Darkstep reccomendations?
Grooverider's album is always nice and dark. Not techy though at all.

Darkstep reccomendations?

Evol Intent
Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch
Limewax (only really dig a few tracks though)
Tech Itch (specially his Penetration Records stuff)
Current Value
Gremlinz
Dylan
Counterstrike
Dieselboy
SPL

There's more, but these are the only ones I have any familiarity with.

Ask Masta for more.

LOL @ Current Value. Fucking pots and pans Technical Itch clone.

If you're asking for techstep, Noisia, Dom & Roland, N'phect, Phace, Black Sun Empire, Mayhem. Paradox's work is pretty techy, although its drumfunk.

No. There's a line between good erractic breaks and pots and pans. Technical Itch can pull it off. So can Limewax. They do it tastefully. Current Value does it throughout an entire "tune" and his music goes nowhere.

Have you actually listened to Limewax?

He sounds like he drank a bathtub of coffee, grabbed a few breaks, drowned them in distortion, arranged them and then threw in random pauses.

Yes, Scars on the Horizon is one of my favourite drum n bass albums.

Meh, I guess it's all a matter of tastes.

Personally if I want to be clobbered by over-the-top drum sounds, I'll go to breakcore and industrial. A lot of darkstep seems to suck, it seems. :(

Mainly because I've had that song for ages and it is ****ing amazing.

If not, then just similar songs or whatever.

Exactly. I don't even have my Current Value stuff under Jungle/Drum & Bass. Its under Hardcore & Trance.

TWO NEW DUBSTEP MIXES from the Claw.
I love the new American dubstep claw is pioneering, with its huge distorted wobbles, massive sub basslines, gabber kicks, and more complex beats. He seems to suck what garage was left in the style and replaced it with crunk and hyphy heaviness. Enjoy:

I've already blasted the Thoughtbombing promo mix a few times, new one is new to me.

I've just been listening to an hour-long dark psytrance mix... pretty epic stuff.

I still prefer darkstep and dubstep to it by a longshot. Just all the 'meditation' stuff is so BS... just play the tunes and forget the 'spiritual' nonsense.

Yeah, I like most of the stuff I hear I guess, I just don't like the whole 'tribal shamanic' aspect of it. I'm just not a spiritual person.

I'm not much into 80's techno like Depeche Mode, but I don't mind the rave techno stuff. I can't help but d the party-boy whenever I hear that damned bass beat.

I have a friend who can techno DJ, though, as in turntables, and another who is taking it up.

So, I want to make dance/electronic music, but I have no idea where to begin or what gear to buy. I have a keyboard, so that's a start, and I figure I'll need a sampler (have no idea which to buy, though). What sort of gear do I need? Also, what is the difference between a sequencer and a sampler?

I'd say, try a software program before getting any gear.

Fuck all that. Just buy a program like Cubase or Fruity Loops or Reason, learn to work them, sign up at an electronic production forum (www.dogsonacid.com is pretty much the drum n bass central, but I dunno if you wanna do drum n bass), get help, get out there, and have fun!

Yeah, I don't even have any hardware, unless you count my external sound card/interface, and a couple midi controllers. Hard ware synths/samplers are very expensive, too.

Also, SAMPLE SAMPLE SAMPLE. Don't worry about copywrite laws, just do it, if you wanna sell, clear it later, but if you wanna sound unique and don't wanna sound like some robot machine musician, then give your music some life with a couple samples.

I use a Mac Mini with a single intel processor, and I run Logic Express on it (Mac only)
Logic is amazing when you get a hold on it, but the initial learning curve is huge. But you learn one DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), you can get a hang on any other fairly quickly.

I think I should post here if I want recs, right?

I want to start listening to more electronic music (I don't know the difference between Dance, Techno, Trance, House, Hardstyle etc. so I'll take anything). I've listened to it in the background for years and liked it, though I'm mainly a metal, rock and blues man.

Here's what I know and like (very few songs):
Daft Punk
The Superman Lovers song "Starlight"
Touch Me by Rui Da Silva (sp?)
Breathe, Spitfire, Voodoo People (Pendulum remix) by The Prodigy
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom by The Vengaboys

And that's pretty much all I can think of that I listen to regulary. Would someone mind giving me some recommendations, not neccesarily based on what I've listed above, but the essentials to get me started in the genres? Basically just some stuff with a good beat, good melodies, and preferably with at least some vocals as opposed to complete instrumentals. Thanks.

Phill-Rock, based on what you've said it's probably a good idea to start with house and trance (melodies, vocals, etc) but since you like metal there are many harder genres that you may enjoy...

check out a few trance songs and see what you think:
oceanlab - satellite
veracoche - carte blanche
armin van buuren - burned with desire

if you want something faster/harder or more of the same, post back :)

Hahaha, I miss 90s dance music... even ultra-cheesy Eurodance.

Yeah, that track is a bloody classic.. as is 7 Seconds Away by Neneh Cherry and Youssou N'Dour.

Eurodance and cheesy yet fun tunes that bring back the nostalgia? Posted this way back in the thread, but definitely worth checking out if you want some of that -----> xxxxxxxx

Damn, link doesn't work anymore and no new ones up...

80's Italo Disco compilation by the same guy is here ------> http://www.megaupload.com/?d=28DLYLYX

Or I highly suggest checking out I-F's In the Hague Vol. 1 and 2 (I think thats the title, Hague is in it at least), for most nostalgic stuff, though the link I couldn't find is the best set for early eurodance I can think of. I may upload it if I have time to figure out an easy way with my crap internet.

