Right now i have a Silvertone Revolver , made in indonesia. Its my first electric guitar, and ive had it for about 5 months. It sounds alright, but i do not really like it. i can not get down to the 17th,-20th frets easily, and its effecting my playing, (is this normal for most guitars?).my hand seems to be squished. Christmas is coming soon, and i wanted to see what an upgrade would be, that sounds good, and you guys really like for a second guitar. i would like it to be at least under $500 usd. also, what type of pics do you recommend?

thanks

Yeah, it's "affecting" your playing... and it's a common problem with some guitars that are mostly cheap like your silvertone. 500 usd will get you a decent ibanez or washburn. They both have great necks with easy access to higher frets. Go for a 22 or 24 fretted guitar and it'll be easier to get up there. I spent about 900 usd on my second guitar, which now that i look back, was a bit too much...

Well.. first of all, you would want a guitar that you can get way low with... so I recommend getting a new one yes.
Second... the guitar I use and LOVE it is the Godin Freeway Classic. Check that out.. and it should be in your price range.
Also.. for playing solos and crazy riffs that are only on one string I usually use a hard pick... and for playing acoustic or playing fast chords or something I use a softer pick... like usually about .32mm or so...
I hope that helps you out a bit and I hope you have fun with your new guitar.

Well I have this (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-RG321-Electric-Guitar?sku=512492) and I like it. When I was trying out a bunch of guitars I also liked these 3:

Your best bet is to go to a store and try some stuff out to see if you like it or not though.
