Conflicts in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Vietnam, Yugoslavia.

Africa's transformation from colonial to independent states rapidly accelerated.

Che Guevara traveling around the world and eventually being killed as he tried to bring about worldwide revolution.

Man walking on the moon.

JFK and Martin Luther King's assassination.

Many actions in the sixties were as a result of civil rights movements worldwide.

Edit - Not quite what you asked for, but important nonetheless.

Dont just focus on popular groups. I say focus on how Englan (mainly Liverpool) shaped popular music forever. Like focus on Merseybeat music and stuff.

Examples:
The Beatles
Herman's Hermits
Cream
Rolling Stones
Roy Wood & The Move

The 60's exspecually in the UK there was alot of expirmentation with the recordings and with the intruments they used for their records, just like "lkey" said, they starting using sitars and other native instruments they thought sounded good. Bands would move microphones in different places to see how the sound would differ, people would sing out of different kinds of speakers such as Lennon did in the song "Tomorrow Never Knows" to get the type of sound they truly wanted. (by the way Lennon sung out of Leslie speakers, which are basicly rotating speakers that you would normally play an organ out off) even though you said to disclude big bands.

To the threadstarter:

I'm sure Led Zep only REALLY got going in the very late 60's.

There was a lot of more mainstream and poppy acts through the 60's.

The Shadows, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and so on and so forth. They had a big impact on music I'd have to say.
