.

I'll probably buy Transmissions from the Satellite Heart the next time I buy a CD.

Clouds Taste Metallic is awesome. Just sayin'. Reminds me a bit of early Modest Mouse, except without Isaac Brocks' annoying voclas.
