The usual, dnb and dubstep. House continues to bore me and trance for the most part continues to make me cringe. That can be rectified though if someone hooks me up with some decent trance that doesnt include female vocals singing about how she loved someone or something cliche like that

Try to catch one of Fez's mixes on krankydigital. I've moved away from trance for the same reason, and he (and Filo and Peri's podcasts) are still good to me. Also, psytrance > commercial trance.

yeah alek is a gun. i take it you've heard that finrg are giving away all of their mp3 releases for free in the new year? so epic.

I'm interested in honorable mentions, O Raving Deity of UG. I don't know many of those by name though :p: Just 4 and 8, both of which I , the former of which doubly so.
most should be on youtube, if they aren't let me know and i'll probably be able to upload them for listening purposes :)

i'll post some honourable mentions for you when i have more time hehe.

hardstyle of course :) also i've just listened to the samples from my friend stana's upcoming release on therabyte, and am quite impressed with them. the genre is techstyle, check it out if ya want:

Ok I'm going to admit that I know basically nothing about these genres, but I've been trying to find some to listen to. I wanna find something with a super intense beat and sound, not like the happy kind of stuff. I've tried daft punk and some of the bands listed on here, but haven't really found anything I like too much. Any suggestons?

Sorry I know this is really vague and all, but I'll give a big hug to anyone who helps me find something :D .

EDIT: After looking at some more stuff on here, finrg and Alek Szahala are the closest I've found to what I'm looking for. So if you guys could tell me what some of the most intense bands along those lines are, that would be great.

If you're looking for freeform (that's the genre here), I'll go ahead and leave this here.

DJ RX - Codex 4 (http://media.finrg.com/music/DJ_Rx_-_Codex_4.mp3)

Really, really good freeform mix. You might look into hardcore as well, though a lot of what you'll find is happy hardcore, which is NOT what you're looking for. Cheese everywhere. Might have a look at Euro hard trance and hard house/NRG, maybe hardstyle (ahem, divid3d) as well.

btw, in case anyone is interested, my top 10 hardstyle tracks of 2009 is as follows (in no particular order):

01. Geck-o & Sinith - Full Force (Full Mix)
02. Tatact - Taaac! (Renato Mix)
03. Brainkicker - That's My Name
04. Cally & Juice - You Don't Know Me (DJ Activator Remix)
05. Alphaverb - Got It! (Unoriginal Mix)
06. Hardstyle Mafia - Boom & Blast
07. Likquid - C'mon 2009 (Brainkicker Remix)
08. Tat & Zat - Skeleton
09. Carnifex meets Rephex - The Sound of 2004
10. Geck-o - Next (Prullenbak Mix)

i had about 50 tracks on my shortlist so it was pretty hard to narrow it down, but i think these tracks have floated my boat the most :p: i might post some honourable mentions later if anyone is keen for more.

This is awesome! I've been browsing the thread for some new hardstyle to listen to and I hadn't heard most of the tracks on this list (my knowledge of hardstyle is pretty limited) so thank you very much for posting these :) I'd be keen to hear some of the honorable mentions as well :D

have you tried to log in? there was a problem with emails not being sent to people when their accounts were validated. if you can't log in, tell me your username and i'll ask the admin about it.

btw all of the forums (global hardstyle, hardcore, hard trance and hard techno) were partially merged recently, so some forums (country forums, off topic areas) are shared between all four sites, and the genre-specific subforums are unique to each portal (so if you use globalhardstyle.com the new releases section and common chat etc that you see are just hardstyle related).

ok here are some general properties that should help you distinguish hardstyle from nustyle (although hardstyle tracks will often use a couple of nu elements these days and vice versa, which make things harder to categorise, but this should give you an overview):

hardstyle:
- hard kicks (they have depth to them, a nice proper 'thud').
- reverse bass is common (a type of bassline used offbeat to the kicks that makes a nice 'vwoom' sound - well that's how i describe it anyway lol).
- screeches are common (high pitched 'screeching' sounds that are used as a lead), particularly in italian hardstyle.
- many tracks do not have a melody (they could have other lead noises instead such as screeches, beeps, whatever other noises instead of a proper synthy melody), and when a melody is used it's often quite simple in structure and not particularly uplifting.
- often tracks have dark themes/atmosphere.

