I've found that I can usually find more tabs for songs on PT than GP, but GP is nice because it just sounds better in my opinion. Also, I don't necessarily advocate downloading licensed software, but with a bitTorrent client, you can download GP 5.2 with the RSE packs. Yeah it's better to buy it and support the company, but I wouldn't want people to miss out on it just because they can't afford it.

Yea, I just used uTorrent to get mine. I felt a bit guilty but... well they charge £40 for it =x I can buy a decent acoustic for that. It's a bit much to ask for the software.
Much prefer GP, it's so much easier to manage if you make a mistake, and the range of instruments and effects is great :D. PT is still useful but it needs a big improvement in terms of organisation.

Quick question... pinched harmonics in PT or GP... How?
buckethead_jr
07-01-2007, 09:12 AM
On GP, press the button at the bottom that has A.H on it and then select pinched harmonic.
ON PT, the closest you can get is an Artificial harmonic i'm afraid.

PT \m/
Used to use GP but it's nagging annoyed the fuck out of me. Seeing as I try to play mostly by ear now I only really use tabbing stuff too write out short licks and things like that and power tab never gives me the red tab font that I hate so much :D .

I’ve used PT for years. It’s a great product and I‘m grateful to the guy(s) who‘ve put so much of their time into it on a voluntary basis. I’ve only had the demo of GP for a day, however it’s a no-brainer. Heading over to Amazon to buy GP right after posting this. Going from PT to GP is the difference between driving a sturdy Chevy and a top of the line Cadillac. They’ll both get you from point A to point B, but, all things considered, I’d rather drive the Cadillac if it only costs fifty bucks more. GP has some strong features that PT simply doesn’t. It’s not accurate to call them “the same”. Don’t buy it if you don’t need or want those features though.
I still have some of the tunes I wrote the old fashioned way as a youngster: on manuscript paper with a pen almost thirty years ago (ok, with lots of stuff crossed out but I can still untangle it, hehe). PT thrilled me when I first stumbled into it. No nostalgia for pen and paper here. But GP feels elegant and smooth to work with by comparison AND it‘s on an active development track, which means a lot to me. Twenty-five bucks every year or two for a major upgrade? No problem. Sounds fair to me. Will PT ever be upgraded? No complaints either way since it’s free.
At the risk of sounding like an old man I gotta say, try to avoid stealing the software, kids. Just because it’s ‘easy to do’ doesn’t mean it’s ok. All of us in life ‘want’ things that we can’t afford. Stealing them just because it’s easy is not an option if you don’t want to be tagged as a loser. If I found out one of my employees was stealing software from anyone for any ‘reason’ I would fire him at first opportunity. Why? Because if the guy’s ethics were that squishy it would only be a matter of time before he came up with some bizarre self serving rationale to steal from me. I don’t want scumbags like that in my company.

muso_ chris

i just got both, i got guitar pro 5 off limewire, so they were boh free lol. but guitar pro is way better. but theres tabs for them both, so use them both. The realistic sound engine is great, way better than midi, and the drums on gutiar pro is alot easier to use, along with switching between instruments.

powertabs is free. powertabs is easy to use (if your familiar with musical notation). like guitar pro, you can also playback tablature in powertabs. powertabs is smaller in size. powertabs is midi based (if you have other software synths you can use them in powertabs as well). because powertabs is free, I have noticed more powertab files then guitar pro files.
www.power-tab.net is where you can get the program
www.powertabs.net is an enormous archive of powertabs
http://www.powertabs.net/profile.php?id=1928 are my own powertabs :)

IM just curious about Guitar Pro and POwer tab.
I haven't tried tab softwares but what's the best thing it does?
Can we convert MP3 to MIDI files and upload the MIDI file to the software and the software does all the TABs automatically and all you have to do is to play the tabs? Or it is for the user to really manually input notes/tabs?
I know this question sound 'lazy' but I'm just curious because I'm new to this kind of stuffs.=)
If it does, how accurate they do the tabs?
wasp2020

I have the latest version of guitar pro (5.2), but theres a million tabs on this site that i cant read because they were made using guitar pro 3, I looked around but i couldn't find gp3 anywhere. Any suggestions?
GuitarManiac09
08-23-2007, 09:29 AM
You can read Guitar Pro 3 Files if you have any guitar pro higher, so 5.2 should definitely work... I don't know what to tell you other than if it doesn't work try saving it to your computer and click "run with" and select guitar pro from the list. It's a bit of a tedious process, but if you REALLY want to see the tabs and it doesn't work in the first place, that's the way to go.

