This an updated version of the old chat thread by rushtonisback. Some of the stuff was updated, and some added. Enjoy it.

UG Chat, and its "History".

Well, to start off, The 1st UG chat ever was in a server called AfterNET. What happened was that the UG Operators could only control went on in that channel, not
the rest of the server. So when idiots went and spammed other channels, the host 'Guitar_Gue' was banned. Then, LordSephorith and his friend frostbite had a server and gave it to UG. What was different about this server is that UG controlled EVERYTHING in that server. After using LordSephiroth's server for quite some time, he and his friend decided that they could no longer fund it. SpacedOut quickly found another server in purevanity but sadly, it didn't last long. We are now on irc.connorhd.net and have been for a few years.



How can I talk on the Ultimate-Guitar server/channel?

First of all, you need a client to run the chat in. There are many different versions, plus scripts to add to them, but the one I would recommend is 'mIRC'. This client is easy to use, and is very well made. This is what I use, and most other people use it as well. OK, please visit http://www.mirc.com and download it. Version 6.17 is the latest release. When you use it, something that looks like this:

will appear. I recommend supporting the program, but I realize that people just don't have the money. The program will still work when the evaluation period is over, you just have to wait a few seconds before it lets you click continue. If you don't want to bother with that at all, Version 6.03 is available here (http://stw.ryerson.ca/~gmicieli/mirc603) and won't prompt you on start-up. Thanks to Snyper for the link.



Installing mIRC 6.17 (New Version)

Download the file from www.mirc.com Install it to a directory (C:/Program Files/mIRC is default). After install, double click on the shortcut and the program will come up. A box will come up with the options 'register now' and 'continue'. If you would like to trial the program, click continue. If you would like to pay for it, click register now. After that box has gone away. An options box should come up next, enter your name-email address and nickname. Then on the left hand side, click the 'Servers' button in the tree. There is 2 scroll down boxes. The top one should say all, the bottom one will have some weird server name. You should also see an add button. Click that add button and insert the following information:

Description: Ultimate-Guitar Chat
IRC Server: irc.connorhd.net
*Port: 6667
Group: Leave blank
Password: Leave blank

Now under the IRC Server scroll down box should read 'Ultimate-Guitar Chat'. Now press OK. Below the file menu shows a tiny lightning bolt. This lightning bolt is the connect button, whenever you want to connect, just press it. After pressing it, you will be into the server. Now type '/join #Ultimate-Guitar' in the main chat window and you have entered the UG Chat!!! Now you have to register your nickname:

1. Type /msg nickserv register passwordgoeshere
2. Then everytime you connect to the channel, type /msg nickserv identify passhere

Now you are done! You can go chat away, I will show how to avoid all that typing commands stuff later.

**NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SET YOUR SERVER DETAILS EVERYTIME YOU CONNECT, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO AFTER YOU SET THEM IS USE THE LIGHTNING BOLT TO CONNECT AND DISCONNECT.



Installing 6.03 (Old Version)

Download the file from http://stw.ryerson.ca/~gmicieli/mirc603 This should download into your Temporary Files, unless you have chosen a different directory. Rename it to mirc603.exe instead of the mirc603.txt. After renamed, double click and install to a directory (C:/Program Files/mIRC is the default). After installing, double click on the icon and you should see a window with some information. Close that. Then an options menu shall come up. At the top of that options menu, there's a scroll down menu that should have the word 'All' in it. Then below it will be another scroll menu, next to that menu is a button 'Add'. Click that button and a small window shall come up. In the window, type the following options:

IRC Server: irc.connorhd.net
*Port: 6667
Group: Leave blank
Password: Leave blank

*I will get into ports later. But still put the 6667 in the port option.

After you do that, click OK, then go to that scroll down menu and choose 'Ultimate-Guitar Chat'. If it is not their, check that the scroll bar above it says 'All'. It should work. Then if you want to set up some personal preference/options, click on the left side 'tree' and choose what you want, be sure not to change anything you don't know what it is. After you set your options, choose OK on the options menu and you should go back to the main screen. In the top left hand corner, below File, there should be a lightning bolt. That stands for connect, click it and you should connect to the Ultimate-Guitar server. Note: If you hold your curser over each of those buttons in the top of the screen, you can find out what they are for. After you connect to the server, type '/join #Ultimate-Guitar' and you should go into the channel. (Commands will be shown later). When you have arrived at UG channel, your nickname will be what you put in the options menu. Now you have to register your nickname, do this by following these commands.

