That's interesting that you bring that up yogi... for me I find myself skipping it quite often... but only because it seems too perfect of an opening. Haha, I'm actually serious about that too. It's like sometimes I want to hear some Kid A, but as more of a just casual couple of songs... And I think Everything In Its Right Place fits too well for me to choose it as one of them.

Speaking of Kid A, I used to hate Optimistic (because I'm a pessimist? <_< >_>) but recently it's grown to be one of my favourites from it.

After searching around the web for a while, I finally managed to find In Rainbows WITH the second disc, without it being the discbox (with the vinyl and artwork and stuff). Supposedly it's being exported from Japan to California, and then it's being sent over to Holland where I live.

Yeah, I love Last Flowers. Can't recall 4 Minute Warning though. Only listened to Disc 2 like once (Except for Last Flowers, I've listened to that plenty of times), when I downloaded it. Would be a great addition to my collection. Although it does mean I'm gonna have disc one twice. Ah well.

I doubt it. There were only so many that were produced, and if I remember correctly that number was quite small.
I have a discbox - got it when it was released. It is beautiful. And it was so inexpensive for what it is.

This. Down Is The New Up really is a masterpiece. And the second disk kind of gives you a new perspective on the first. Not sure how to describe it.
The first disc is pretty organic, spontaneous, mellow, polished. A little more lighthearted than what they usually put out.
The second disc is a little more calculated, raw, cynical.
But they compliment each other brilliantly.

Nice, I didn't know that there was a Radiohead thread on UG. Anyways, really amazing band. Their music is completely unique and they are so great live. I mean I've never seen them live and I'd love too, but I've watched tonnes of their concerts on YouTube and they seem to really get into the music. Every album has a different sense to it. Pablo Honey - more rocky stuff. Then The Bends which is kinda more alternative. OK Computer more experimental and more of a concept album. Kid A, really experimental and had new kinds of sounds from Radiohead. Amnesiac, one of my favourites, like Kid A was more experimental. Then Hail to the Thief, a kind of return to the alternative rock the band played and then In Rainbows which is an album with yet again a different sound from Radiohead.
See this is why I find Radiohead's music so good: every album a bit different so you can truly experience a huge array of music. I really do hope they make another album. Brilliant band.

Wow.
The estimate for the delivery on my order was somewhere between the third of September and the third of October.
I got it today. Hell yeah! The japanese version of In Rainbows, including Disc 2! That does however mean I now have two disc ones, but who cares! I'm a big fan so I really wanted Disc 2 without the vinyl and artwork and stuff. I'd still like a few of the earlier EPs though. Guess I'll look around for those. I'll post some pics later.

Where did you find that?
On a side note, I've started to appreciate The Present Tense. I remember not having the patience to listen to it when I first saw the video of the Latitude version. But now I think it has MASSIVE potential for the full band version. Goddamn I can't wait for the new CD.
On another side note, I just ordered a couple more Radiohead things. The Itch EP, the Japanese Knives Out single (why Japanese? Because there are five tracks on it, Knives Out, Cuttooth, Worrywort, Fog and Life in a Glass House full length version) and the Pyramid Song single. Can't wait for them! They are second hand but they are supposedly in mint condition. My Radiohead collection (sort of, I don't plan on owning every single thing they put out, I just want all or most of their tracks) is coming along nicely.

Phil's solo album? thoughts? discussion?
rather inconsequential, if you ask me. however, while listening to it, it is fairly enjoyable and i'm sure that if i were typing this while listening, i'd have a much more positive reaction. drifts to the background much too easily and a good chunk of the songs wind up sounding the same.
sort of unfortunate because "The Ties That Bind Us" and "By Some Miracle" are legitimately good tunes.
perhaps too early to judge. i'm sure that i'll go back to it another couple times, if only because it is Phil and he seems so likable.

agreed, it's unfortunate. I think they are good tunes although I think he's too used to his role in radiohead of being a support and not necessarily main focus. It's a difficult to change that kind of mindset. I found the songs to all be fairly decent to great, but I think that some of them stick while others definitely don't.
I would be interested to see if he makes another solo album. I think it might be better because he could learn to be a little more comfortable in his own skin and maybe refine his songwriting a little more