I understand that. Yet I think TuxGuitar is pretty powerful compared to these others. I tend to dislike programs that have the registration countdown annoyances. Also, TuxGuitar does work is being updated/improved, and it's free. It works on Windows XP and some other distributions. It needed some tweaking, but it worked out just fine. I learned about it, because I couldn't play guitarpro or other types of files in Linux so easily.
However, since I've used TuxGuitar, I like it more than the other ones. The other ones seem to clumsy. And I don't like the midi tones they use for the instruments.

If you're looking at some of these notation programs for guitar (or other instruments) definitely check out an application called "Progression" which has real samples for Electric and Acoustic Guitar (along with a host of other instruments including a full Drum Set).....there's also a modelling VST that comes with it. Working with the guys who made it, I've made some scores with Progression and it is possible to have certain guitar sounds pass for the real thing (using bends, slides, etc).....highly debatable, I know, but technology is doing pretty ridiculous things these days. Check out some demo's if you're interested..... http://progression.notionmusic.com will show a bunch.

Also has the playback feature, import and export feature, but a much better variety of imports and exports (significantly, Imports- Powertab, MIDI; Exports- Guitar Pro 4, MIDI).
So GP can import Powertab files? Is that what this means?
I recently bought GP and I'm happy cos it's a great program and lately I've just been finding GP tabs and printing them out and customizing lead guitar parts (for songs with 2 guitars) but some of the newer songs don't have GP files only powertab, since I read this I was wondering if I could import powertab files into GP...

i havent used Gp b4 but i reckon Pt ****in rocks, i mean it's free takes up no space, and pretty easy to use. and if one of the main difs is the drums, then why do u need to be able to read something to play drums? i've been playing drums for 4 yrs now and i hav neva had a lesson and dont know how to read music. I learn by ear, so it's no probs for me that drums are hard on power-tab

i use both on a regular basis, for creating stuff i like powertab alot better, as well for quick play back and less memory usage... im a tab freak so i have both, once i finish a tab i can export it to GP and add drums xD thats my main usage for it sometimes it gets bitchy when creating -like the removal of empty measures/staffs... (gp does)- so yeah... i love both of them but for tabbing stuff i use PT most of the time... then for drumming or random tabs i find i use whichever -i also use tabit but thats just for looking at tabs i have no idea how to use the damn thing-

I highly prefer Guitar Pro. You can have the insturments seperated into mutliple tabs much easier, along with it sounding much more realisitic. I advise you get Guitar Pro although powertab is good if you're low on money. It also depends on how you learn, I learn by hearing and seeing, some can learn by looking at a piece of paper and know it. I can't. So yeah, I hihgly advise you buy GP though.

If you go on www.jimmyr.com/mp3.php and select megaupload/rapidshare on the drop down menu you can download the full cerison of gp5.2 for free. you need a prgram like winzip or 7 zip to extract the .rar file though

There is actually another good thing about Power Tab, you can "double dot" notes. As far as I know, you can't do it on Guitar Pro.

Coming from someone who is familiar with both programs, I don't understand why anyone would choose PT over GP other than the fact that PT is free. But I'm also pretty sure over 70% of GP users got GP for free. Then again, I'm only the millionth person saying this. :D

I have a question. I use guitar pro, partly due to the fact that it can play power tabs as well...and to the above post, I guess I'm one of the 30%....
It seems to me though, that guitar pro seems to have trouble converting some power tabs into guitar pros. While most of them work fine, several shawn lane tabs and a few other artists tabs are becoming entirely eighth notes at 120bpm in guitar pro, with WAY to many eighth notes per measure....i think around 17 each. I don't have Powertab so I can't see them how they were made, but is this an issue with guitar pro/my computer (Imac), or have I just found a lot of really bad tabs for really awesome songs lately?
ruker
01-27-2008, 11:40 PM
^ I had the same problem until I found out it wasn't my problem. Some people (seems like a lot actually) don't know how to count or don't understand what a time signature does. It's just because they are bad tabs, nothing you can do but correct them or find another tab. Remember, PT users don't have the luxury us GP users do where we don't have to make our own bars, it's automatic. :D
TheShred201
01-28-2008, 12:08 AM
Ok. I didn't know they had to separate bars by themselves. I suppose I'll look into fixing the 16-18 or so shawn lane tabs I have.

