View Full Version : Adding more features to Quick Reply.

Well, alot of people already know that the Quick reply has alot less features than the Advanced Reply. I guess that's why it's called quick. Well anywho, I had an idea, and some may agree and some may not. That's fine, all I ask is that you think about this.

This is what the Quick Reply looks like now:

This is what the advanced reply looks like:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/AthenasGhost/ugforum2.jpg

Well, my idea was to sort of blend those two ideas together into the Quick Reply to make it fantascular.

Something sort of like this:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b398/AthenasGhost/ugforum3.jpg

Yes, I got a little carried away with photoshop. But I hope you get the idea.

Sorry if this has been suggested before. But yeah. The emoticon box would have a drop down with a list of some of the popular smilies. Etc, etc.

Thanks for listening!

what the hell is the point, you type words, hit tab and then hit enter, who needs to think about ****?

It could focus more on the slower users. Instead of having to click Advanced to see what smilies there are, or if they need to do something else, like change the font, they dont have to load a whole new page. Just click a drop down box.

Well, then it would pretty much be back the way it used to be. I'm not turning down your suggestion. It's simpler that way. But I'd love to keep the emoticons there, that way you can simply see what emoticons there are without clicking Advanced. Also the placement icons for your text should be there. The other stuff isn't so big. But i'm just saying, having the options of Advanced in the Quick spot. It could take getting used to, but it would be worth it. They are all just oppinions, so yeah. Hehe, just the way i'm looking at it is with almost all the buttons on Advanced, just for more options.

^ Maybe I'm biased because I never use the buttons anyway.

I especially think the Indent and List buttons should be taken off, simply because they aren't used TOO often (at least not often enough to deserve a Quick Reply spot). I see what you mean about wanting the smilies drop down there, and I sort of agree with you. I just don't like the idea of having the smilies drop down menu along with Font, Colour, and Size. Actually, here:

Its a "quick" reply for a reason... although, I wouldn't mind this...

I personally don't see how anything besides just "post quick reply" does anything besides defeat the purpose of said quick reply.

^ thats kinda what i think. i know the codes for the stuff i usually use and its quicker to just type it. using advanced is more for longer or more complicated stuff. quick reply is just supposed to be quick. one or two new things might be ok, but i really dont think it needs a bunch of drop down panels and whatnot. seems like a waste to me.

I'm not sure about this idea, mainly because a quick reply is basically a reply that you can give quickly. Adding everything to the quick reply gives no purpose for an advanced reply. Just add like one or two more features. Adding font, size, colors, and emoticons defeats the entire purpose of quick.

If you scroll just past the text box, you can open the smilies pop-up window anyway, which would make the smilies panel pointless. I wouldn't mind the IMG icon added to the quick reply, though... I use that every now and then.

It is quick reply, but I dont think this would make it any slower , just more convenient.

I think only a few more features would need to be added. The slow users most likely learn all of the codes necessary to do all the functions that they want to do. It'd be a waste to put all of those on there.

IndieMetalhead
11-14-2006, 02:08 PM
Just put font, size and colour on there. no need for any of the rest (thats all the quick replies for, a hastily written reply that doesn't need bells and whistles. adding smileys and every button in the advanced view just clutters things up

Meh, I actually got rid of all that jazz on the quick reply box until I realised it disappeared from the Advanced Reply too.

1. Is it really that hard to type out the tags?
2. Isn't it a standard vB thing anyway?

wannabe jesus
11-14-2006, 03:11 PM
I'd be in favour of this, I know all of the tags by heart but I see some posts that are hard to understand because they aren't familiar with it. I think the most useful to people would be the URL one because some people don't know how to use the [url=] code.

But the favourite one for personal use would definetely be the attatch image.

a couple of extra features (the ones most often used) would be alright, but not all of them or it completely defeats the purpose and you might as well just have the advanced reply.

i personally type out the codes for things like bold, italic and underline, and the basic smilies with codes i remember like :) :p:  :wtf: etc, so if it were up to me it would be more like this:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e357/divid3d/quickreplycopy.jpg

simply because it would make it quicker for me when i'm using a fair bit of text decoration or a smiley i dont use often and don't know the code for. but it's all personal preference, everyone uses different features more often than others. i usually only use advanced reply when im quoting someone and it goes there automatically, or if i want to preview my post before submitting, so quick reply is pretty much fine as it is.

so basically, small changes = ok, not gonna bother me and will possibly help. big changes = defeating the purpose of a quick reply box.

AthenasGhost
11-14-2006, 06:58 PM
Good to see some of you are getting the idea, that's cool. But I know most of you are saying that it's Quick, because it doesn't have all those options.

But personally, correct me if im wrong, but isn't it quick because it's right under all the posts and you don't have to click the "post reply" button and load a whole new page? It's just right there, no matter how many buttons you put there, people will know that they don't have to click them if they don't need to, but none the less, it will still be "quick"

EDIT:
has anyone noticed that the "quote message in reply?" box can't be checked?

I just noticed that. Humph wierd.

^someone explained how to check it once. i don't remember how but it is possible, i think.

i like the idea. i would like to see only a couple of more features. maybe the smilies, font size, font type and that's it.

i think people should be allowed to put what they want in their quick reply box if this idea goes into affect. kind of like choosing whether each page shows 40 posts or 20, or choosing whether to show your signature or not. you can make it that one would be allowed to go into the options menu and click what things they want. (smilies, font, img tags, etc.)
that's just an idea since people are agreeing and disagreeing what to put in and what not to put in.

yeah i was just thinking that if that was possible it would be perfect. like by default it'd have the basics, but you could personalise it a bit by adding/removing options. that'd seriously rock, but it probably requires too much effort to implement considering it isn't really necessary.

It quotes a message in your reply, without you having to press the quote button which takes you to advanced reply. So you can quote a specific post, and still type in the quick reply box.

Click the thingy in the red square...

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c166/Johnljones7443/qr1.jpg

And voila, it becomes clickable...

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c166/Johnljones7443/qr2.jpg

Which quotes whichever post you clicked the button under without taking you to advanced reply.
