I like the opener and closer on LG.

Quicksand was awesome, and earth to bella II, well.... had it been coupled with part one, it would have been fine.

I really like the opener for LG. AKTSUO is almost 100% awesomeness. Its only flaw I think is the chorus, I don't think it fits in with the rest of the song, and it sounds a bit contrived, like they felt obligated to have the song title in the lyrics. The verses of that song sound soooo coull though.

Megalomaniac16

^ yeah I agree with that, the only reason I don't like that song much is because of that chourus.

Speaking of singles, does anyone know if they're making a video for Oil and Water?

Edit: Haha, I just heard the body slappage in Paper Shoes, it's very cool. It's so funny picturing them doing that. They should totally recruit two official "chestists" for their live shows :haha.

Megalomaniac16
08-04-2007, 02:49 PM
nah. I was hoping rogues would be a single, but oil and water is good too.

heres a new topic:
every couple albums the Incubus lineup changes=

Fungus (add dj lyfe), S.C.I.E.N.C.E., (drop dj lyfe, add kilmore) make yourself,
morning view, (drop dirk, add ben) ACLOTM, Light grenades

What is the next lineup change? They say they have the strongest lineup they've ever had, but then again they were friends with dirk for like 15 years, so you never know.
I'm kind of hoping for another bassist change...

^Boy, Dirk sounds like a dramatic teenage girl. "I can't stand to see his face" 0_0

It may seem childish now, but from my own experience of practicing/writing 1-3 times a week and gigging 1-2 times a month, I sometimes don't want to talk to some of the members. It takes a while of just straight playing to get over it. My story is meager in comparison to Incubus. They were angsty kids making loud music. Dirk seemed like kind of prick in interviews, too, so I don't really miss him. I like to hear a bassist think outside the box. Dirk did that for the most part on Make Yourself, but aside from Are You In, his basslines weren't as creative as Ben Kenney's.

I dont know... but they have been using less of Kilmore in their songs lately...

>.>

<.<

That is one of the more ignorant posts on this topic, and that's saying a lot. :p:

Kilmore went out and learned a handful of new instruments to add to the band. His DJ work isn't always scratching. If you hear any effects or strange sounds( that aren't Mike's :D ) they are Kilmore. Listen real hard to most of their songs, a lot of the time his sounds make the song much better and would be noticeable if absent.

I had a dream about Mike last night. Nothing dirty though :p:

I was in a classroom with several other students (look like my Living On Your Own class) and Mike just walk in with a small amp and his PRS archtop. Started talking, but I couldn't make out the words. He start playing the opening riff to Anna Molly and I complained how about how it's not Sick Sad Little World. Then after the intro, it shift to the verse riff from Sick Sad Little World and Mike was singing

Then I woke up :( Pretty awesome though it wasn't the first where I dreamt about bands playing.

edit: several hours later, I finally got the Morning View Sessions. I'm going to watch it... right now :p:

So I just saw Incubus last night live 8/10 PNC Arts Center and here the set lists if anyone wants to know.

Quicksand
A kiss to send us off
Wish you where here
Anna Molly
Pistola
Summer Romance
Under My Umbrella
(Band Jam)
Megalomaniac
Drive
Love Hurts
Sick Sad Little World
Cover Song ( I think)
Oil and Water
Dig

encore

Stellar
Punk Drunk
Aqueous Transmission

I'm really sorry I do not know the cover song but it was fun and they were saying lets go crazy a lot, if that helps at all. Pistola had a cool breakdown bridge, Summer Romance was awesome I didn't see that one coming at all, the band jam was cool Mike played this latian style guitar solo very nice :D , Sick Sad had everything, drums solo, bass solo ( I think was the best) and at the end Mike did the solo on the record. I think the show was great they played a lot of light grenades songs but no light grenades.

I was there! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOT THAT CONCERT WAS KILLER! i'd give to get orchestra seats and those meet and greet passes again! :D

I'd say epic is the wrong word... I wouldn't describe something so simple and relaxing as 'epic'. It's an amazing piece of music, but that adjective doesn't sit right with me.

^One of my favourites off of MY. I'm not so keen on that album as everyone else seems to be, but thats one of my favourites.

I think they tried to over-do their diversity on that album, and it didn't gel so well. Even though I like 80% of the songs on there, I'll never listen to it as much as either Morning View or SCIENCE.

^Wow, that's an old quote. Where've you been man?

I don't frequent the site anymore, but I was seeing if you guys were noticing Mike's SG that he's been whipping out during the new tour.

