 Eric The Red.

The Wild Rover + Dreams > you.

And I'm a bit surprised they've already gone so far with getting another album out... this totally caught me off guard. To me it seems like they just released Land haha. I'm stoked, though.

turns out i cant see them on Saturday.

one reason, my parents dont want me going alone (my friend who usually goes to concerts with me is well some what of a druggie now and i dont hang out with him anymore) and they dont trust me winging it alone or something.

they said I could go to the gate if my cousin went with, as he is 19 and blah blah blah, im 16.

so its probably a 40% chance im going lol

I'm on my 6th listen of Land now. It still fucking rocks.

Do you prefer the new or the old 'Hail to the Hammer'

I like the new one more. It seems to have more energy.

same here.

umm does anyone have the slightest idea of how to play any songs from ragnarok?

i am practicing Rage of the Skullgaffer now and it rocks, but the intro tapping/string skip thing is pretty weird, and i can only do that particular part at like 55% tempo, but i got the sweep thing down!

but i really want to play wings of time and ragnarok.

someone please help me out lol.

TİR mastermind Heri Joensen replied to an e-mail that i sent asking him if they could transcribe and sell guitar pro files of their songs.

they said that they are in the process, as well as finishing up their new album, due in April!!!

this year is gonna be great for metal, Dream Theater, Circus Maximus, On The Virg, TİR, Megadeth, possibly Alestorm, and a lot of DM bands i cant particularly think of ATM.

Saw them last week with Alestorm and Suidakra. "Hail to the Hammer" was excellent live, as were most of their tunes, though I was disappointed that they didn't have "Rainbow Warrior" on the setlist. The opening acts were completely ridiculous, and not in a good way...a few 15-year-olds showed up dressed in pirate garb for Alestorm (to be fair, though, another kid dressed up as some sort of shamanic druid for Tyr...f*cking LARPers).

Tyr are one of the greatest bands one can see live.

I have seen many a band over many a year, but something about Tyr's music, camaraderie, and presence creates an indisputable aura of brotherhood and archaic pride at what ever venue they play at.

Tır own. And they're good for a round or two after the show, if the next day's schedule permits.

I've seen them twice now... first time was nothing hugely exciting, but that was also on Paganfest, where they were predeced by Eluveitie and followed by Turisas... that's tough.

Second time, though, was incredible. Tiny venue + good filler music (Ensiferum! Amon Amarth! Wintersun! And... Tır? WTF?) made for a killer show. It was one of those concerts that you leave a way bigger fan than you are before.

Saw them last week with Alestorm and Suidakra. "Hail to the Hammer" was excellent live, as were most of their tunes, though I was disappointed that they didn't have "Rainbow Warrior" on the setlist. I've seen them three times in three different countries - the U.S., The Faroe Islands, and Germany. I didn't realize until Ragnarök festival in Germany this year that they're actually assholes, and very forward. It was a nice thing to learn. I can't decide whether or not I like them more after this revelation. Standing around outside after the venue closed and seeing Terji pouring a bottle of vodka over a girl's head for refusing to sleep with him kind of ruined the noble epicness of their music for me though ;)

Hmm, that sounds a bit odd. I didn't get that kind of impression of Terji when I met him last year. Although Heri just kind of walked away because we were having camera troubles when my friends, my brother, and I were trying to get a picture with him. I thought that was a bit rude but understandable.

Is there anything else that kind of put you off of them?

I have a friend whose band was on tour with them both in Europe and North America, and I've heard some pretty ridiculous stories. Thanks to this fact, I also spent a little bit of 'quality' time with them after the show at Ragnarok...you know, watching him try his luck with the crowd after everything closed down. His pickup lines are horrendous, and he evidently has a reputation for being a bit of an intentional creeper :) But AFAIK, it's just Terji and not the rest of 'em.

I just saw this band recommended on another forum:

News!!! If this is indeed one of their new songs, the music is good, as well as the vocals, but the lyrics and delivery of the vocal melody are quite cheesy in my opinion, perhaps it will grow on me, Tyr is still one of my favorite bands.

Terji shredding it up, so far I can say that I am indeed excited for this album, Tyr has not disappointed me yet, they came close with Land, but even that had some great parts to it, and By The Light of the Northern Star was just awesome.

Tyr, new album, good. Not mind-blowing or terribly innovative, but if you have enjoyed Tyr's work up to this point, go listen to The Lay of Thrym.

Highlights: Hall of Freedom, Fields of the Fallen, The Lay of Thrym, Flames of the Free.

Lyrical Highlight: "Kiss my Scandinavian ass!"

Covers: I (Sabbath) Stargazer (Rainbow), but good covers in my opinion mainly due to Heri's manly voice.

