Probably Mike Einziger. He got me thinking about expanding my playing into more genres, such as jazz and funk and he has this thing about trying to use open strings, and actually making it work. I've tried to take that to heart, and I've used some of the chords he likes to use without meaning too.

As a singer, Robert Plant has definitely had the most influence on me. Striving to match his vocal prowess really helped expand my vocal range, and I've absorbed quite a bit of his technique along the way.

As a guitarist.....well, it was actually Graham Coxon of Blur who made me start playing guitar, as I was very much into them at the time. Since then, I'd say Jimmy Page has been quite a big influence on my playing style, with a bit of Brian May thrown in as well. And I learned how to do pinch harmonics thanks to Coheed & Cambria.

Rick Wakeman has probably had the most influence on my keyboard playing lately. When I play bass, I try to emulate people like Chris Squire, who have complex, sometimes improvisational basslines. And on the odd occasions when I play drums, it's definitely Joshua Eppard of Coheed & Cambria who influences me, as I now copy his unusual style of open-handed drumming.

NoLeafMetal
05-08-2006, 12:12 PM
I play bass in my band so Crommington (from RatM) and Flea (Chilli Peppers) are my main influences. I also have the smooth job of writing lyrics and in that respect I have been influenced by quite a lot of people: Hetfield, Osbourne, Zack De La Rocha and Marilyn Manson (though I'm not a Manson fan). Perhaps, also, to an extent, Malakin/Tankian from SOAD.

Though my first influences were the classical composers, whose songs I learned when I first started playing piano all those years ago: Bach, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Brahms etc. That's what got me into music in general. And why I never went down the path of rap and hip hop.

Lordy, it's hard to say. I see Joy Division and the Smiths as pretty big influences in what I play, but also a good dose of folk music influencing me, like Joni Mitchell, John Prine, an' some of Neil Young's more acoustic stuff.

I try not to imitate anyone's voice though, cos I just sorta feel like I'll always do best if I just f'ing sing it.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is the reason I picked up a guitar in the first place (hence my avatar). Him and Yoshiko Fujiyama of The 5,6,7,8's are probably my two biggest influences as a guitarist. A a lyricist, I deeply admire Cedric Bixler-Zavala's work.

Well, Thomas Erak has defiantly inspired me that you can sing and shred guitar at the same time, but John Mayer has got the pipes, and Kurt Cobain proved that you can take 4 power chords and write a decent song. So its a weird combination but, all of them have influenced me a little bit more than one person could do.

For guitar wise: Thomas Erak, Fred(From Taking Back Sunday), Tom Delonge, Jimmy Page, Adam Jones(Tool), Matt Skiba(Alkaline Trio; First band I saw live that really made me wanna play guitar alot more.), James Iha,Rober Smith, and Kurt Cobain.

Vocals: Maynard James Keenan(Tool), Robert Plant, Adam Lazzara(Taking Back Sunday), Brandon Flowers(The Killers), Matt Skiba, Billy Corgan,Robert Smith, and The lead singer of The Kinison.

Aaron Gillespie from underoath: I'm not a drummer but he's incredible and makes me want to play drums haha
Justin Shekoski from Saosin: incredible guitar work, also the guitarist from drop dead gorgeous i get inspired to write break downs everytime i listen
and finally for vocals Anthony Green from circa survive and craig owens from chiodos. both of them = pure talent

I have quite a few influences, but if I had to choose just 1 person, it would without a doubt be Dave Murray from Iron Maiden. Kirk Hammet is also a big influence, but I can see myself relating to Murray rather than Hammet.

I can't believe that I'm saying this, but the guitarists of Boston have influenced me the most. Sure all you metalists laugh at this, but they complimented so nicely with their simple riffs. Pure genius. I also like alex lifeson's arpegio riffs, the edge's tone, jimmy page's sloppy but brilliant improvs, Hendrix's use of blues scales, and slash's emotional solos. And who can forget the looseness of evh?

Guitar:
Billie Joe Armstrong
Noel Gallagher
Jack White
Kurt Cobain
Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead)
AND!!!
My dad... always been around him when he plays, whether it's a memorized Walter Becker lick or some Frank Zappa craziness. I owe my dad to introducing my to the guitar in the first place. He is my biggest influence.

Vocals:
Billie Joe Armstrong
Jack White
Julian Casablancas (The Strokes)
Beck Hansen

I don't play lead. I play Rhythm/lead, which means I suck at lead. Anyway, the lead guitar players I've mentioned have more influenced me with chord and song structures than playing chops. I don't care, nor have I ever really cared, to be a lead guitar player. You all may hate me for this, but I find guitar solos annoying, unless they're under 30 seconds.