Now you've just gone and topped it, well done ;)

He's entitled to his opinion, no need to take it so seriously and slam it like that

I disagree. On Fungus Amongus, his basslines could have been any funk bassist. They weren't anything new. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. gave me a similar feeling. Make Yourself, I think the whole band was pretty creative, but on Morning View it seemed like the band had talked to him about being less up front and then he just stopped playing anything but a straight bassline(besides Are you In, as I said). Kenney grabs you by the shirt and gets your attention melodically without being up front. I think that's what makes him great. He contributes just as much as Mike melodically and locks himself into Jose without being up front. The only reason you notice Dirk Lance at all is when he slapped(with the exception of Make Yourself). Sure, Sink Beneath the Line sounds bad ass, but Kenney does the same thing without being a showboat. I love funk, don't get me wrong, but Incubus matured and didn't want that kind of bassist anymore. His basslines became superfluous and not as cool as before. He did a great job on Make Yourself, but **I think he wanted to be more up front, but the rest of the band didn't want that.**

**My opinion**

^wow...

I just listened to Glass again, and I want to know: what the hell is the effect Mike uses in the verses? It sort of sounds like a bell or tin can or something.

It's a DOD Gonkulator, a pretty rare Ring Modulator(at least now that they're out of production). He uses it in the intro of Pendulous Threads.

Tom Martin
08-14-2007, 05:02 PM
I completely agree with what you say about Dirk and Kenney... for some reason I've never seen the massive appeal with him that most people had. Sure he was good but he's never amazed me. Ben Kenney has done a fantastic job since he's joined and has contributed to their new sound in a way that Dirk just couldn't have done on the new records.

I saw them at the Jones Beach ampitheater in New York on the 7th or 8th or whenever they played there. That was pretty much their set list. Aqueous Transmission was incredible. I'll agree, A Crow has got some great riffing and guitaring from Mike in general. The only Incubus album that I think has better guitar-work than A Crow is Fungus, and that's just because I'm more into funk than just rock. But Mike is amazing on A Crow, I feel like he's just a bit limited on Light Grenades.

Tom Martin
08-15-2007, 08:49 PM
Well for some reason I feel that Mike is a bit more prominent on Crow than any of the other band memebrs. I can't help but feel that each song is more guitar driven, and then Mike took a bit more of a backseat for LG.

Pearl Peppers
08-15-2007, 09:43 PM
I think the carpal tunnel Mike had hold him back on LG he was making that record in pain.

Yea, he got Carpel tunnel after the album had been released. They were half way into their European tour at the time.

Abe
08-16-2007, 10:36 AM
I think Tom Martin has it right.

All bands do it really, where one member may come to the studio with more ideas that everyone else for a couple of recording/jam sessions, and the end result will be an album led by said band member. That's what probably went on during the ACLOTM I'd say, Mike was probably pissing idea's out when he went to the toilet.

I'm sure some bands do it on purpose too, just to give a little variation in their style like

'Oh hey let's bring up the bass player this album, get him into the limelight, give us a new direction'

Okay haha. Bad example

Kartman
08-16-2007, 11:51 AM
^You can't help but notice that S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is very bass-driven right?

Abe
08-16-2007, 12:28 PM
^Yeah, but it was a bad-example in the sense that, well, would you expect any self-respecting up-his-own-ass arrogant rock frontman to come out with a line like that?

It was just a comment on the general guitarists/singers view of bassists in their bands ;)

Kartman
08-16-2007, 12:31 PM
^Good point, but it seems like Incubus has always had a natural equality between the members. Jose gets his fill of solos as does Ben, and it just seems like they have alot more dominant bass playing than most typical rock groups.

I remember reading in a guitar edge mag about the making of the record and they said mike had to switch the light strings because of carpel tunnel. I think during the tour he finally couldn't take it anymore and had to get something done.

The acronym S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is as enigmatic as the moustachioed man on the cover. The band has given several contradictory meanings for both the album title and the face of "Chuck", whose image also appears on the cover of the Enjoy Incubus EP. It is also speculated that the face on the cover is their 8th grade middle school science teacher whom inspired them. Some of the definitions given are: 'Sailing Catamarans Is Every Nautical Captain's Ecstasy'; 'Smoke Cannabis It Exists Naturally Credit Earth'; 'Southern California's Incubus Enters Nevada Carrying Enstruments'; 'Social Chronology Includes Everyone: Neanderthals, Cannibals, Everyone'.

