ok as you guys have probably noticed, a lot of advertising threads for drugs, cell phones, porn etc etc get posted in this forum on a regular basis. however not all of them are completely obvious. there has been a few threads lately where the advertiser has tried to seem like a new user by posting something like:
Hello all,Let's talk about music. What genre of music you love to listen?I love to listen Electronic music. And you? :)
with a link in either the commas and periods, or in the smiley used, to whatever site they happen to be advertising.

if any of you see a thread that looks a little strange like the quote above (usually with the http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/images/icons/icon1.gif icon for some unknown reason) please run over the text with your cursor to see if there are any hidden links, and if you find any don't click them, just report the thread and post *reported*.

i'm also going to take this opportunity to make sure you guys are clear on the rules when it comes to spam/advertising threads and reporting them:

- when you see a thread which is obviously spam or advertising, do not post in it for any reason unless you are reporting it, and include *reported* in your post. bumping these kinds of threads is not appreciated and there's a good chance you'll receive a warning for it, even if you're telling the person not to spam, etc.
- if the thread has already been reported by someone, just ignore it. it's not ok to spam the thread up even more, and each thread does not need to be reported more than once. once again, warnings will be given out to anyone who contributes to a spam thread.

thanks to anyone who actually reads this :)
i'm going to leave this thread open for any questions you might have on this topic, but any spam will receive a warning so don't be silly, k? :p:

You're welcome lol.
I have a question, though. Would it be bad if we reported them and helped them by answering their question and including *reported* in the post. For instance:
"Hey guys, what is the best bass"
"*reported*
Gibson Thunderbird"

Would it be bad if we did that, cause I think I did that exact same post for the same question yesterday. I didn't think about it until I read this. Peace truckers.

^ This thread is more about advertising than misplaced threads. If you see a thread that involves advertising, just report it and don't post in it again.

But if you see a misplaced thread (ie "What's a Good Guitar For...?"), I don't see why you can't give your input after you report the thread. The only probelm I see with doing that is: by giving your opinion, other people might want to give some of their own advice, which leads to the thread being bumped multiple times for no great reason.

Buuuuttt... What do I know, right? Kaos would be able to give you the best answer to your question.

^Nice avatar.
Anyway, I was hoping for her to answer the question, since it's her rule, but thanx anyways, truckers.

What is the point of posting a link where no one can find it? (I.E a smily or a comma). It seems pretty pointless to me.

Oh, and this thread is making me really parinod, every thread has look suspicious to me now. :)

i pretty much agree, cept that most threads that are put in here don't really need to be reported - we won't have much trouble finding them when we check the forum so it's not a big deal. just report advertising or anything particularly stupid and we'll get to that stuff first and go through the rest at our own pace.
i don't mind if people add their opinions to threads put in the wrong forum, i'll generally just move the thread to where it's meant to be if that's the case, rather than closing it. but sonixon might have a differing opinion ;)

it does seem to defeat the point of advertising, but i for one usually find the links and i guess some people might be curious enough to click them, but yeah i dunno lol.
don't be paranoid, the hidden links won't hurt ya :p:

is it proper to write "Don't Post" so the newbies in this forum know? Or just reported and that's it?

Was the thread i posted in a spam thread? If so, how do i tell so i don't do it again? Thanks again and sorry i am a noob! Also if there is anything else i need to know can you direct me to where i can get the info? I really like this place and would like to not accidently get the boot....lol. I was also wondering about the "anything particularly stupid" comment. I mean, if that's someones opinion shouldn't it be accepted as such regardless of said opinion of it being stupid? This whole thing has me all paranoid now because any comment can be considered stupid by someone and be reported then, how is that just?

whoa dude settle down with the multiple posts and such (there is an edit button under your posts if you want to add/remove anything lol, double posting is bad). you got a warning for posting "Taco's are my drug of choice. Clams are nice too......." in the drug thread, because that thread is for serious discussion and for people to get advice, not for stupid jokes. the thread has been really successful and i don't want it turning to crap by letting people spam it up with anything that isn't a serious question or attempt at giving someone advice.

