I agree. The new stuff doesn't really get my attention (after Green Album IMO).

5 Favourite songs:
1) In The Garage
2) Buddy Holy
3) Say it Ain't So
4) The Sweater Song (Undone)
5) Hash Pipe

I'm suprised no one said take this to the Pop-Punk/Emo forum. Many say Weezer is Emo, but IMO they are Alternative Rock.

Am I the only one who likes Maladroit?

Arthur Curry
07-21-2007, 02:50 AM
No, I thought Maladroit was way better than Green. There's kind of a pattern with Weezer.

-Blue Album (clean-cut, non-emotional lyrics)
-Pinkerton (sloppy, emotional lyrics)
-Green (clean-cut, non-emotional lyrics...except it sucked in comparison to Blue)
-Maladroit (sloppy, emotional)
-Make Believe...I literally thought Make Believe was a joke at first.

I didn't think Green was all that bad. Or Maladroit. I heard from various semi-reliable sources that Maladroit was absolute crap, but I found it for three dollars on Amazon a few years ago and I've loved it ever since.

I love how Pinkerton has a theme throughout. Most of the songs pertain to Asian chicks, cellos, and a promiscuous Rivers Cuomo. For me, it's like what In Utero was to Nevermind for Nirvana. It's more raw, more personal, but it still maintains the pop-oriented songwriting.

It's definately my favorite Weezer album. Until they put out Songs From the Black Hole.

Well the plan is they're going to re-record the songs. Awhile ago when they were considering putting it out, the record executives deemed the songs unworthy of an album. But I think it's Weezer at its finest. Rivers used to put the written music up on his MySpace and he would judge people's attempts at covering the songs, since he wasn't allowed to release the recordings. But eventually he was forced to take the music down.

"I Just Threw Out the Love Of My Dreams" is something you should all download.

some of you have maybe seen this already:

its from an email from Karl.

Weezer in the studio: Album 6 due in 2008!

(to regular watchers of weezer.com: yes, youve seen this already. To those who havent been tuning in, check it out!)

Dateline: an undisclosed location in Southern California, deep inside weezer lines. Im sitting in a large room that normally doesnt serve as a place where bands record their albums, watching weezer, well, record their album. But then this band isnt known for doing things normally. And this album, their 6th, is sounding pretty far from 'normal' so far.

There wont be any song titles or other detailed in-progress info in this report, but I can describe the vibe in the room and the sound in the air. The vibe is healthy, full of dialogue, cooperation, forward thinking and interested experimentation. The sound is definitely weezer, but not quite like any weezer I've heard before. Or rather, not like any one style that weezer has ever tried, but a fresh combination with some new flavors on top. It sounds as if the band has grown into a new land that they had previously only skirted around the edges of - a land where arrangements are getting adventurous, where song structures, lengths and feels are given plenty of sunlight and fresh water and allowed to grow into what the songs demand. It sounds really cool. Like an excellent music farm. Or perhaps a food co-op.

The band started this session on Monday July 9 and is scheduled to continue recording here till October. They came into this session with 6 weeks of earlier springtime work under their belts, which yeilded perhaps half of an unfinished album. Now theyve got their sights set on the other half, and all the overdubs and touches the final set of tracks will need to be ready for the world in '08. Based on what I've seen over these past 2 weeks here at Camp Weez, they should have no trouble delivering the goods.

im excited. new weezer is always a good thing, even if the sound will be a little different.

It upsets me when people always say, "Yeah, the Blue Album and Pinkerton are the only good ones."

Weezer are one of the most consistantly great bands around, always putting out good stuff. The Green Album was just as tuneful, catchy and great as anything off the Blue Album, and Maladroit was this great Classic Rock-ish album with great songs and some of Rivers best guitar playing and whatnot. I admit Make Believe was pretty weak, but it's still a Weezer album.

I don't see how people can tear their albums apart when they have always sounded like Weezer.

Blue and Pinkerton are both amazing albums, but they're certainly not the only good'ns.

Woah, didn't even know there was a Weezer thread. o.O

Anyways, list time!

My favorite Weezer albums:

1. Blue Album
2. Pinkerton
3. Maladroit

I love the above three albums. Personally, I think they're miles better than the Green Album (Cumo went for a batch of the "perfect pop rock songs", but at the expense of being redundant and formulaic) and Make Believe (better and much more diverse than the Green Album, but just as boring).

Anyways, anyone else here feel that Fall Together is insanely underrated? It's one of my top favorite Weezer songs, and yet I've never really heard any positive comments on it.

Just rambling:

- My Name is Jonas = AMAZING live experience

- I must have played Say It Ain't So on guitar like seventy times. Damn. And I remember the first time I was finally able to play the riff right. It was like 3am in the morning, and all of a sudden it just "clicked", and I was able to play it. I was so happy, considering I had always told myself, "Learn Say It Ain't So, and you'll be as good as you'll ever want to be." Sounds pretty funny now, heh.

- How come Keep Fishin' and Island in the Sun weren't massive hits? It completely astonishes me.

- Why Bother kind of annoys me. Personally I think Pinkerton would be stronger without it.

- How come Cumo is so smart and yet his latter lyrics are all so inane? Pretty disappointing, considering he's capable of so much better.

- Falling For You is definitely also one of Weezer's more underrated songs. Lovely track.

- Take Control's chorus is beautiful.

- Death and Destruction has a beautiful guitar tone (and guitar work).

...yep.