nustyle:
- hollow/flat, metallic sounding kicks (commonly referred to as 'toks' because that's what they sound like).
- much less usage of reverse bass, it's sometimes in the intro/outro but very rarely in a climax.
- pitched bass (the basslines change in pitch, so it can sort of sound like "BUNG BUNG BUNG BUNG, BONG BONG BONG BONG" if that makes any sense at all lol)
- less screech.
- more melodies, happier/cheesier melodies, more complex melodies (often using triplets of notes).
- often use very long or frequent breaks, often with a spoken vocal or piano melody (hardstyle does use breaks too, but not to the same extent as nu).
- tracks often have a happy vibe about them.
- often less percussion is used (hi hats etc).

now some explanations of some the above...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP2DEu3PFTI (hardstyle)
the first things you hear are a hardstyle kick and a typical reverse bassline. the vocal later on even describes them for you :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWqxVWSodZk (hardstyle)
more nice reverse bass from 0:41. screeches start at 1:07 and are prominently used throughout the track.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIEEY1cWWq8 (hardstyle)
another example of screech (the screeches start at about 0:27 and are used prominently throughout the track, more obviously from 1:00 onwards).

those tracks above depict the general sound of hardstyle from 2003-2007 (there is earlier stuff but those years were when hardstyle really came into it's own as a genre). a lot of it is quite simple, especially the italian stuff as shown above.

modern hardstyle from around 2006 onwards is often more complex and detailed, it does contain more melodies than tracks from the past and less screeches, it sometimes uses pitched bass in small amounts, etc, but you will find that most of the kicks used are nice and hard, reverse bass is still used pretty often, and most tracks definitely don't have a happy la-la hands in the air sort of vibe about them haha :p:

some examples of modern hardstyle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYz6HzTRZEY (2006)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T_jVjhk5Ss (2009)

around this period, nustyle started to emerge though. at first tracks just started to have more hollow kicks for example, but eventually it developed into an entirely new style, far removed from the hardstyle it came from.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7UGfk1B1sE (nustyle)
the difference in the way the kicks sound should be obvious throughout the sample. the cheesy melody speaks for itself also. honestly this crap makes me feel like i'm in a circus or an ice cream van or something, i can't stand it :haha:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MZhf-3h8_c (nustyle)
long boring break with lame spoken vocals and piano. at around 2:52 onwards you hear pitched bass and hollow kicks. then another damn break. the only redeeming feature of this rubbish for me is the reverse bass in the intro and outro.

there are some hardstyle tracks which do use quite a few nustyle elements yet still retain their hardness. here's an example from 2008 which has hardstyle kicks and reverse bass, yet a break with piano and a fairly cheesy vocal part, a bit of pitched bass, and an uplifting melody:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sipY14NfcC8
personally i love this track. it shows that you can be happy without sounding like a bunch of clowns dancing in a circus, simply by retaining harder kicks and basslines.

here's a hardstyle track from 2009 with slightly more hollow kicks than usual in some parts, and a very complex melody with triplets of notes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6kEerN7hjM
epic choon imo because despite the less than ideal kicks, it's still hard and not lame.

and a banging hardstyle track with a piano break and some hollow kicks (which actually sound pretty good when coupled with distorted bass in this case imo):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVEV57R-zCM

and here's an example of a nustyle track from 2009 which uses hardstyle elements (reverse bass, hard kicks in the intro/outro, and screeches), but has a ridiculous amount of breaks with spoken vocals and a really long break in the middle, and a climax full of tokky kicks (4:10 onwards):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2I1_SlXXAA
i like the reverse bass, and the screeches are ok, but overall i think this track sucks as all the breaks kill the energy, the vocal is lame and annoying, and i can't stand all the toks.

now it probably sounds like i hate all nustyle, but actually i don't. here's some good nu stuff according to me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvk_8_OFz7U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_L-j5653p4

... but i'll never like nu more than my precious hardstyle so i'll end on some more examples of the evolution of hardstyle using tracks i love ^_^

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_ljyINYpik (2000, when it was just starting to emerge from hard trance and whether or not particular tracks are hard trance or hardstyle could be debated for years...)

compare any of that stuff to just about anything by nustyle artists such as headhunterz, frontliner, scope dj, etc and you should hear the differences i described above.

i've probably just confused you further tbh :haha: sorry for rambling and not really having any structure to this post :p: feel free to ask for clarification or more examples. clearly i don't mind taking the time to try to explain this stuff to people hahaha.