I've recently been REALLY into Chiptek (or chiptune, chipbreak, whatever).

I've even been trying to make stuff in LSDj. I've only been messing around with it for a day and a half, and I can tell it's going to take a while for me to get good with it.

But, so far, I know of Sabrepulse, Capslock Down, and The Swashbuckling Swantoon.

For most of what I've heard of it, to be based around 4 bit sound, it's amazing.

Will do.

And, yea, LSDj is more than likely what he uses.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LSDj

I have the emulator of it.

You use stuff other than LSDj, of course, but the base sound, since it's 4-bit, is more than likely made on LSDj, or Nanoloop, but that's more of a drum machine.

Sabrepulse uses LSDj primarily, as well. In fact, I found out about it from his Myspace.

It's an amazing little program.

I have his KFC Core album, and it's pretty hilarious, but I don't like it that much. But there is this one track which is just a short acapella track of people singing about KFC, which is great. It follows into a great track which takes it's main melody from Hall of the Mountain King.

Will do.

Check out Klute's techno material (he's a drum n bass artist).

MAYBE Ricardo Villalobos, he's minimal techno, but minimal techno still has that more chilled out feel than other forms like Detroit techno. Underworld are pretty unique though, have you heard their newest drop, Oblivion With Bells? I love it!

Ok, so I'm pretty new at techno and it's slightly overwelming. I don't know much techno but I like a lot of what I've heard. I don't like the super poppy stuff (freezepop, scooter etc.) I'm not really sure what all I'd like or what all the sub genres are about. I love Daft Punk and Darude is pretty good too. I really have no idea where to start off so if you could recommend some good artists/songs to show what the subgenres are all about.

I don't know anyone who's heard of psy-trance except some of the big druggies around here.I don't know why psy-trance is such a big thing for people when they wanna trip tbh. It's real sinister from what I've heard of it, like the squelchy synth lines etc. Just seems like the perfect recipe to disaster for me. Like if I'm gonna be in that state where my conciousness can be totally flipped so easily from happy and relaxed, to scared ****less like what can happen when on acid or e's then the last thing I wanna happen is to be delved in some sort of dark sci-fi world.

Course though, to anyone else this 'dark sci-fi world' could be heaven for them so....to each their own :peace:

Chavs mainly listen ragga jungle round here so ya know ;) Agree with a poster up the page somewhere, people shouldn't really distinguish music by being "chavvy" or not although I see where they are coming from. See, as most chavs listen to the music thats on the charts etc. which is most of the time, just a watered-down (alot of the cheesy or formulaic for example, jump-up D n B) form of a specific genre, picked and packaged for the mainstream. So if something is cheesy or whatever it can be seen as "chavvy" ;)

MCs can be great with drum n bass, provided they are a talented MC and know the music and DJ they are working with well.
the best i've seen were skibadee with shy fx and qc with andy c. both fantastic. pumped the crowd up and MC'd in a way that suited the music, rather than ruining it.

the only other genre apart from drum n bass that i've seen an MC work well with was happy hardcore - mc storm with the raverbaby crew was excellent.

imo, MCs need to stay the hell away from genres like hardstyle. it can't be done well, they just wreck every build up and break down with their crap.

I hope you don't mind but I tried those kicks and they are damn good.
Please, use em. I put some work into them, and I don't even make trance. I think I was trying to make a house kick and I put the resonance too high...

I really need to get used to using a proper program, when I muck about with samples and stuff I still use audacity and cut and paste. I'm not serious about it, but I should try and learn how to use DWs.

I could probably make some gabber kicks too, if anyone wants em.

I'll see what I can do over the weekend. My gabber kicks are very, evil, unlike the somewhat raunchy, fuzzy kicks, mine are just cold and evil.... You'll like em.

i'm not sure if any of you producer kids like actually paying for stuff, but you can get lots of pretty rad sounding sample packs made by the pros on trackitdown. they all have descriptions to tell you what genre they were made for, and you can have a listen to a demo of the samples before you buy. they could be really useful in your productions...

I'm gonna be watching AvP:R with my friends tomorrow, sometime in the late afternoon.

Of course I could catch the show, especially as the cinema is really close, however after tomorrow I've got my course from 10.30 to 4.30. And I've been invited to a free breaks night on Friday too.

I could pull it off, but I doubt it.

Btw, Dominion by Benga is sick. Actually the whole album rocks. Anyone check out his Essential Mix?

Well tis a good start, needs a lot of extra layers though, some automations would be nice. And a better mixdown, but hey, it's way better than the first track I ever made.

Just keep at it, it'll turn out pretty well at this rate :)

Yeah I know theres hardly any bass, I'm pretty bad at making bass riffs.

What are automations?

Eh, basically when you write a change in the level of something, for example volume or bitch, so that instead of doing it in realtime when you press play, you already have it all done.

I know, crappy explanation, but look up some tutorials, because your tracks will be dull without em.

So is it like having an effect go over the whole song? Because I was wondering if there was a way to sort of......muffle......an entire section of the track but I didn't know how.

Basically. You can even change the waveshape with automations, or modify the effects etc. There's really no limits to how you use them.

I never used automations in my FL tracks, but here's a tutorial that should help you:

That's pretty good. I think it would be good it the beat entered the song more subtly though, but that's just my opinion. Plus it's much better than the stuff I have on my profile.