I'm really disappointed in Guitar Pro.
After using Powertab a while, I decided to finally go buy the "better" one.
It's alright, it sounds better, but as for trying to just get a tab... Just plain annoying.
For example, Fade to Black - Metallica, I was going to print the tabs for that song.
Nevermind that.
They have 7 or so guitars, and I'm not printing each one seperately, or going to take the time each time I want to print the song to spend half an hour rearranging it into one guitar.
That was just that tab I know, but it happens with so far 80 or 90 percent of the tabs I've encountered.
People can't bother to just keep it as one guitar when there is only one.
So to anyone thinking about Guitar Pro, I wouldn't recommend it unless your transcribing the tabs yourself. It's not worth it to try and print out song tabs :|.
However, I also don't want to forget saying I loved how easily you can choose which section to print, since the tabs are put in a page arrangement to start.
Powertab... No.
The only Guitar Pro tabber I currently have respect for is the one who did "Bohemian Rhapsody", by Queen.
Even though they added a ton of instruments, they had another section "Piano - Print", which was for printing obviously, and not having to bother with half every other measure being on the other instrument (Which is usually the same, but by a different artist, so they make it a different section... -_-)

^ That's a recording tool rather than tablature.
Like if you wanted to make a CD of your music you would use that to record into your computer rather than type something out in Guitar Pro. I also don't think it would show you what you played in regards to musical notation or tablature.
It's a cheaper version of their Pod but with recording software.

Hmm, well I have powertab and the guitar pro demo. I find powertab to be way easier and simpler to use, while guitar pro is slow to bring up the various windows (like instruments, ect). I wish the demo let you do more since it's only good for a limited time anyway.
The best part of guitar pro is the drums imo and that it plays the notes while you tab them, besides that, I like powertab better.

Nah its not the tab, say you have some fast chop you want 2 learn i.e some Malmsteen or something and you want 2 practice it at a slower tempo you have to go through a lot of crap 2 do it as i said before, you have 2 write it into the tab
1. Change the TEMPO OF THE SONG
2. PUT IN REPEAT SYMBOL
now this wasn't my idea this has been suggested by the company when you try to go to the dead link for "looping"

It's probably an issue with formatting. To check out what GP expects just start with any GP tab and hit Export to Ascii. Check out the format and try to put your ascii file in that format.

Oh, and how do you insert a bar? Or insert one note into a bar, without having to delete the whole bar and do it all again?

To insert a bar press Ctrl+Ins. This will insert a bar before the one that is selected (where your mouse is). You could also Right click and select Add a bar.
To insert a note in a bar press Insert. This will insert a note before the selected one.

For ritardando press F10 and select Tempo and modify to the desired value and the length of the decrease interval.

honestly, Power tabs is good for guitar/bass lines. It runs smoother, less errors and quite reliable.
for full scores like Orchestras, Ensembles and Full songs i'll use Guitar Pro to work out some parts i can't figure out on staff.
But honestly, The ear and staff paper should be your primary source, and Guitar Pro and Power Tabs be your 2nd.

It means that your fonts didn't get installed correctly with GP. Here's the font file, I think you just stick in the fonts folder in the guitar pro folder in program files.

Personally, I think Guitar Pro is far better than Guitar Pro. It just feels more usable and is. Powertab is cool program though as well and is great for being free. I think this a great example of where you actually get what you pay for with the base of a solid program.

Hi, I've been using GP for quite a while now. Because I find that way better than powertab.
So I decided I should import a powertab file so I could play it on GP. (I suppose I'm too lazy to just copy/write from one thing to another)
Anyhow, it seems like there is a problem (which haven't been present when I've done this with other files)
GP can't import it, and I only get an error message in french, out of all languages, saying "Violation d'accès à l'adresse 005DA188 dans le module 'GP5.exe'. Ecriture de l'adresse 00000004"
So due to my limited french skills, I've got no idea what that means.
And even when I've translated the things there, I still don't know what I should do.

I love Power Tab...it takes a while to learn. I imagine GP does too. I just don't have GP because I don't want to spend the money and I don't care enough to download it and get a registration code and everything.
Plus that's WRONG! :)

i prefer GP, since it is easier to learn songs. you can switch while playing the song, and also look at the bass and guitar lines at the same time. so you can change the layout to see all instruments at same time or just one. plus its more user friendly in my opinion and sounds more real. it also often has voice and drums in it which is pretty rare in PT. i started of with PT and was happy with it until i got GP

I have both ... recent bought GP5.2 online. I like it because it seems to be supported more - but I wasn't really all that impressed with the RSA sounds, but they were decent. For me, just downloading a song and printing out a PDF to learn from, PT for free is a good price - but i have GP5.2 now, and many songs are available for it the are not for PT.
Both are great programs (very similar to me) -- I just hope GP5 files keep getting posted by accomplished tabbers and that nothing gets shut down like PT did.