Yeah, the free UltraMixer because that's the best I can do. I'm listening to it myself now, and it's painfully apparent how limiting it is to not be able to fiddle with the EQ with two hands rather than one cursor. Every time a song ends the bass just flattens until I can get to boosting the new one. :(

SHEdit unrelated.

The second UG Electronic Album will be released very, very soon, everybody! Be on the lookout for it in the Pit. I'll post a link here when captaincrunk makes the thread.

Electronic Album II.

Catfood: I'ma rerecord it (again. The first go ended up with my mouse clicking itself and stopping the music, who knew?) and try to not have dead bass when new tracks take over. Here's the tracklisting I have now though. Starts more hardcore-ish, goes freeform, about 45 minutes. Not too long. It might change a bit but not much.
Carbon Based - Tuonela
Substanced - Freeform Mercury
DJ RX - Frozen Flame ()
Horzi - The Elegy
Alek Szahala - Iron Squid
Pain on Creation - Lush
DJ RX - Lacrima

[b]divid3d: Yeah, I plan to buy some CDJs one of these days. I'd go turntables but the prospects of me having vinyls ever are kinda dim. It's a long way off in the future though. I'm not serious about DJing as in making my living from it, but I do enjoy the hell out of it, and would like to do it properly. The problem is I'm gonna be at uni for the next 3-4 years yet, and money's a bitch. I am hoping to get a MIDI controller for my birthday this March, though, for what it's worth.

mastergrunt44
01-03-2010, 05:21 PM
SteveHouse: A midi controller is pretty good if you're short on space as well as cash, also if it's more of a hobby thing. Just make sure you research and get a good one as many of them can be sh** if you catch my drift.

icaneatcatfood: Remember that if you plan on buying equipment like that you're going to need everything including a mixer and speakers (just reminding you, pretty sure you know). You're going to want something that is in your price range but quality. Space is also a big deal when you have equipment. And with a pair of CD players you're going to need lots of cd's (duh) unless you get an interface like Serato Scratch live(Which I highly recommend) or Traktor Skratch Pro (I'm sure it's ok but I find Traktor very meh compared to Scratch live).

If either of you need more info or advice or recommendations please do ask!

That dude actually looks pretty much perfect for what I do  It's right up at the tip-top of what my possible budget might be, though. I'm hoping I can convince my parents to buy it for me for my birthday, though I'd be willing to put birthday money toward it to help if I needed to. I'd have to actually talk to them about it first I suppose. We should probably go for "about as affordable as possible," at any rate. I don't need high-end stuff, just something that works, you know? Around $300 is probably as high as I can (comfortably) go.

The RMX is good since it has a built in soundcard so you don't have to buy another interface like a Numark I/O or something like that. Craigslist can be handy. If you can find a Vestax VCI-100 Tabletop Controller for cheap, that would be alot better because the platters are touch sensitive.

Although they're not essential per se, they help and give a better feel. Those type of platters are like real CDJ's or turntables which is why I personally find it to be a plus.

if you don't want to use lots of cds, get pioneer cdj400s and use a usb stick with them instead. i wouldn't recommend using serato or traktor unless you don't plan on playing in clubs in the future (i've seen a few djs setting up their gear in the dark, fumbling around trying to position their laptops and crap around the club's gear, whilst everyone stood around in silence waiting for them), they are fine for bedroom djs though.

also it's important to get a good set of headphones that are designed for DJs. a pair of sennheiser hd25s will sound crystal clear and last you for years.

to keep up to date with new tracks, check the new releases/unreleased tracks sections on globalhardstyle.com and globalhardcore.net, and to download tracks check junodownload, dance-tunes, trackitdown, beatport and hardstyle.com for a start.

i have a cdj400 that i bought used from my boyfriend, they are quite excellent (significantly better than cdj100/200s and obviously cheaper than 800/1000s). definitely a good unit to start with that you could keep for years, and if you get the opportunity to use the better pioneer models you wont find a huge difference in the way the jogwheel operates.