Tyr built their career towards Ragnarok and have been on a downward slump since. Ragnarok is a masterpiece though...

Ragnarok was a masterpiece, and their best album in my opinion thus far. Land was shaky and overly long , but it has its moments. By the Light of the North Star was a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned, and The Lay of Thrym furthers that sound with much more infectious melodies. Overall, a good album, not Ragnarok, but solid.

Enjoyed the new album; doesn't really bring anything new to the table, but definitely an enjoyable listen, and feels more cohesive than some of their other work so far.

I agree with you Emenius, but I can't explain it, few bands get my blood rousing and my victory fist pumping like Tyr. Heri's voice is fantastic as usual, and the guitar playing is absolutely astounding, Heri and Terji really are very accomplished musicians. In short, when it comes to folk metal, Tyr is my band, followed possibly by Temnozor. Heljareyga is good too, but merely derivative of Tyr.

Hehe, that's why I'm glad and honored that my brother, and two of his (and now mine to) friends saw them on the Ragnarok tour during Paganfest =O! They blew me away and were my favorite band on that tour.

I'm still really enjoying the new album, Tyr is just one of those bands that I wouldn't say have an entirely authentic sound, but I can't really find a band that is like them in terms of composition and vocal delivery; an oxymoron I know, but that's what I think. Any favorite songs off the new album guys? I'm personally quite fond of Flames of the Free, Nine Worlds of Lore, and Hall of Freedom.

Agree; I played it through about ten times since I got it, without getting sick of it. I'd have to say Evening Star, for favourite tracks though.

Just started listening to Ragnarok for the first time in ages. Still love it.

I only just realised they have a new album. They release albums with alarming frequency. 6 albums in 10 years in the metal world is a monster effort.

Too bad they all sound generic and boring. The first three were great efforts by any means. Really redefined folk metal.

I like the first 5. Land is pretty boring, but mostly enjoyable.

HFTA and Eric the Red > Ragnarok imo
the newer albums aren't even that but they're just nowhere near as exciting as the first 3.

HFTA and Ericd the Red have some great racks on them. They're all great, really, but I think that Ragnarok is just put together better. It's so coherent and just flows really well.

Land and BTLOTNS have that same feeling as Ragnarok, but the individual songs aren't quite as good.

What do you lads think about this;

You who think the hue of your hide means you are to blame
And your father's misdeeds are his son's to carry in shame
Not mine I'll take no part
You can shove the sins of the your father where no light may pass
And kiss my Scandinavian ass

Pages of the past
How long will they last?
A lie lost in the legacy of fools left us this parody unsurpassed
Pages of the past
How long will they last?
The shadow of the Swastika by fools' fears now for far too long has been cast

You who think the hue of your hide means you get to blame
The black for your own faults and so bring humanity shame
Make sure you count me out of the ranks of your inbred morons
With your sewer gas and kiss my Scandinavian ass

Pages of the past
How long will they last?
A lie lost in the legacy of fools left us this parody unsurpassed

The shadow of the Swastika by fools' fears now for far too long has been cast

I enjoy the overall theme or message of that particular song, but the rhythmic scheme of the song is quite silly with the perfect rhymes.

I'm not sure I understand it.

Were Tyr accused of being Nazis? Or were their families involved in the War on Jews?

I understand that they're saying that everybody should stop bullying Germany for what they've done because the Germans of today are not responsible for it, but I don't see how that relates personally to Tyr.

In WWII the Nazis used many of the scandinavian runes as sigils or ranks.

TYR and, IIRC, Moonsorrow were accused of supporting that becuase of the Runes they used in thier logos and artwork.

This song is a response to the flak that the bands recieved and the accusations of associating with Nazi Principles.

Ah, got it.

Were there any tabs in particular you were looking for? I think it's possible to export GP files as text so I could do that for you so long as you don't have a huge list of requests.

It wasn't any song in particular. Just wondering why there aren't many tabs there to begin with.

Thanks though.

I thought BtLotNS, while maybe not their best, had just the right amount catchiness, simplicity, and refinedness for what it was trying to be, but that The Lay of Thrym crossed the line into insipidity, cheesiness, dullness, and gimmickry, except for a few tracks. It was a pretty big letdown for me. BtLotNS isn't the heaviest album by any stretch of the imagination, but it has a certain heaviness for such a poppy album, but that heaviness is almost completely missing on The Lay of Thrym. If I had only heard The Lay of Thrym, I wouldn't think anything special about Tyr.

I actually really enjoy both of them, now. Their Black Sabbath cover, "I" on TLoT is ****ing brilliant. Probably my favourite song now. I still haven't heard the original, aside from a pretty badly recorded live version.

Ragnarok is still my favorite Tyr album, though. Contrary to most of the rest of you who love Eric the Red, HFTA is my second favourite.