Edit: NEVERMIND, Wikipedia

"S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was titled as such because the band felt like they were working on a science project whilst creating the album, as such the acronym has no real meaning. Instead the band has chosen to let people interpret the title as they see fit."

By the way, Incubus is amazing live. Their concert was probably better than (dare I say it) RHCP, and they put on a hell of a show. Incubus's concert was better purely for the fact that their sets are so sporadic, you never know what could pop up. With RHCP, you know that they're gonna play Can't Stop, Dani C, Scar Tissue, etc.

You don't need to tell me that, I've seen them 5 times :p:
It's just that when I bought the tickets (for Cardiff) I was originally going to be back home in Somerset. But when they rescheduled the tour it means I'm now going to be at university in Brighton when the gig is on, and I don't really fancy shelling out a £60 train ticket just for that gig... I dunno, I think since you liked A Crow, you'll like Light Greandes, The 2 albums seem pretty similar to me.

Yes, definitely so. Most of the songs off that album could have been singles.

You guys notice that every 2 albums Incubus change their style completely?

FA and S.C.I.E.N.C.E were similar, MY and MV had some similarities and ACLOTM and LG also has some. You guys think that theyre going to go into a whole different direction for the next one?

I think Light Grenades sounds more like Morning View and Make Yourself than ACLOTM. Light Grenades, along with MV and MY, have a very clean sound to them, where ACLOTM is more crunchy and fuzzy. I think ACLOTM is the most unique album they've made so far, really.

Never heard a thing more true in my life. No doubt ACLOTM was very creative, but compared with S.C.I.E.N.C.E., ACLOTM seems almost bland.

I read an article in the paper about it, some people have it made into pill form to take, other purists just cook it and eat it. (for those unaware the placenta is the organ that supplies the fetus with nutrients, and therefore contains many.)
It is supposed to help fight post-mordem depression and all that jazz.

Most people see it for what it really is: disgusting.

ZOMG! That was AMAZING! Some idiot ran up and tried to knock Brandon over, but he didn't succeed, and Brandon just kept singing as if nothing had happened at all. Mike came on for one song with the opening band, and the crowd went absolutely INSANE! When Incubus came on stage, I couldn't even hear myself think. I don't think I'll be able to walk, or talk in the morning from jumping and screaming so much :haha I couldn't help but sing along with every song.

Aqueous Transmission was great live. Overall, the concert was better than album quality.

I missed them when they came to KC in July, it was such bull****. I gave my ticket to my good friend who was going with us because he lost his at the last minute. I thought he needed to see them more than me since I saw them earlier on their club tour last winter, and I saw them on the Crow tour, too. Both equally amazing and all, but hey, he needs to experience that too. Plus he owes me $40 now :D

That being said, I'm kinda glad I didn't go since it was all songs I've heard twice live before (minus The Warmth and Circles DAMMIT). They were set to play Punch Drunk that night but didn't since the crowd was so crazy, they closed with circles instead. They must really dig that song as being a heavy rocker. The Modest Mouse concert made up for this miss though :)

Man, in no time they'll be writing new material all over again, I can't wait...so far away though..

Megalomaniac16

As much as I enjoyed Light Grenades, for their next one I want them to kinda change their sound a little more. I don't think it'll happen, but I think since Morning View they haven't experimented enough. I'm sure it'll be good anyway, but still....

Hmm...I was so into the whole atmosphere that I forget some of the songs they played. I remember Wish You Were Here (Obviously), Dig, Oil And Water, A Kiss To Send Us Off, Stellar, Anna Molly, Drive, a Prince cover, and a song that Brandon said "was never recorded, but was written during the sitting for Light Grenades, so it's kinda new". There were others too..I'll see if I can find the full setlist.

Edit:
Hmm..Brandon must've made a mistake with words. I believe what he meant was that it wasn't on the North American version of Light Grenades. Here's the full setlist.

Quicksand
A Kiss to Send Us Off
Wish You Were Here
Anna Molly
Pistola
Summer Romance
Under My Umbrella
Love Hurts
Drive
Megalomaniac
Sick Sad Little World
Let's Get Crazy (Prince Cover)
Oil And Water
Dig

Stellar
Punchdrunk
Aqueous Transmission

I can kinda understand if bands don't play their older stuff. They probably get sick of playing the songs all the time and rather play their newer stuff more frequently. Especially Incubus, they've been going for about 16 years, could you imagine playing a Fungus song every time you play a show? I think they just want to keep it fresh.