Dark_Knight94
01-05-2010, 04:52 AM
cdj400? Never heard of it before. I only use Korg and Yamaha products, though... To record, i use D3200 Korg track recorder, that one's really neat. you can use USB stick on it too. Korg have some awsome effect samplers like KP3(which i use now, it's amazing!), but if you'd want something cheaper I'd say try with Yamaha. But Korg really gives you for the money.

I'm looking at these CDJ 200's on ebay at the moment. They don't have the USB function but that's not really a deal breaker for me. They seem like good units.

divid3d
01-05-2010, 01:41 PM
the main reasons why i wouldn't get cdj200s are:

1. because they don't have 'vinyl mode' (which determines how the cd slows down or speeds up when the jog dial is touched or moved). i've been told by many experienced djs that the way it skips frames on the cd makes it much harder to mix with compared to something like the cdj400 or above which have both cd mode and vinyl mode. this might be fine if you learn on it and get used to it, but i'd much rather use a cdj that can act like vinyl personally, as it makes more sense. i tried using the cd mode on a cdj400 and had no ****ing idea what was going on :haha

2. because the very small jog dial size, design and lack of height makes it harder to make adjustments.

3. because i've been told the pitch control is inaccurate, making it hard to judge how much you're pitching a track up/down (which is a vital part of mixing).

4. because they don't have the USB function - makes things much easier for home usage. the idea of having to burn a new cd just to play a new track i got would be rather annoying.

i've never heard anyone say a bad word about cdj400s (in fact everyone tends to sing their praises haha) but i have heard many people complaining about 200s or telling people not to bother getting them but to spend a bit more on something else.

if i wanted to spend less than the cost of cdj400s i'd look at another brand such as denon or reloop.

oh also, be very careful buying off ebay. make sure you will still be covered by warranty etc if something goes wrong! you may have to send the units overseas to get them repaired, etc.

icaneatcatfood
01-05-2010, 02:42 PM
Oh yeah true about the warranty. Haha, you saved me from that purchase, I'll check into Denon and Reloop. I still have a couple more months til I can buy some anyway XD

Doubt I'd do the synthesizer method, assuming that actually requires playing stuff :haha I found this (http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/deadmau5-technical-rider/) which has Deadmau5's setup, which is obviously going to be really expensive and everything, but it was just to give me an idea. Yea, considering you can make it with just a computer and a mouse, performing it live is far more confusing.

Yea, to me it looks like he's basically just playing the songs of his laptop, with the controllers controlling when the tracks come in, and then he's using the EFX-1000 to add effects to the tracks, so he can liven it up and alter it live, to make it more interesting, and then using the DJM800 as you said, to mix it and send it to the speakers and his headphones.

Thanks for the help those guys. I'm in no position to start really thinking about it as I haven't even made yet, I was just hypothetically thinking and realise I had no clue :haha

The beginning is more progressive, which can be rather boring. If you don't like the first couple, just skip ahead like 30 minutes until it gets more solid.

That track was tech trance IMO, quite heavy on the techno side. I really like it actually, except for the bit from like 2.25-2.50 (which seems out of place to me), so thanks for the link  Any remixes of this out there?

Doubt I'd do the synthesizer method, assuming that actually requires playing stuff :haha I found this (http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/deadmau5-technical-rider/) which has Deadmau5's setup, which is obviously going to be really expensive and everything, but it was just to give me an idea. There's a video of him performing at the bottom, from like his point of view, and I'm just curious as to how he's doing what he does.

The synth method works really well with a master sequencer that has a lot of MIDI outputs (or just a MIDI interface with a loada outs synced to the DAW on your computer which has the master sequences) so it's kinda like conducting a big orchestra of synthesizers :D That leaves you free to twiddle cutoff and decay knobs, and the like. If you use soft synths, it won't be as physical and people will assume you're just playing your laptop, but you can map midi controls to different aspects of the software synths to manipulate it live, so the people that know the song will hear and appreciate the live manipulations.