1. Type /msg nickserv register passwordgoeshere
2. Then everytime you connect to the channel, type /msg nickserv identify passhere

I will show an easier way to do that later on, until then, just use that. I also recommend you to write your pass and commands down in a book somewhere, just so you don't forget. Now you?re onto the UG channel! Yay!


Using the java chat

Zappp was amazingly nice and hosted a java based chat client. It can be found here. (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/chat) The chat should be ready to roll, just change your name. It should look like this:

Ports?

I have seen many threads about ports and such.. So, I think most clients have the default port set to 6667. That WILL work for accessing our UG server. Ports 6665-6669 are open. You don't have to know what they are or what they do.. But they should be set between 6665-6669.



Commands

Every server is not the same, different servers have different bots that run them... For example AfterNET has X2, and RandomChat has R2. So some of the commands that worked in UG's AfterNET channel, will not work in UG's dedicated server. Everything you want to know is in these 3 commands...

Do I have to type those commands everytime I enter the channel?

No. You don't. Please use those commands only the very first time on entering the UG Chat. Here is how to make it much easier. Now, I think that nickserv automatically identifys you, but, to be safe, I'll explain.
There are things called aliases, what they are basically shortcuts. If you notice up top of mirc there are a bunch of buttons. There should be a green one that says [/A]. Click that. You should see a textbox come up, there is already some things in it, don't delete them. Just go down the the very bottom and start your own brand new line. Type? '/I /msg nickserv identify passhere' No quotations. Now every time you enter the chat, all you have to do is type /I and you will be automatically identified.

Helpful tips

-Colored text is a nuisance to most users of the channel as many have different colored backgrounds. We would appreciate if you didn?t change your text as it may make it unreadable for some. If you use mIRC and the colors are just too bland for you, you can change them. Alt+k will bring up a new window in which you can change your colors.
-1337 speak is generally frowned upon. Shorthand, such as ur, is acceptable but t4lKin lyk d1s is just being obnoxious.
-Although this is a guitar orientated site, conversations in the chat don't always have to do with guitars. Please don't come in point out that this is a guitar site and we should talk about guitars. However, if you have a question, feel free to ask it as someone will generally answer no matter what the topic of choice is at that moment in time.
-If you come in there, and people are talking about something, feel your way into the conversation. If no one is talking, say something for people to respond to. Don't be shy, we were all new at once so we know what it was like.
-There are many scripts out there for you to customize your chat client. http://mircscripts.com is a very popular one.



How do I change my name?

Type /nick newnick
Many, many people have trouble with this so don't feel bad when you mess up the first 2 or 3 or 17 times... it's normal. Usually people in the chat will help you with this.



How do I do the '* colin hugs alex' thing?

Type /me hugs alex
Nice and straightforward. =)



How Can I do those cool mp3 things?

Easily the single most asked question of any. There is no doubt you'll see people displaying mp3 scripts and alas, a detailed description of how to get them. Firstly, go to http://home.rochester.rr.com/gotilla/ and grab the gotmp3.mrc file. Put this in your mIRC folder. Now, in mIRC type /load -rs gotmp3.mrc and a warning should pop up and click okay. The main setup window for gotilla should pop up. In the Mp3 Player box, put in the .exe of the program you use to play music such as Winamp or iTunes. In the directory section, put the root folder where you keep your music. This is a pretty condensed version of it but you should be able to get it, if not, someone in the chat will be there to help you.



HELP!!!

If you simply just cannot get the chat working, there are a number of things you can do. Post in this thread and feel free to pm me, divid3d (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/member.php?u=12971), Primusfan (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/member.php?u=88582). If you can access the chat from a friends house, great. People in the chat will most likely be there to help you out. Don't give up on the chat because it's too complicated or something, I know most people will help you get onto the chat, and once your there it's all easy.

also - i think this is a great thread, and should be very useful... however, no one seems to know it exists. the amount of kids i've had to help in the chat (with how to change their nick, how to do actions, etc), who wouldn't have needed any help at all if they had read this thread, is astounding. not sure exactly what should be done about this, but it just seems to me like a very useful thread is going to waste because the people who need it most don't know where to find it.

Long time on see fellas, how's everyone doing?

