Floyd was the only band who could consistently pull off the 20 minute song and not butcher it; in fact, they made some classics out of 'em. ;)

I have a live version of Stranglehold that comes in at about 20 minutes. It's a lost art really, not to many bands due the long songs anymore. Pink Floyd was the best at them though, it always flowed well and never got boring.

Meatloaf was awesome at writing long songs. Who agrees?

Dire Straits was also pretty good at writing long songs. There's a couple songs on the Love Over Gold album that are quite long, and you got Money For Nothing which kicks ass.

The Allman Brothers Band - "Mountain Jam" ; Eat a Peach/Fillmore East time = 33:40 / At the Ludlow Garage (Disc 2) = 44:00
"Whipping Post" ; At the Fillmore East = 23:05

Led Zeppelin - "Dazed and Confused" ; How the West Was Won = 25:25
"Whole Lotta Love" ; How the West Was Won = 23:07

Pink Floyd - "Atom Heart Mother Suite" ; Atom Heart Mother = 23:44
"Echoes" ; Meddle = 23:28

Grateful Dead - "Dark Star" ; Live/Dead (The Golden Road) = 23:18
"Blues for Allah" ; One from the Vault (Disc 2) [Live] = 21:01

Yes - "Dance of the Dawn" ; Tales from Topographic Oceans (Disc 1) = 22:37
"Ritual/Nous Sommes Du Soleil" ; Tales from Topographic Oceans (Disc 2) = 21:52

I'm giving a few examples from some different bands of the longer songs I've currently got on my iPod/iTunes. It seems as though Yes and Pink Floyd are the two bands that have songs in the 20+ minutes range that are off of studio albums; the rest are live stuff.

Floyd was the only band who could consistently pull off the 20 minute song and not butcher it; in fact, they made some classics out of 'em. ;)

It's because their music isn't all the same. It's progressive and it changes within the song. It has a beginning, a climax and an ending. It's like a big musical story whereas jam bands like Grateful Dead just pretty much jam with the same chords for 30 minutes.

Edit: Eight minutes isn't very long. Every song should be 8 minutes, that's the perfect length.

Led Zeppelin - "Dazed and Confused" ; How the West Was Won = 25:25
"Whole Lotta Love" ; How the West Was Won = 23:07

Dazed and Confused, on How the West Was Won is actually a medly of three songs, Dazed and Confused, Walter's Walk, and The Crunge, while Whole Lotta Love is a medly of five songs, Whole Lotta Love, Boogie Chillun, Let's Have a Party, Hello Marylou, and going. I'm not sure if these really count as long songs, I guess they do.

Iron Maiden "Rhime of the Ancient Mariner" approx. 17 mins (probably not the most classic rock)

The Beatles "Hey Jude" approx. 7ish mins (probably long for a single at the time)

Mandrake route by DP have a 25 minute version but no one is going to beat Jethro Tull. Maybe if you combine parts 1 and 2 of tubular bells I think they go for about 30mins each (a bit less) but thats not really classic rock.

Agreed. I don't mind if a song is long, as long as it has different parts and sections. If your music is making a point that happens to take 20 minutes, by all means go right ahead.

But when I hear mindless pentatonic jamming over the same chord progression with no climaxing or variation or whatever, I want to shoot myself. Or the band.

The great thing about Floyd is that they don't jam. Every note is perfectly planned and is meant to be there. Gilmour is not a sloppy player at all. Floyd's songs have a meaning, it's not just pointless jamming like Grateful Dead.

Well, their jams don't really tell a story. They don't have a beginning, middle and end. They just stop when they decide to. I do like Grateful Dead though, don't get me wrong.

Yeah DT's Album "Six degrees of Inner Turbulence" contains 2 CD's. The second contains only 1 song which is 42 minutes long. It is broken down into segments becausedrummer Mike Portnoy (Also produced the album) decided that the novelty would wear off and then it would become frustrating to find individual segments for the listeners.

Other DT songs that should be noted are:

A change of Seasons (23:08)
Learning to live (11:30)
Home (12:51)
The glass prison (13:47)

The great thing about the Dead was that EVERY song was different when seeing them live, Floyd have everything planned, no spur of the moment stuff. The Dead did stand for something every song did, they loved what they did and the fans loved it too, so they did it as long as possible... Dead>Floyd IMO.

That's the kind of attitude that has killed a lot of great music. Once upon a time it wasn't uncommon for bands to have five and six minute songs, and then for some bands to have eight, nine, ten minute "epics"( some even longer) that were all masterfully written, tremendous pieces of music. Now music today is written for people with a very short attention span. Long songs are only boring if you can't appreciate the music. In my opinion there are some great songs that can't go on long enough! Long live epics!

Yeah! Screw easy listening radio songs.

Pink Floyd has been mentioned and mentioned again, so I'll say something different. Recently, I've been getting into Emerson Lake and Palmer. They have quite a couple long songs; specifically

Karn Evil 9, 29:41. Was split up between album sides on the original LP. I have a live version of the 1st impression part 2 and 3rd impression together, and its about 18 minutes, with a drum solo that's about 5 minutes long.

Tarkus, 20:43. Was divided into 7 different parts, but stills tells a single story.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond in its entirety is 26:11. And that's really ****ing long, especially for something on an album.

I think I have a John Peel Floyd session of Echoes which is actually 25 minutes long. It's not quite as perfect as the original though.

(sorry of this was mentioned) Yes's album Tales From Topographic Oceans has only 4 songs:

The Remembering: 20:53
The Ancient: 18:35
Ritual: 21:52

And some Led Zep fans just forget "In My Time of Dying", which is actually longer than Achilles (but Achilles is better, admittedly)...

Why are you counting live songs? That doesn't make any sense. Of course live songs will be long. You've got to stick to studio songs. Not live ones