I've yet to perform any electronic music live, though, but I know how it works more or less.

Yea, from what I've read, a lot of the artists I listen to and are influenced by use the second method. Like, they do essentially just play the song off their laptop, but they run it through an effects box (for example Deadmou5 puts it through the Pioneer EFX-1000) and use midi controllers so they can edit the song live to make it less like listening to the cd.

One thing I'm really interested in doing is live playing, one-man performances and stuff.

Electronic music opens up a whole new world for me. I still don't know what I like, and what I don't like. It's all very interesting. I've gotten some good rec's in here, but most of the electronic music I love is stuff I stumble across randomly, or when I remember songs that were popular when I was a kid and use them as a starting point on wikipedia articles to find similar songs and artists.

I've gotten back into the Bomfunk MC hits lately - I haven't really heard any of their songs (except Freestyler in clips on tv) for years, since my early teens.

What's the best, easiest and cheapest ways any of you guys make your own music, or make remixes and mashups? I only have basic software like audacity but I've recorded a tiny bit of guitar with that, never tried electronic. Any good? Or is there othere software out there I should try?

I put together a totally passable trance mix last night! Damn my laptop for not quite keeping up a couple of times, but it didn't crash altogether, and I think it went well enough in general to share with you guys. Nothing new here except my own stuff ;)

Steve House - Wet Dream 2010 (http://soundcloud.com/stevehouse11/wet-dream-2010)

Small technical failure at 4:13, and a big one at 20:15. Anything else is my own doing.

1. iiO vs Randy Katana - Play it Smooth [Steve House Mashup]
2. Leon Bolier - Ocean Drive Boulevard
3. Sid van Riel - Riel People Know [W&W Remix]
4. Steve House - Asylum
5. Jesselyn - Iron
6. Cressida vs. Marco V - Onyric Unprepared [Cosmos Mashup]
7. Robbie Buri - Casino [Re Ward Re Press]
8. Tiesto - Traffic [DJ Montana 12" Edit]
9. Galen Behr & Leon Bolier - Wet Dream

There's a volume problem between Riel People and mine, and then Iron into Unprepared kicked my ass. Other than that I felt like this went pretty well.

It's because I did mine in GarageBand, which outputs very quietly. I tried to boost the volume in Audacity, yes, which should give you an idea of how quiet it would have been had I done nothing at all :haha

Also, just a tip(not sure if this applies to you or not) but the quality between tracks is really important. If you go from one track that's 320 to 256 or vice versa and so on there will be a definite volume difference that you'll notice. So that's another thing to keep in mind when you're mixing.

Going to get the other Glowing Flame Records to hopefully find more, but suggestions are very welcome.

Not so much uplifting, but I suppose some of it is. Vocal is good, as is a bit of tech though I've already done a tech mix recently (I'm probly gonna reuse a bit from that though). This is what I have right now, starting techy and growing cheese.

Heatbeat - Vergatron
Lange feat. Sarah Howells - Let it All Out
Robbie Buri - Casino [Re Ward Re Press] :headbang:
Andy Moor and Ashley Wallbridge feat. Meaghan Nealon - Faces [Ben Gold Vocal Mix]
Ilya Soloviev - Universal Universe
Cressida vs. Marco V - Onyric Unprepared [Cosmos Mashup]
Oceanlab - On a Good Day [Above & Beyond Club Mix]

In such a tight mix I'd like to keep artist repetition out. That means no more A&B, srsly. Ramblin, is that all from this year? I know a good bit of it is, but I think the Cosmic Gate remix of This World... is old. Unless its a new mix of an old choon, like the Super8 & Tab remix is. I wasn't too impressed with that one though, sadly.

I lack a strong closer, too, so keep that in mind.

