as far as I know, what you've heard is true. I played my friend's ovation the other day for probably an hour or so... neck was great... bowl shape was awkward. I imagine it's something you could get used to though. and I've heard from others that ovations are really only worth getting if you plan on playing it a lot while plugged in... cause they don't have the best unplugged sound.

Pretty much true. As a general rule, they also suck unplugged. I would only buy one if you will be playing plugged in more often then not, and have more than about $500 to spend on one. The ones below $500 are pretty crappy in my opinion.

People seem to love ovations or hate them. Ovations don't usually sound very good unplugged. They do much better at high volume than a regular electric acoustic acoustic. Some people love the body and they way it feels smaller, other people think that the guitar always feels like it's running way from them.

my friend owns a really nice one and id have to say the loudness and tone unplugged is sub par. plugg it in and it sounds really nice but nothing amazingly amazing. and yes the bowl shape is a pain in the ass if your sitting down. you cannot really play it with out a strap.
they do look cool but id advise you look around a lot more

X2.
I hate ovations.
played an ovation koa, compared it to my takamine which is all koa, [EF407].
sounded trebly as hell. the koa warmed it a bit but it was still trebly. and the fretwork was bad compared to my tak. only worth the buy if you plan on playing plugged. when unplugged they suck. major ass.

I have played 4 or 5 ovations in the last few years (did not purchase any), and I hated them all. They all sounded like crap and they also are uncomfortable to play with. Plus they look ****ty. There is no reason to buy an ovation guitar.

I'm one of those one's that hate them. Not only are the awkward, and the less would seems like a threat for sound quality approving, but the twangy, worship music kind of sound, is great for the genre, but that's not me at all. It's really you that's got to pick out the sound, and I can make too much suggestions 'cause I don't know what you're going for.

To add a con when you play it standing they oval body shape kinda bounce around which is very annoying. To add a pro they sound great and play great for an acoustic.

My buddy's dad has an Ovation and it's simply horrible. The neck feels awful, the sound is awful, the shape is a PITA... All the same complaints others have made, really. I'd never consider one, I've never seen one worth buying.

I think they look pretty nice but the backs are made out of plastic it seemed like and the headstock look cheap too. ($400-600 models i was playing at my guitar store)

I have played one at a local guitar store and i was impressed. The unplugged sound is not as loud as a full body because they are thinline guitars. If you find the full bowl Ovations they will have the full sound you may want. The necks are very good and plugged in the sound is great. And i was playing a $600 version, i am planning on getting one soon and i would recommend it to anyone.

Well I will be the only one to praise an Ovation here. I think the ballader ovations are horrible sounding but all the other ones without the soundhole in the middle are good. The sound I get out of my acoustic is loud. Of course not as loud as a martin or taylor but they are not as bad as you think. go out and play them and you shall see. The con of them though is playing in classical with an ovation is about as easy as painting a barnyard with babies. The bowl does take time to get used to but once you do, its natural. And the neck is by far the best feature.