I think Pablo Honey is a pretty good album. You, Creep, Thinking About You, Stop Whispering and Blow Out are all very solid tracks if you ask me. I have to say I like it better than Amnesiac. Don't really care that much for that album except 2 or 3 tracks tops.
SugarRush66
08-28-2010, 02:26 PM
Yeah, that's roughly how I feel except there are a few more Radiohead albums than just Amnesiac that I prefer PH to. And Creep is actually one of my least favourite songs on the album, with Thinking being the best - it shows that they can write really good "conventional" songs along with all their more outre stuff

I guess Pablo Honey is okay. It just doesn't really sound like Radiohead. I could easily place it with Blur, The Stone Roses and Oasis. I guess I could say the same about The Bends, but with The Bends you can kind of tell they are going somewhere.
SugarRush66

Totally agree, I can't stand the elitist Radiohead fans who think Radiohead is pure divinity in aural form, and everything else is shit to them. i'm kind of past Radiohead, i think. after almost seven years where unquestioningly i would have called them my favorite band, i don't think that is the case anymore. i looked at my lastfm stats and over the past year, i only listened to just over 100 Radiohead tracks.
it is a very strange realization because such a large chunk of my life has been dominated by this one band and now...i don't know.
i still eagerly await LP8 dropping and i've been following a chunk of the other related news, but i'm no longer going out of my way to read every interview or article that pops up. i hardly even go out of my way to listen to them.
maybe it is just time for a break and my lack of diehard devotion at this moment will make LP8 all the better when it comes out.

Yeah happens to everyone really, I went from The White Stripes to Radiohead over about a three year period and before that it was Placebo in my much younger days.
Every now and then I go back and revisit some White Stripes material and feel all nostalgic as they did take up a large part of my time but yeah there was never any real staying power and I only really went back for those reasons of nostalgia.
It's discomforting really, knowing I will probably end up doing the same thing to Radiohead a band that I've never swayed from.

I have the library book version of 'Amnesiac' - my favourite Radiohead album - which is rather cool but just the standard 'Kid A'.
Went on a small learning spree of Radiohead the other week learning 'Paranoid Android', 'My Iron Lung', 'Just' and 'Fake Plastic Trees' - and already knew 'Karma Police' and 'Knives Out'. Want to come up with an acoustic version of 'Packt like sardines...' at some point but I think the drums and deranged sounds are what make the song.
They've unexpectedly given me a greater appreciation of The Beatles as well.

I went to a Radiohead concert some years ago. It was the single most coolest show I have ever been too. I have seen Oasis, Pearl Jam, The Ramones, Elliott Smith, Hank Williams Jr., Rock Fest in Dallas that had about 300,000 people and lasted 3 days with Bush, Sugar Ray, Jewel, Counting Crowes, Collective Soul, The Wallflowers, and others.
Radiohead was at Dallas Music hall. Every fan and all the people were the best. I actually walked to the front of the stage watched a few songs and then went to get a beer. I made my way back to the front of the stage without any pushing or shoving or aggression. I remember Bill, the owner of Bill's Records and Tapes, old and bald standing there in awe.
I was so lit up I cannot tell you a single song they sang. But I still have a vision of Thom Yorke standing there with his acoustic, and cool every loving soul was in that place.
You wont find that at many other concerts. Oasis used to have a crowd of backward hatted frat boys and assholes. Polar opposite.
Now I am looking forward to Roger Waters Nov 21. I bet it will be similar.

I've yet to see Radiohead live and I hope it will definitely top all the other concert experiences I've had. So far I'd say the Red Hot Chili Peppers were the best concert I've been to, probably because the crowd was amazing as well. I've seen Muse live too and the crowd wasn't energetic enough if you ask me. Kinda sad. RHCP weren't playing their best game but they still managed to get 60000 people going nuts. If I ever get to see Radiohead live, I hope the atmosphere will be so damn amazing.

