Newb question about FX loop

For years and years I have not used it nor have I wanted to. But as of late I have been reading alot of people actually using it.

Now how would I use it? I though it had to go GUITAR-EFFECTS-AMP?

What are the advantages of the FX loop?

With FX loop, the effect is on. You don't control it like you would with a pedal. I don't really know much about it though. This doesn't belong in this forum though.