Powertab Software is free...and easy to obtain without having to deal with the headaches that Gnutella-Based Peer-to-Peer networks & programs CAN, HAVE, & (eventually) WILL cause to a lot of people...those programs are so ridden with Viruses and shit...but if you do get ahold of Guitar Pro...if you are trying to get an entire band or group of musicians to learn a song or piece...then I'd say Guitar Pro is a lot better, but for just the guitar player, I Prefer Power Tabs...for MAKING Tabs, I (Again) have to give it to Power Tabs, because As I kindof stated before, Guitar Pro requires for all of the parts of the band to write the appropriate tablature to make a complete Guitar Pro Tab...but if you're trying to get a whole band to learn a song & you can find the appropriate song's GP Tab...Then GP's the way to go...but for almost ANYTHING ELSE...I'd Recommend Power Tabs...

How does one add a note into a measure that is in between two other measures in Power Tab?
Andrewbiles

^ You could probably use the spacebar to separate them out (if I've understood you correctly) and then type the notes in.

I just use PowerTab, it's good enough for me and I don't have to worry about paying/torrenting anything.

I use guitar pro, its good, if you download the right copy you can get the bass and drums and however many guitars there are. But you might be able to do that on power tab, i've never used it:(

^ Click the 'attach staff' button to add the extra lines, then at the start of the second instrument click the 'gtr in' button and tick the box. You'll have to make a second instrument first in the guitar icon button though.
Please use this thread (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?p=16844063) if you need help rather than in here

i think GP is way better!
Ye ok the RSE souns fake, but its way better than wot PT sounds like!
Ive used GP to write songs aswell,, and found it very useful tbh.
Ive also used guitar pro files with the guitar channel muted to jam with, or if I'm recording a cover the drum track can be useful aswell.

Power Tab, by far. It runs far more smoothly and actually puts all the tracks on the same page. I despise that about guitar pro. It makes printing a bitch.
Also it's free.

As does Guitar pro if you knew how to do it.
Bottom line is Power Tab is great for being free, but it contains quite a few glitches and such. There is a reason Guitar Pro is not free, because it is way better. I've seen both worlds in depth, and its the truth.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but in Guitar Pro, is it possible to have bass clef? So I could use it for piano also?
Or is there a program which does both guitar and piano? I mainly want it for guitar, but I want to learn piano more...

If you switch the tuning to a bass tuning it'll use a bass clef.

So you can't have both at the same time like for piano?
I think I'll still get it though because powertab just isn't cutting it for me...

I 'm not very computer savvy and am having problems with power tab. I'm sure it is my fault. I went through the download from your link and it says it was successful but I still can't view tabs. What am I missing?
^You should install power tab on your pc and download power tabs, then double click on it.

For guitar, bass and drum. Guitar Pro is way better. For the rest is doesn`t matter that much if you compare the sounds. RSE is awesome, though the high notes are sometimes really awful. Then you just got to change Overdriven/Distortion Guitar #01 into #02. And further I don`t know why Powertab is better. GP is more fluent, especially in ease of use, once you used a few times...

first i tried Power Tab to save my song ideas, melodies etc.
but when i tabbed my first song and wanted to have some
drum beat, power tab wasn't enough for me. i watched a
metallica tab ("nothing else matters") where the tabber has
realized the drums with steel drums, but that sounded awful.
so i searched the web until i found a full version of Guitar Pro
(in this time it was version 4.10) on a french server. retraining
wasn't very hard and with it i could tab an according drum beat.
now it is version 5.2 and although i've become a linux user,
which means that i use TuxGuitar, i would recommend everyone
who needs to tab bass and drums that should sound better than
midi (maybe for a background arrangement in own songs) to
try it. although there are some good drum computer which sound
better, Guitar Pro is more flexible and it also helps to learn notes.
to put it all in a nutshell: "Guitar Pro all over the world ;) "

I've been on a Mac for a long time so PowerTab was never an option for me.
I only got Guitar Pro a few months ago. Which I must say, after years of not using anything but my web browser to learn songs, this is a godsend. I have buddies who use TabIt which I think might be simalar to PowerTab, but comparatively GuitarPro sounds much better.

I have just acquired Guitar Pro, and I have one issue with it so far.
How do I place irregular groupings in the songs?
For instance, playing 4 8th notes over the space of 3. I have songs written on power tab which, at the moment, don't translate onto GP5 with the timings I want, because of this reason.