Anyone else think Amnesiac doesn't get the praise it deserves? I think it's probably down to it being released so soon after Kid A, the reaction to that album was mental, it's almost as if Amnesiac slipped under the radar. Anyway it's a great album, Pyramid Song, Knives Out, I Might Be Wrong, You And Whose Army, some of their best work imo. I think you can pick out certain songs from Amnesiac, whereas with Kid A you really need to listen to it from start to finish to really appreciate it. Love them both though! Hail to the Thief had a few tracks which bored me, but There There and Myxomatosis are 2 of my favourite Radiohead songs.
Oh and I also think In Rainbows is amazing, as much as I love the Kid A-Hail to the Thief period, it was great to see them just chill out and have some fun, they really sound like they're enjoying themselves on that record. Bodysnatchers - what a tune!
And I really don't need to tell anyone how great The Bends and OK Computer are. Let's just forget about Pablo Honey! :D

I want to get in to Radiohead. What album would you guys recommend as a good starting point?
I would say definitely start with The Bends, because it probably has some of the most mainstream songs. Then ease your way into the more experimental stuff with OK Computer and finally end up at Kid A

No. The Bends isn't representative for Radiohead's style at all. The songs are much more poppy/indie, while the rest of their albums is more experimental rock. I'd start with OK Computer, then go to In Rainbows and buy the other albums later.
Also, +1 on Amnesiac. Probably my favourite. I Might Be Wrong is definitely one of my favourite songs by Radiohead.

What album is "representative" of their style then? They all sound totally different to me, Radiohead wrote The Bends, its reflective of their style because they wrote it, I cant think of a better album to start with, its a great mix of catchyness and depth

Thom>> Yeah. `Cause that’s where it goes into a space of its own. The central point, because we separate like ripples on a blank shore, it’s… that that’s the center. Everything’s leading to that point then going away from that point.
Steve>> So literally it’s quite like dropping the pebble in a pool?
Thom>> For me anyway, yeah. And then I tell you what though. We did something, we were talking to somebody this morning, and there’s all these mad theories on the net, I mean I don’t… you know, I’m not one of these people who ever reads them, but someone read one out to me. It’s all about 10s, and apparently mathematically that is the center point.
Ed>> Isn’t it the golden section theory?
Thom>> Yeah, the Golden Section Theory. So if you’re really, really, really, really stuck for something to do, you could always read up about that.
Steve>> So coming back to the … I don’t know whether it’s something to do with continuity but I mentioned that we were talking about the album to one of your mega-fans, and she was saying actually that this is the first Radiohead record which works on shuffle.
Thom>> Oh really?
Ed>> That’s cool.
Thom>> I’m glad we wasted those two weeks putting it together! *laughter*

In no way am I condoning or suggesting that you should download illegal content, but I just might be insinuating that you would perhaps enjoy listening to "Towering Above the Rest." I vaguely remember my mother reading me a South Korean folktale about thieves, attack crows, and people turning into trees, but that was when I was a child, and I don't know enough Korean to go look it up.
Gut instinct tells me there are a lot of folk tales/short stories across several cultures dealing with that same subject matter, but perhaps with different details. A quick google search didn't turn up anything, and Wikipedia has nothing to say about the ending of the music video.
Really curious to see what it is now, though...

Radiohead's one of those bands whose music needs to be listened to as an album in order to get the full effect. Those are all fantastic songs, but they're even better in the context of their respective albums. I really recommend giving the full albums a whirl! You definitely won't regret it.

+1, The Best Of was just EMI/Capitol squeezing a couple last few bucks out of a departing Radiohead. A couple years before they were asked about a greatest hits CD and they joked about a "greatest hits EP with four tracks and three covers," as Colin said.

