how can you say that dino jr is basicly j mascis? lou barlow was a really big part of it too, and that other guy as well, but not as much as j and lou.

a band is never just a guy.

Dino Jr. was definitely not "just J Mascis", that's a moronic statement. It may have gotten that way during the waning of band, after J was the only original member, but definitely not the first three albums. He may be the first thing you think of when you think of Dinosaur Jr. but Lou shared a fair ammount of the songwriting duties and he and Murph had their own impact on the band's sound.

One of my favorite bands ever. I have all their albums and am looking forward to hearing the new one.

Saw them live about 4 months ago. Bloody amazing. You're Living all over me is one of the best albums of the 80s, and definately one of the crown jewels of the grunge/alternative era.

j: "people think that i am lazy because i talk so slow"

j: "i don't know, i guess cause i'm lazy"

My girlfriend gave me a burned Dinosaur Jr. CD to listen to and I didn't. And then when she saw me tonight she mentioned what a good band they were and I had to pretend I agreed but I really had no clue and I felt bad for lying to her -- even though it was a lie of omission because all I did was smile and nod I still felt bad.

Should I actually listen to it?

In case anyone's interested, Dino Jr has some BRAND NEW EPIC SONGS on their myspace. http://www.myspace.com/dinosaurjr
Almost ready is pretty good, but Been There All The Time is excellent songwriting and has literally some of the best guitar work I've heard. Seriously, J's playing was great in the 80's but he's gotten a whole lot smoother and more melodic. I kinda miss the noise freakouts, but it's pretty fantastic anyway.

I dunno about the new songs on myspace. Not horrible, but not amazing. J is soloing his brains out though, haha. On the other hand, "Back to Your Heart", a song by Lou, is sounding pretty good. It's much more interesting. Hoping for the best though, reunited Dino has so much potential.

I've been into them for a while now. YLAOM definitely has the best feel, but Where You Been seems to have better songs on it for me.

I saw them the year before last in Spain, at FiB. Thoroughly enjoyable. Their version of 'Just Like Heaven' was phenomenal live, so much that it was actually better than the Cure's performance of it the night before, and on record I'd say the Cure version is better.

I enjoy the guitar-wankery and their general loudness; possibly one of the loudest bands I've ever seen live. Ear piercing!

They do however look a bit past it, and certainly aren't as good as they were in their heydey (from what I understand; I wasn't actually alive then). Not sure about the new album that's coming, but we shall see.

I'm also seeing them again this summer, in Spain, again. Should be top.

:haha

That's a great interview.

Let's talk about the new Dinosaur Jr. album. Have you heard it Kevin?

KEVIN SHIELDS: Yeah, it sounds good. Actually I think it's a lot warmer than the one before [Green Mind]. I was trying to explain this to J earlier. The top end is real open and vicious. All the lead bits are really agressive. but it's warm at the same time--without being over-trebly either.

I thought the leads were more lyrical and sustained than what you've done in the past, J. Were you going for a different style or sound this time?

J. MASCIS: [long pause]No.

The entire interview basically summed up in the first question.

But yeah. I'm actually a brand new Dinosaur Jr. fan. Heard all of You're Living All Over Me two days ago and haven't stopped since.

So when I saw them this summer, I could not stop laughing at the things Lou would do with his legs and feet while he was doing his solo show. I felt pretty bad about it, but he kept doing this bizarre, feminine writing dance whilst he sat on a wooden chair.

I also saw my school librarian at the show. Wierd!

No wooden chairs in site.

He does do this weird feet and legs thing which is probably what you're talking about.
Stands on one leg and kinda jerks the other leg out randomly.

I dunno, he does it on the DVD, and he did it when I saw them live...

Off the top of my head he sings on:

Dinosaur
Mountain Man

Cats In A Bowl (this is one of the few I'm not sure who sings, I think Lou does the lead, but the very last few lines are definitely J)
Gargoyle

You're Living...

A lot of people thought Dinosaur Jr would get big in the early 90s after Nirvana opened the floodgates for all the "grunge" bands, but it never panned out, even though 1993's Where you been was a great record with 3 radio-worthy songs. Could be because J Mascis has a weirdness to his delivery that doesnt bode well with mainstream america. (yes, im getting most of this from the liner notes of ear-bleeding country)
BTW, got beyond and where you been for christmas; can't get enough of beyond. I love when Barlow writes songs, it sounds just like indie Neil Young.

giving this thread a much needed bump

i just got into dinosaur jr a few months ago. I figured I might as well give them a try since i heard great things about them for the past few years.

Bug is now one of my favorite albums, also love Where You Been and Beyond. Like I said in the above post(which is almost a month old) I might be seeing them next month. I really hope I can go see them.

Anyway, I read on the bands myspace yesterday that they have titled the new album Farm. It will be released on June 23.

Bug is probably my favorite album they did, but Green Mind and Where You Been are still great albums. Where You Been is actually the album that got me into Dinosaur Jr. I also loved Beyond and I hope Farm will sound something like that.

I respectfully disagree. I'm a big fan of Dinosaur Jr., but the Cure's version will always be better.

Yeah. It is great.

The solo in Don't Wanna Go There is absolutely epic, it's like 5 minutes long.

Someone really needs to tab the solo to Ocean in the Way. Sounds so awesome.

after having given farm two full listenings i must say my first impression is really good. if you like beyond, you'll most likely like farm as well. i think i'll have to give some more time for it to really sink in, but definitely so far so good.

Farm is out? I didn't think it came out till tomorrow. I remember reading everywhere and hearing Lou say live it comes out on the 23rd?. Oh well, I need to scrape together some moolah to buy it fast.

And I doubt that was J skating in the Over It video, but one can dream. That was a pretty cool board he was riding(or the stunt double).