It's okay to let somone know it's not okay to post something by your response to the persons question above your last response which makes me wonder why i wasn't given that option?
i'm sorry but what?

by that i mean if someone posts a thread saying something like "LOLOLOL I LIKE CHEESE!" or "HAHAHAAHA UG SUCKS" you should report it by using the Report Bad Post button so a moderator can close/delete it quickly before it turns into a spamfest. you know... just the completely stupid/useless stuff that is just meant to be annoying and not prompt a discussion.

just be careful and think before you post. if you don't have anything constructive to say, don't say anything. if you're not sure whether or not to report something, just leave it alone, it's no big deal.
if you're not sure whether or not you're allowed to make a thread about something, or which forum you should post something in, just ask here in the New Members Forum beforehand.

there was a comment you made about posting things which aredeamed stupid, which was what i was asking about how that's fair basicaly, shouldn't we be aloud to state our opinions if they aren't hurting anyone? The other one was basicaly asking why since the one person(instrumetal) asked you if you could just let someone know it's wrong before reporting them to which you said sure, why noone extended that courtesy to me basicaly instead of reporting me for making a silly remark? It just seems silly to me that people can get the boot from something like this which is basicaly entertainment for entertaining themselves at the expense of noone but, themselves. Also in response to your last comment about settling down, no worries i am calm i just had alot of questions to ask because my being reported didn't really make sense to me and i was trying to understand how that occured. I do now understand that i should have just not posted in there so that's fine, i intend to watch for that type of thread again next time.

Last thing, wouldn't a thread advocating drug use be considered not only tactless but,"stupid" as well as more offensive than me talking about food at random? Like i said i get that my subject matter was unrelated but, by me typing that i was expressing my opinion of that thread being silly while maintaing civil toungue, at least i thought so. Don't get me wrong, i won't do it again or anything i just think it's unjust that my comment is unworthy when the thread is talking about drug use which is what you said is not cool, advertising drugs/use and that's what that thread was doing. The thread was for "serious advice"? It was about your drug of choice and where people can find said drugs, that doesn't seem that serious to me and it's not even music related, by that shouldn't the thread be spam or banned? Thanks!( i swear no more questions after these are taken care of!)

you've completely missed the point about several things.

Instrumetal was asking whether or not he should add something like "Don't post after me" when he reports a spam/advertising thread and posts "*reported*", as it is against the rules to post in reported threads and he wanted to inform people that they shouldn't post or they would get a warning. this has absolutely nothing to with your situation.

you weren't reported by anyone. you don't get informed when you are reported, it's a system to let moderators know about spam posts, etc. i saw your post of my own accord and chose to give you a warning for it.

the drug thread is located in the pit, which is a forum for discussion of topics other than guitar/music. it is not spam. it is not advertising anything. it is a legitimate discussion. no i do not think it is stupid to discuss drugs - people are going to do drugs whether society likes it or not, and i think it is much better for people to be educated about such things so they can at least make informed choices. if you think that thread is just about "your drug of choice and where to find it" you clearly have not read the entire thread. i have.

as to what is deemed stupid or not, that is completely up to the moderators. this isn't a democracy, there is no free speech. if we don't like what you say, we have the right to get rid of it, warn you or ban you. it may not be 'fair' but the forum would not exist today if we let every idiot spout their crap wherever they like, it just doesn't work that way.

No i didn't miss a thing, i was trying to explain myself from before because you asked me what i meant (in refferance to instrumetal). Thanks.

i still would like to know where the button is you were reffering to previously if that's okay? i can't find it.

The report button? Right beneath a person's post...

Here it is on the UG black skin:

btw stop being such a child with the "i may get reported for the joke again even though it is an opinion and should be accepted as such in my opinion" crap. i can read that, and your deleted posts, ya know. grow up.