SHEdit: Found a banger I'd forgotten about. Stoneface & Terminal - Santiago [2 AM Mix] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rb6wfp5Pu0) :headbang:

Hmmm. Well so far in 2010 one of my favorite tracks has been
Bart Claessen - Elf [but I'm not sure if that's even out.]
Kinda techy but Stoneface & Terminal - Don't Give a ****.
M6 & Klaus Goulart - Hidden Light (Original Mix) [Pretty bangin']
Nitrous Oxide & Adam Nickey - Moon Dust (Dave Schiemann Remix) [OK]
Ali Wilson - Boombox (Jochen Miller Rework) [LATE 2009, idk if that bothers you]
Cressida - Two-O-Ten (Ronski Speed Uplifting Remix) [Uplifting yet banging]

Hello dance thread, I will be seeing Above & Beyond on March 20th and I can't wait! They are headlining "Spring Awakening" in Chicago, with Benny Benassi and Second Sun as the openers. I'm not a big Benassi fan(I got electro-housed out after too many trips to the clubs, and his stuff is not even that good of electro-house), and I don't really know about Second Sun. Above & Beyond is my favorite trance act and it will be the first time rolling in over a year and a half! We have a hotel room for after too. ^ Yeah, though there are a lot of acts I like on the bill this year. Infected Mushroom, Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond, The Crystal Method, Damian Marley & Nas, and Groove Armada are awesome, and Deadmau5 and Tiesto are alright. David Guetta is pretty good too, he has a lot of radio b.s., but I've heard some pretty good mixes by him. I also heard Orbital, Swedish House Mafia, and Sasha & John Digweed are good, but I don't personally know their music.

I just can't wait to find out EDC's lineup! Beyond Wonderland looks awesome too, it's the first year and the same people who do EDC, Together As One, and Nocturnal are the ones doing it. It is the same day as the Above & Beyond show I'm going to though. Paul Van Dyk and Sander Van Doorn are spinning for it.

None is best. Any software you choose + shit tons of practice = decent music.

That being said, certain DAWs are tailored for certain styles/applications. What are you trying to do, genre-wise?

Although for the bit I have underlined, I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong. But they are psy-trance, are they not?

nah i don't think infected mushroom are crap... daft punk, basshunter, tiesto etc on the other hand :/

^Awesome :five: Who'd you catch?

I come to you, T&D, with a dilemma. I need electro house with a double portion of bass. The newer, the better. Two tracks are up for your suggestion, and at least one of them should really be a bass monster. Tech house is cool too I suppose.

Other tracks in the mix right now include Monolythe - Siberia [JELO remix] and Joey Modus and Kazell - Slack Jaw (mashed up with Move Your Body ;)), so if that's any indication of the bass and dirt I'm after, coo. (There's also a couple of deadmau5 and some Wippenberg, so it's not all intense shit.)

mastergrunt44
03-28-2010, 12:35 AM
^Awesome :five: Who'd you catch?

Armin, Swedish House Mafia, Sander Van Doorn, Laidback Luke, Kaskade, Chuckie, Gareth Emery, Carl Cox, Erik Morillo, Dirty South, Timo Maas, Afrojack, Jerome Ismae. Not much trance but still lots of fun.

As for this electro-house tune, what bpm area are we talking and does it have to be that genre or can it be something else?

SteveHouse
03-28-2010, 02:24 AM
Well it doesn't have to be any genre. I've got Deadmau5, The Crystal Method, and had Leon Bolier all in here, just to kinda play around. My ideal tempo is 125-130, a bit higher is ok but lower is nothx. Slack Jaw is around 126 I think, it's my slowest. If it's trance it had better fit, though. That's why I tossed out Galen Behr and Leon Bolier - Wet Dream. Didn't work out. (Doesn't help that in my Wet Dream 2010 mix I ended with it, at something like 138+ bpm, and this is 129-131 depending on what tracks I'm using, so it sounded all bland to me.)

SHEdit: Also,
Armin, Swedish House Mafia, Sander Van Doorn, Laidback Luke, Kaskade, Chuckie, Gareth Emery, Carl Cox, Erik Morillo, Dirty South, Timo Maas, Afrojack, Jerome Ismae. Not much trance but still lots of fun. Wat.

(There's still some fail, don't get me wrong. :() The flow, for being as odd as it is, I think works pretty well. Beatmatching issues I blame on UltraMixer's lack of precision

2. Marcus Schossow & Robert Burian - Kofola
3. Chris Lake & Michael Woods - Dominos
4. Wippenberg - Drumster
