;) If he gets any London UK dates post tour, I'm happy to bring some people along.

And hand out flyers in Camden Town. That'd really get the numbers up.

That said, I'm not partial to the flyer he has on his myspace. I don't advocate mass murder.

OK so he is coming to Northern VA. I'll work on finding him somewhere. I'll message you when I figure something out.

DIY show spaces, no clubs most likely... Basements, Skateparks, Bathrooms whatever is welcome.

a few clarifications would help:

1) does he have his own PA with him, or does one need to be provided?does he need one at all?
2) does he need support bands/artists or is he comfortable with carrying a full show
(about 2 hours worth of tunes) by himself?
3) what sort of compensation is he looking for?in other words; how much does he expect to be paid, or is he willing to play for meals and drinks and perhaps also a place to crash for the night?
4) is he a solo performer, or does he have other musicians travelling with him.does he have anyone at all travelling with him. (this is especially relevant when looking for a place to crash, as is wether or not he's a smoker/and/or drinker)
5) is audience size a factor?is he ok with a small gig in someones backyard with maybe 15-30 people there?

that's a few things to consider. let us know what the deal is with those things. i'm sure i can set up a few things for him, but those 5 things i listed would sure help me out in finding places for him.

thanks, I'll send all those questions to him!

I've never done anything like this before so it'll be good practice for my tour next summer with DS-DS.

after 26 years of doing this, these are the MINIMAL things i've learned to ask/give info about.
i think it's great that you are doing this, and much success to you. when we started out we didn't have this knowledge or people readily able to supply such things---we just had to wing it and learn the hard way.
hopefully my small list will help out in some way or another for you on this and future endeavors.

EDIT: i should also mention that gas money is ALWAYS a factor!what type of transportation is he using, and will he need a few bucks for gas at the end of the night?

whyvern
04-03-2006, 05:44 PM
yeah, he's planning on having a van with a matress in it for nights when he can't find somewhere to stay, I'm not too sure what kind of van he's going to have, but I figure a usual tank of gas for my truck when I was traveling was around 60 dollars and I got a little more than 300 miles per tank, so if he gets at least 12 people at each of his shows he should make all the drives, of course food is a bit too.

Answers from the man himself to the questions:

1) do you have his own PA with him, or does one need to be provided?does he need one at all?

I'm travelling light, so no I won't have a PA, just my guitar and a lead. On the upside it's just me and my guitar and in a small room, as long as it's quiet, I can cope without amplification. And again, all the amplification I would need would be an amp for my guitar and maybe one for my vox (and a mic to go with it, though I may bring a mic of my own, but I wouldn't have a stand for it).

2) do you need support bands/artists or is he comfortable with carrying a full show
(about 2 hours worth of tunes) by himself?

2 hours is pushing it a bit, and generally speaking I would be more comfortable with a support act. My headline slot would probably be an hour at the most, I reckon any more than that would get too tedious for words. I can just go straight on, especially if it's a house party or something similar, but even then I don't think more than an hour at a time is a good idea.

3) what sort of compensation are you looking for?in other words; how much do you expect to be paid, or are you willing to play for meals and drinks and perhaps also a place to crash for the night?

Compensation's a funny way of putting it! I honestly don't mind what I get for playing. If there's money taken on the door, unless its a charity do, then I would like a modest portion of it. Places to stay would be very welcome in lieu of some or all payment, and meals and drinks would also be very welcome. I'm going to be selling CDs too, so hopefully that could supplement my income. If it's entirely a cash based thing I would think that $35-$45 isn't unreasonable. But please make it clear to everyone you talk to that I am really not fussed about the money and I would much rather play for room, board and beer.

4) is are a solo performer, or do you have other musicians travelling with him. do you have anyone at all travelling with him. (this is especially relevant when looking for a place to crash, as is wether or not you're a smoker/and/or drinker)

I don't plan on taking anyone with me for the whole trip, although picking stragglers up on the way isn't out of the question I won't impose anyone I happen to collect on the way on anyone who has offered me a place to stay. And also having been brought up in the rough streets of yorkshire I do both drink and smoke - though I assure you I'm a very pleasent drunk, I don't like to drink til I puke and I haven't got a problem with non-smoking houses unless they try to nail me to the wall and stuff my face full of nicorette gum.

5) is audience size a factor? are you ok with a small gig in someones backyard with maybe 15-30 people there?

As with the payment thing, I'm not in this to make myself famous. If you can get five people to sit down and pay attention to me for the duration of my set I'm happy. I'd far rather play in front of 30 people who are all friends, out to have a good time and am interested in what I have to say than play in front of 200 piss artists who shout over my lyrics.

Newfoundland looks like quite a long drive but instead of going to New Hampshire twice (which sounds like a bad idea now that I look at it) that might be the best idea.

Travel sized, you should have your band open for him as well, I think he'll take any band that wants to play with him open for him.

Ehh.

I can't think of any other places right now... It isn't as corporate as it seems. for one, it's pretty little and they let just about anyone play. The wailers played once, and they know better than to play at a badly corporate place...

Not my descision though.

The Garage band the Wailers or the Reggae band? Because I've seen the Reggae band at a big corporate radio rock festival here (and I coulda seen the Pink Spiders when they were good for like 2 bucks instead) and they weren't very good, but the garage band was one of the first independent artists ever.

My mom went to that university...she's Jewish, and they asked her to see her horns. ****ing disgusting. (I'm not making a generalization about people from that area, just those particular people that said that to her. Sorry if I offended you, Dylan.)

Anyway, there's a place here in my town called Schoolhouse Green that would be an awesome place to have a show, but I don't know if they would allow it. Actually, they probably would, it's not like anyone gives a **** what goes on there (I've smoked many "questionable substances" there). It just couldn't be too loud. They have a gazebo there too, he could like perform in it. It's basically just an open field though.

PM or email me if you're interested.