YEAH RIGHT. Green Album was mediocre at best. The second half is all filler and the whole album feels manufactured to an extent. I mean most of the songs are just power chords. The only songs that stand up to their previous work are Photograph and Island in the Sun. Maladroit is supposed to be worse so ive never bothered to give it a listen.

^ Maladroit is tons better, anyone who disagrees has terrible taste in music and fun guitar work.

I'm looking forward to the new album if it's going to be experimental, but I don't think it'll be that great since Make Believe really let me down, regardless if I thought it was the bomb when it came out.

1. Tired Of Sex
2. Undone
3. The World Has Turned And Left Me Here
4. El Scorcho
5. Say It Ain't So

I must also say that I'm a sucker for Hash Pipe. I love that song, such an evil feel to a Weez song. Maladroit is the shiznit, just fun to listen to really. Make Believe is just good for an occasional listen, along with "Haunt You Everyday" being a kick ass song anyway.

I hope Rivers comes out with some inspirationally awesome lyrics this time around, but I'm not expecting it.

1. The Good Life
2. Buddy Holly (how has practically nobody mentioned this? Just because it was a big mainstream/MTV hit and got overplayed doesn't change the fact that it's one of the best pop songs ever written)
3. El Scorcho
4. The World Has Turned and Left Me Here

The title line in My Best Friend is somewhat catchy, but the whole song is completely generic. Perfect Situation has a great solo, but I've heard that song so many times that it does nothing for me anymore. Peace is pretty cool, but I couldn't sit through the whole thing. The Damage In Your Heart is all right, but, again, bland. Sorry if I messed up any of the song titles; I haven't really cared for familiarizing myself with them. XD

Are you listening to the same record as I am? Save for two, maybe three songs the rest were great.

Its not really fair to say the lyrics were bad, considering three songs were covers, three were less than one minute, one was a from a record we already have, and two were recorded after 2000. Not considering these, where are the bad lyrics you speak of? Weezer's lyrics have always been simple but deliver extremely well, such as in Lemonade, Chess, Longtime Sunshine, Superfriend, and LITS.

River's voice sounded exactly the same, if not better, than when recording in the studio. The fact that these are demos let him really use his vocals the way he wanted to instead of using them for what he thought people wanted. Examples are TWWLSM (best vocal performance on the album, IMO), the last chorus of Longtime Sunshine, and Who You Callin' Bitch?

What was predictable about these songs? A good majority of new Weezer fans have never heard of SFTBH, and the fact that Rivers dug up these and other demos from so long ago, which we thought he hated, was really suprising. Sure, Superfriend was given, but no one, not even Karl could have predicted The World We Love So Much, a cover by the guy who led the one hit wonder band New Radicals.

In conclusion, sure, it could have been better, but Jesus Christ there are some Weezgasmic moments on this album that you will never hear on something Rivers writes now. Old Weezer fans should buy it to remember the good ol' times, new Weezer fans should buy it so they know what they've been missing, but pretty much everyone else should stay away.

If musicians want my money they should come to my city and play. If I like them I'll buy a shirt as well. I'm not going to pay for 11 notes that have been arranged in a similar fashion hundreds of times unless its under twelve bucks or is really special. Having said that, I own both Blue and Pinkerton.

I love Weezer, blue album is amazing, and i love pinkerton.

I also loves Rivers new solo album, the song "the bomb" is awesome.

Apparently hes writing a book or something of that sort, and as of october 2007 it was at 400 pages, i cant wait for it to come out.

According to Jesse Lacey of Brand New, bands make almost no money off of album sales. They make their money by touring.

Labels make money off album sales, so then they have money to put their band's on tours so they can make money. If the labels don't make money, the bands don't make money and no one has the cash to tour or record.
Everyone thinks labels are some great evil, but if they make no money no one can make money to be able to make music.

Bands on indie labels seem to get along all right with little to no promotion budget. Assuming they're good and people like them of course.

Black Flag did themselves. They were on a self owned label, toured the country, and Europe by themselves.

Bands on indie labels are usually pretty broke, and even a lot of indie labels take money from their bands income to keep the band running.

You can, but you need a LOT of cash from your own pocket, and people have to BUY your music, not download it.

Anyway, get back to Weezer everyone. I can't wait for the next album, even if I don't have a lot of faith in them anymore.

To continue with Black Flag/80's hardcore example, they lived in poverty and ate dog food to survive. They all slept on floors across the world.

With the internet, it is so easy to get your music out there. Bands can rely on themselves to get their music out and build a fan base.

Anyways, I'm more likely to buy an album from a band the isn't signed and is doing things for themselves. I'd actually pay more to support the artist than to support the label.

On topic, I can't wait to hear the new album, but I'm not expecting a lot.

I just mentioned it because it was my first Weezer album. It came out and my cousin had just bought it and I listened to it and fell in love with the band. Now I own them all except the last one. I just never see any praise for it that often, so I thought I'd bring it up. Burndt Jamb is probably one of my favourite Weezer songs ever.

The album's definitely got some great songs on it, but there's also a lot of crap. It's not as bad as Make Believe, but it's also not something I'd want to listen all the way through.

I love pretty much every song on Maladroit. I'm sorry to hear that.

Also, Arthur, are you referring to the movie 21? Because if there's a Weezer song in it I missed it, probably because I was so consumed with the shittiness of the movie.

just kidding. in fact i have almost unshakable faith in this album. but from what i hear of this song it sounds a lot like "we are all on drugs" or an even worse rawkstarrrr-like anthem.
