I would say the original version of 'Hurt' or the stripped down version of 'Something I Can Never Have' by NIN, 'Street Spirit' by Radiohead, possibly Barber's 'Adagio for Strings' or the first movement of Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata'.

One by Metallica lol? At least the video is pretty sad. "What is democracy?" "I believe has something to do with men killing each other"

Million Miles away by Hanoi Rocks, maybe not sad, but very emotional IMO.

NoLeafMetal

Agree with Izz, though "One" isn't Metallica's saddest. That would be "Until it Sleeps" or "Fade to Black". Also, I don't believe young_is_god meant anything homophobic with his attack on the James Blunt, he was just implying that "Goodbye my lover" is not so much a song as it is a clichè.

I just thought of a VERY sad song. I don't remember who it is by and if anyone knows feel free to post it. But the song is called strange fruit. Its by this black jazz singer in the 1930s that speaks out about the linching of black people.

Hmmm... i wouldn't call any songs sad. If a song aims to be saddening then i think that's just bad music that you shouldn't waste your time listening to.

However, if a song is meant to move you, then that's a diffrent story. Here's my personal favourites. (in order)

-"Lenny" by SRV. Undoubtfully the most heartfelt piece of music that i've ever listened to . He dosn't even need to sing to make it incredibly moving, that's emotion.

-"Coyotes" by Don Edwards. This is a fairly unknown country tune, but it's so simple and beautiful it gets me every time.

-"Green Spandex" by Xavier Rudd. (only the live version from the "Good Spirit" disc) The energy and passion in this song is mind-blowing. Every time i listen to it i litterally just feel the rest of the world fall away. It's also fairly unknown, so you might have a hard time finding it.

I'm sure there's a few others but none of them leap to mind like those 3.

Cheers
-Falcatarius

OMG the saddest song in the history of the world has to be "One" by Metallica. Funny cuz I was listening to it as I read this thread! It is of course based on the WWI book "Johnny Got His Gun". you all know the story! Yeah so this guy is this average dude enjoying his life when he goes to war...sees corpses fly and all that crazy sh*t. Then he gets bombed while fighting in a trench... his whole unit is wiped out except for him. He's semi-conscious as he senses that his arms and legs are amputated one by one. He later discovers that his face has been blown off. He has no eyes, no mouth, no nose. He cant communicate with the world and has no idea where he is. Dude all I can say is read the book.

For me I would say that some of the saddest songs would be:
Gone Away - The Offspring
Adam's Song - Blink 182
Untitled - Simple Plan
Lagrimas - JD Natasha
Nickel Creek - A Lighthouse Tale
I Won't See You Tonight (part 1) - Avenged Sevenfold
There's A Fine, Fine Line - Avenue Q (The Musical)
Breaking Benjamin - Forget It
Coheed And Cambria - Wake Up
Radios In Heaven - Plain White T's
Guns And Roses - November Rain
Jack Johnson - If I Could
Any James Blunt Song (except Alright Tonight)
Simple And Clean - Utada Hikuru (Kingdom Hearts)

I could go on and on...but I think that's enough...

Cure My Tragedy(a Letter to God) & Rain Song --COLD

If you know the stories behind these two, you'll never listen to them the same way again. The first was written while Cold's singer's sister was so sick with cancer that doctors were only giving her a few months to live. The other was about two friends of his who were burned alive in an apartment fire.

Metallica- One
deep purple- lalena, april. In fact most of the songs on their self-titled album, which happens to be my favourite album of all time.
Velvet Acid Christ- She Bleeds Red, Repulsive (necropolis mix), some parts off Phucking Phreak, Timeless Visions
Wumpscut- Thorns (distant vocals version) very sad, very ethereal sounding. So is Angel. Turns off Pain (Recommended Version) also.
Skinny puppy- Testure, and the very beautiful Cult
Bauhaus- she's in parties, Hollow Hills, Silent Hedges. Probably more but I forget. ah yes
The Cure- A LOT of their songs, right now Siamese Twins comes to mind. Most of the songs on Pornography, and lets not forget Pictures of You

Rage Against the Machine's version of "Beautiful World" is extremely sad. The lyrics are upbeat and positive, but whaen combined with a depressing chord progeression and that style of singing, the happiness of it seems horribly sarcastic. "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden is pretty sad, too, as well as "Everchanging" by Rise Against.

You Don't Know How It Feels by Tom Petty is tremendously sad. One of the reasons I admire Petty is his quiet confidence - he doesn't put himself down, or wallow in his misery in his songs. He always has self esteem without being egotistical. However, in this song he really puts himself out there and paints a very sad image of himself. It's already a sad song, but being a fan, in the context of his other work it is particularly powerful.

If anyone here likes Irish and Scottish music there's a whole host of sad songs. The one that gives me lump in my throat is "Grace" To understand the song I'll give you the background.

When Grace Gifford, the sister-in-law of Tomas MacDonagh, picked Easter Sunday 1916 as the date on which she was to marry Joseph Plunkett she had obviously no idea of the tragic events ahead of them.
Days before the planned wedding Joseph Plunkett, who suffered his entire life under respiration troubles, was admitted to the hospital and underwent an emergency operation.
On Easter Monday 1916, the day after the postponed wedding, Plunkett manned his post in the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin to take part in the Easter Rising.

After the surrender of the rebels Joseph Plunkett was arrested and imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol. Just hours before his execution on 4 May 1916 he married Grace Gifford in the jail chapel with two prison guards as witnesses.

Now here's the song.

As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Jail
I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed?
From our school days they have told us we must yearn for liberty
Yet all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me

Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Now I know it's hard for you my love to ever understand
The love I bare for these brave men, the love for my dear land
But when Pádraic called me to his side down in the GPO
I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go

Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Now as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking too
On this May morn as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you
And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know
I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose.

Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
For we must say goodbye
