I am hopefully seeing them at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston this erm, Feb?

I don't see what all the fuss is about with them. All the blogs have loved them up this year and ended up in most's top 10. Insound has sold a ton of copies. But why? It's all quite pretty and in parts dramatic, but top 10 of the year?

How did I miss this thread? Grizzly Bear is one of my favorite bands of '06

Yellow House is great and Horn of Plenty is almost as good

Live they are pretty good too...the songs feel very different from the record. Has anyone else caught them yet on this tour? I saw them and it seemed like a lot of people were there just because it was the place to be that night, not because they actually like them. I mean I drove 3 hours to get there, so that kinda bugged me but whatever...it was still a good show.

I still like Yellow House but god...

I saw them live and they were HORRIBLE

the singer had this annoying reverb on the entire show, they didnt go on till midnight, they just sorta dumbed down all their songs, at least the show let me discover The Dirty Projectors (whose set was mindblowing btw)

uhh_me?
03-01-2007, 11:00 PM
You thought they were horrible? I liked them live, I think they stripped the songs down, not "dumbed them down." They sort of felt like that is what the songs would have sounded like had they been on Horn of Plenty...

Oh and on the topic of the Dirty Projectors, I thought they were good...except I missed half the performance since i needed to move my car since i was parked illegally. Oops

lo fi nights
03-01-2007, 11:11 PM
^perhaps horrible was a bit much

but for a lack of a better word they sounded nu-metal. Yellow House is lively and organic and wierd. It sounded so logical and droning and masculine and predictable. Idk, I was very high and it was almost 1 in the morning.

funny story. i bought yellow house on friday and listened to it. i thought it was ok cruising chilling kinda music but kinda meh and i was about to say so in this thread when i found it this morning. then i thought twice and relistened to it and it is now strangely amazing. i actually woulda bought the loney, dear cd but they were sold out. well, i think it's funny.

i don't think you're disrespecting them by downloading the leak.. only if you download and don't buy the record..

also, i seem to remember that it was them who upload an AC track or something and got **** from websheriff or something like that, so it seems that they aren't really opposed to that

uhh_me?
03-03-2009, 11:25 AM
well, here are the things
1) i plan on buying the album. no question about it.
2) from what i understand, the leak that is out there sounds terrible. i want to hear the real final, polished version.
3) they didn't actually leak the AC song. that was a big misunderstanding. the song leaked somewhere else and they just ended up being on of the last places to continue hosting the song. this got them all sort of heat from the web sheriff for it.

i dunno, maybe i will download it a few weeks down the line when there is a good quality leak out there or once i preorder the album. we will see.

sponj
03-03-2009, 05:09 PM

sir, you are absolutely wrong. they sound spectacular live. i've seen them three times. so perhaps, you might think that i am biased, and you might be right, but they have been exceptional each time. the songs are simultaneously stripped down and more expansive.

Veckatimest is a lot more mature material from them. The songs are more fully developed but keep loose structures and asides found in Yellow House.

For those that downloaded the leak please do yourself a favor and buy the album. The LP sounds sooooo good.

Ready, Able off of Veckatimest is my favorite song as of recently. What I like about them is you can't really distinguish the different instruments from one another. That is to say, what you hear is one blended sonic end product, that creates an almost dreamlike experience. At least for me. =P

Love them. Veckatimest is one of my favorite records of the year.

I saw them live last monday. Great show, excellent sound. Their performance was pretty much flawless and much more energetic than on record. I Live With You was ****ing epic! One of the best shows i've seen recently.

Oh, and St Vincent (just Annie without her band) did a great job as the opening act, Marrow rocked hard as ever and at the end of her gig, Daniel Rossen joined her for a lovely version of The Party :)

currently listening to Veckatimest for the first time in months, does anyone else experience parts where the bass peaks and just makes a terrible flat ducky sound? it seems to be only a couple of tracks that do this, All We Ask and Cheerleader. and yes, i did check to make sure that the EQ on my computer and the stereo wasn't wonky.

is it a recording error? a mistake in the cd i have? a problem when i ripped it to my computer? something that is supposed to be there, but irks me?

I agree. My favorite is usually either the one I'm currently listening to or the one I've most recently listened to. It's hard because Veckatimest has more immediately accessible songs but Yellow House has a very distinct ambience to it that makes it hard to ignore. I don't believe one is better or more well crafted then another, it's just a matter of personal taste.