It's been probably 2-3 years since I have been in contact with a few of you, the only one I have stayed remotely contacted too is Matt (thebasshead? I think was his username). Use to be good friends with Crink/whatever his name is now and haven't even talked to him in ages. What happened to me? We'll the whole guitar/wanting to be Led Zepplin thing was taking over my life, I decided to just let it go.. it was hard for the first two weeks, but after that I was fine.. and GOT my life back. I still pick it up every once and again but nothing special. Last few years I've become a self renound "Honda Enthusist" (I still can't spell), I've had many different cars and have recently found my dream- a 92 Civic Hatch. I've got a lot of money into it so far, and a lot more. Cars are my love now I guess you could say.

I'm glad to see the site is booming, I guess zappp has been keeping it going. Its unbelievable the progress this site has made in the last few years. Still the same ol bull**** in the main discussion forum though!

Thanks to whoever it was that made this post, and updated it, as you can tell I'm not on anymore.

Whatever happened to Ange (I still remember I was in love with her and kneaph), Jinxx, Garett, Dreadnough, JuiceBox? Haha Wow it's been awhile I can't believe I remember the usernames. I also remember morbid_death, what ever happened to him? He was a great guy to talk too. I should get on the chat someday.

until someone clears it. it depends on what you did and all that. they usually last anywhere from 2 minutes to a week. just come back and check whenever and see if you got unbanned.

go to options, then IRC, then highlight. check the box that says 'enable highlighting' and then the add button. the other box will pop up and it's pretty straightforward from there.

AMIP, is a much better version of gotmp3, imo, and basically works by becoming a plugin for Itunes/WinAmp (not sure if there is a Windows Media Version) and as well as displaying in mIRC seems to work with messenger and other programs if you want it to.

I'm in quite a pickle here.

Whenever I try to access the chat using Firefox, my computer locks up and I have to manually shut it down. I don't think it's the chats fault, I just don't think Java likes Firefox.

But whenever I try to use Internet Explorer, nothing shows up in the box, just the smileys on the side. :wtf:

First of all, what anti virus do you use?

Second of all, with mine (McAffee) you go:

Right click on the icon in system tray>Viruscan Console> Right click on Access Protection

And then uncheck the 2nd and 3rrd boxes on the list.

This often leaves alex and Frenchy to op and often due to other considerations they both have it can take a while for many of these problem chatters to be removed. So i was wondering if possibly we could have a few more ops who function on GMT to cover the chat during the British Afternoon until the main body ops in america signs on.

haha, you should still get some chat ops in there. like, give them normal accounts on here, but an op account in the chat. i would imagine if you abused it you'd lose it pretty damn fast

AMIP, is a much better version of gotmp3, imo, and basically works by becoming a plugin for Itunes/WinAmp (not sure if there is a Windows Media Version) and as well as displaying in mIRC seems to work with messenger and other programs if you want it to.

I downloaded mIRC 6.21, and I followed the 6.17 instructions until "This lightning bolt is the connect button, whenever you want to connect, just press it. After pressing it, you will be into the server". It says

Unable to connect to server (Software caused connection abort)

What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Actually no, when I've added the UG chat server, it doesn't come up as Ultimate-guitar Chat, it just says 'UG Chat' like I put in.

EDIT 2: No it isn't connecting by clicking Chat from here either, it was last night but miraculously isn't again.

Its something on your end. Try a different port, according to /stats P, 6667-6669 are open for client connections.

A lot of times, ISPs and network admins block port 6667 since a lot of malware uses that port to phone home.

EDIT: also, in that screenshot, you're not on the right server. Go to Tools > Options > Connect > Servers, click add, then enter:

Description: UG Chat (or whatever you wish to call it)
IRC Server: irc.connorhd.net
Port: 6667
Group: just leave this bit blank

Once that's done, click OK, then click the Select button. Try connecting and you should be on irc.connorhd.net. From there, you can join the channel (/join #ultimate-guitar), and register your name if you wish.

I doubt it, connor runs, pays for and owns the chat server, and he made the call to change the java and i doubt he'll change it back.

I'm pretty sure on mIRC you can set it to beep at you when someone talks. I know I did something similar (beit that or coding it myself) when I used to use mIRC.

I don't see what's not user-friendly about this one. I much prefer it. That said, I haven't used the Java for months now, but I tried the new one the other day for shits and giggles, and it's a lot simpler. The text is easier to read, there's more space for it and the colours don't make me want to chew my eyes out.
