Eddies sound is really all in the amp and the EQ'ing - it lists an SD1 there but that'll just be for solo boosting. Cranked Marshall with plenty of midrange , treble down a bit and volume, volume, volume!

he always had it cranked..

and it wasn't a marshall, he had his own peavey (5150)

^Well his Peavey's wasn't produced until far after Panama was released.

EVH sound (classic EVH, the Brown Sound):
Charvel Strat with a PAF pickup
Marshall Plexi, cranked, set all the knobs to 10 (which Eddie did)
Reverb and tape echo
MXR Phase 90 for solos (set the speed to 9 o clock)
MXR Flanger for some parts to.

I found googling eddies effects pedals on Panama on a web page I lost...
sorry I am unable to give credit.

*Original, Script-Logo MXR Phase 90
*MXR Flanger
*Six-Band Graphic Equalizer
*Maestro Echoplex
*Maestro Echoplex (Yep, he used two of them!)
*Univox EC-80 Echo

I also found this new pedal by EVH that sounds pretty darn
eddie van halen classicly...

*EVH Phase 90 MXR Eddie Van Halen Stomp Box

wrong
partially wrong
doesnt really matter
what the ****? wrongo

Those songs are his older tones, you want powertube distortion, and by that i mean EL34s (el84's don't really do the brownsound all that well imo)

To get the EVH tone without blowing up something - weather it's an attenuator, your neighbors roof, or your own eardrums, is pretty much impossible.

You can get close to it with pedals but i never really found any pedal to get close to the brown sound.

EVH did boost his amps though, it's no lie, he uses the boss sd-1 into his stock mashall plexiface, he probably used that setup for recording those songs

this guy gets close with his 68 spec plexiface

just slap on an sd-1 and turn the bass down and blamo you have pretty much the closest you can get to the EVH sound

Kids,

We don't necrobump threads that are five years old.

and....he never actually used a 5150 amp.

This recently discovered photo clearly shows that in addition to his Marshalls, his tone came from a reamp'ed Vox, his Variac, silver platform shoes and Schlitz Malt Liquor.

The vox is believed to be a backup.