Thing is, I'm probably going to order the newspaper thing. I don't have a record player but I was thinking about purchasing one anyway. 36 euros isn't too bad if you take into account all the things that come along with it.
One thing that bothers me though, there are two vinyls that come with the newspaper. But there are supposedly only 8 tracks. Maybe that means there are two parts to the album like In Rainbows Disc 1 and 2. Though I don't know much about vinyls so I don't know how much music could fit on a 10". Another possibility would be that the tracks are quite lengthy, but I don't really see that happening.

guys you are aware that the deluxe newspaper thing includes a physical CD too?
Radiohead's new record, The King Of Limbs, is presented here as the world's first* Newspaper Album, comprising:
•Two clear 10" vinyl records in a purpose-built record sleeve.
•A compact disc.
•Many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork and a full-colour piece of oxo-degradeable plastic to hold it all together.
•The Newspaper Album comes with a digital download that is compatible with all good digital media players.
•The Newspaper Album will be shipped on Monday 9th May 2011 you can, however, enjoy the download on Saturday 19th February 2011.
•Shipping is included in the prices shown.

I actually think it would be cool if it was 8 tracks and 36ish minutes long. It would be much easier to sit down and enjoy it that way. Plus, we all know that they wouldn't release something that felt incomplete. Sure that means less material, but quality over quantity, right?

I would find it quite odd that they're charging over eight dollars for it if it ends up being 8 4-5ish minute tracks...
Not that I'd mind paying a little extra for Radiohead, just seems uncharacteristic.
I'm hoping the tracks are longer than usual if this 8 track theory is true. I'd love to see that from them.

Supposedly they Tweeted something in Japanese.
Radiohead’s new album The King Of Limbs will be available in just two days from now, Saturday February 19th. But is there anything else we can expect?
The band just sent out a tweet with a mysterious Japanese text: 渋谷 ハチ公広場 金曜日 18時59分, which translates as ‘Hachiko Square Shibuya, Friday 18:59′, referring to the square in Tokyo, Japan. Depending on the translation, it could be something at 18:59 hours this Friday at that square or 59 minutes on Friday the 18th. Is it an announcement on one of the square screens, a webcast, a surprise show or are Radiohead just giving us something to do? A show in Japan has already been ruled out by Radiohead’s management. Go ahead and speculate…
I know Radiohead put a lot of thought in their art, so it wouldn't surprise me if they would announce something there that would blow us away.

Lotus Flower: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfOa1a8hYP8
After having been told that Radiohead’s The King Of Limbs will be released tomorrow we just received this email from XL.
NEW ALBUM “THE KING OF LIMBS” IS NOW AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD AND A NEW VIDEO IS RELEASED
Radiohead have brought forward the digital release of their new album “The King Of Limbs” by 24 hours with the album now being sent to those who pre-ordered it earlier this week. It is also available for new orders through www.radiohead.com at a fixed price of £6. A special edition is also available.
With everything ready on their website, the band decided to bring forward the release by a day rather than wait until the planned date of Saturday, Feb 19 to deliver the music.
A video for the track “Lotus Flower” can now be seen on YouTube. Click HERE
Orders for the download or the special edition, which is packaged in Radiohead’s version of a newspaper, can still be placed at radiohead.com
XL Recordings will be releasing the album on CD and vinyl on March 28.

I think this just might be the most slow-burning grower of an album that Radiohead has ever put out.

last 4 songs > first 4 songs
My thoughts exactly!
Only listened once through so far, but for me the first 4 songs were blurred into the same mid-fast tempo, hi-hat dominated, awkward time signature, electronic sort of mess.
Hopefully I will find it easier to differentiate between those tunes and pick out the strong points of each track on future listens. Can't help but feel if it wasn't Radiohead then I would have no interest in doing so though!
Lotus Flower actually drew my attention for being a really decent tune with a followable structure to it.
Codex is my initial favourite, I love the ethereal quality to it, recognisably Radiohead but still something new and fun to listen to.
Give Up The Ghost is the first song that the guitar really stands out to me, in a Jigsaw or Reckoner sort of way, I look forward to playing along with it.
Agree about the line in Separator "If you think this is over then you're wrong" pointing to a second release sometime soon, particularly when you look at the title again.
Overall a little disappointed but to be fair that's normally the case with Radiohead for me since OK Computer, it's a good effort which I'm sure has hidden gems to find when I relisten... now!
